T1ρ/T2 mapping and histopathology of degenerative cartilage in advanced knee osteoarthritis

AIm To investigate whether normal thickness cartilage in osteoarthritic knees demonstrate depletion of proteoglycan or collagen content compared to healthy *** magnetic resonance(mR) images were acquired from5 subjects scheduled for total knee arthroplasty(TKA)(mean age 70 years) and 20 young healthy control subjects without knee pain(mean age 28.9 years). mR images of T1ρ mapping, T2 mapping, and fat suppressed proton-density weighted sequences were *** TKA each condyle was divided into 4 parts(distal medial, posterior medial, distal lateral, posterior lateral) for cartilage analysis. Twenty specimens(bone and cartilage blocks) were examined. For each joint,the degree and extent of cartilage destruction was determined using the Osteoarthritis Research Society International cartilage histopathology assessment *** magnetic resonance imaging(mRI) analysis, 2 readers performed cartilage segmentation for T1ρ/T2 values and cartilage thickness *** Eleven areas in mRI including normal or near normal cartilage thickness were selected. The corresponding histopathological sections demonstrated mild to moderate osteoarthritis(OA). There was no significant difference in cartilage thickness in mRI between control and advanced OA samples [medial distal condyle, P = 0.461;medial posterior condyle(mPC), P = 0.352; lateral distal condyle, P = 0.654; lateral posterior condyle, P = 0.550],suggesting arthritic specimens were morphologically similar to normal or early staged degenerative *** T2 and T1ρ values from the mPC were significantly higher among the patients with advanced OA(P= 0.043). For remaining condylar samples there was no statistical difference in T2 and T1ρ values between cases and controls but there was a trend towards higher values in advanced OA patients. Tree Population Dynamics of Three Altitudinal Vegetation Communities on mount Cameroon(1989-2004)

Changes in permanent sample plots in the lowland,submontane and montane forests on mount Cameroon(4,095 m above sea level),an active volcano,are described for 15 years from 1989 to *** the study period,the stocking level of trees with a diameter at breast height(DBH) ≥ 10 cm in the three forests were lower than in pan-tropical stands suggesting a significant impact of volcanic and human-related activities on the vegetation communities on the *** mortality rates in the submontane and montane forests were consistent with those reported for comparable altitudinal ranges in the Blue mountains of *** annual mortality rate was higher in the lowland forest than other lowland sites *** between recruitment and mortality rates was large suggesting that the three vegetation communities have not reached their *** seven-year difference in half-life of large trees(with a DBH ≥ 50 cm) in the submontane and montane forests suggests an altitudinal effect on turnover of larger trees that in turn contributes to the frequent small stature of high altitude *** was little evidence of an altitudinal effect on species turnover and growth *** finding supports generalizations about the zero effect of growth on the stature of high altitude *** forest dynamics is crucially important in the management of tropical montane environmentsand in this instance particularly so given the recent creation of the mount Cameroon National Park.

Social Choice meets Graph Drawing: How to Get Subexponential Time Algorithms for Ranking and Drawing Problems

We analyze a common feature of p-Kemeny AGGregation（p-KAGG） and p-One-Sided Crossing minimization（p-OSCm） to provide new insights and findings of interest to both the graph drawing community and the social choice community. We obtain parameterized subexponential-time algorithms for p-KAGG—a problem in social choice theory—and for p-OSCm—a problem in graph drawing. These algorithms run in time O＊（2O（√k log k））,where k is the parameter, and significantly improve the previous best algorithms with running times O.1.403k/and O.1.4656k/, respectively. We also study natural ＂above-guarantee＂ versions of these problems and show them to be fixed parameter tractable. In fact, we show that the above-guarantee versions of these problems are equivalent to a weighted variant of p-directed feedback arc set. Our results for the above-guarantee version of p-KAGG reveal an interesting contrast. We show that when the number of ＂votes＂ in the input to p-KAGG is odd the above guarantee version can still be solved in time O＊（2O（√k log k））, while if it is even then the problem cannot have a subexponential time algorithm unless the exponential time hypothesis fails（equivalently, unless FPT D m[1]）.

