Background: The global decrease in wildlife populations, especially birds, is mainly due to land use change and increasing intensity of land use(Parmesan and Yohe 2003). However, impacts of management tools to mitigate biodiversity loss at regional and global scales are less apparent in forest regions that have a constant forest area,and which did not suffer from habitat degradation, and where forests are sustainably managed, such as in Central Europe or the northeastern USA. A biodiversity assessment for Germany suggested, for example, that bird populations were constant(Bundesamt für Naturschutz 2015).Results: This study shows that changes in the environment and in forest management over the past 45 years have had a significant, positive effect on the abundance of non-migratory forest bird species in Central