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSE AND PLANT PREFERENCE OF NEPHASPIS OCULATUS (COLEOPTERA: COCCINELLIDAE), PREYING ON BEmISIA ARGENTIFOLII (HOmOPTERA: ALEYRODIDAE) IN THE LABORATORY

The predatory behavior and functional response of all larval stages and adults of Nephaspis oculatus (Blatchley), a predacious coccinellid, on various egg densities of Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring, and prey preference of adult N. oculatus, were studied in the laboratory. Daily consumption of eggs of B. argentifolii by N. oculatus was evaluated at six different densities to obtain functional response curves for all active stages of the coccinellid. Bemisia argentifolii eggs were offered to N. oculatus on collard leaf disks in Petri dish arenas over a 24\|h period at 26 7  2℃ and a photoperiod of 14∶10 (L∶D) h. Linear relationships were observed between percentage prey consumed and prey density, with r 2 values between 0 82-0 99 for all stages except for the fourth instar that had a smaller r 2 value (0 64). Functional response curves of prey consumption by N. oculatus against density of B. argentifolii eggs fitted the type II model of Holling's disc equation for all larval stages and both the male and female adults. Adult females consumed more prey than adult males. The maximum theoretical number of prey consumed per day increased with larval development. The fourth instar was the most effective larval predator, followed by the third instar, the second instar, and finally, the first instar. Based on the functional response parameters, a maximum of 321, 312, 237, 229, 73, and 34 B. argentifolii eggs could be attacked by an adult female, a fourth instar, an adult male, a third instar, a second instar, and a first instar of N. oculatus, respectively. Nephaspis oculatus adults strongly preferred collard to tomato, soybean, eggplant or sweetpotato for oviposition and foraging. Nephaspis oculatus did not deposit any eggs on soybean and tomato.

Alpha-synuclein truncation and disease

Alpha-synuclein is the major component of Lewy bodies, insoluble protein aggregates, found in patients with Parkinson’s disease, diffuse Lewy body disease, and the Lewy body variant of Alzheimer’s disease. Alpha-synuclein has been found within Lewy bodies to contain many different modifications, including nitration, phosphorylation, ubiquitination, and truncation. C-terminally truncated forms of alpha-synuclein aggregate faster than the full-length protein in vitro, and are thus believed to play a role in Lewy body formation and disease progression. Pathological studies of post mortem brain tissue and the generation of transgenic mouse models further support a role of C-terminally truncated forms of alpha-synuclein in disease. Several enzymes, some of which function extracellularly, have been implicated in the production of these C-terminally truncated forms of alpha-synuclein. However, the enzymes responsible for alphasynuclein truncation in vivo have not yet been firmly established.

Experimentally unsupervised deconvolution for light-sheet microscopy with propagation-invariant beams

Deconvolution is a challenging inverse problem,particularly in techniques that employ complex engineered pointspread functions,such as microscopy with propagation-invariant ***,we present a deep-learning method for deconvolution that,in lieu of end-to-end training with ground truths,is trained using known physics of the imaging ***,we train a generative adversarial network with images generated with the known point-spread function of the system,and combine this with unpaired experimental data that preserve perceptual *** method rapidly and robustly deconvolves and super-resolves microscopy images,demonstrating a two-fold improvement in image contrast to conventional deconvolution *** contrast to common end-to-end networks that often require 1000-10,000s paired images,our method is experimentally unsupervised and can be trained solely on a few hundred regions of *** demonstrate its performance on light-sheet microscopy with propagation-invariant Airy beams in oocytes,preimplantation embryos and excised brain tissue,as well as illustrate its utility for Bessel-beam *** method aims to democratise learned methods for deconvolution,as it does not require data acquisition outwith the conventional imaging protocol.
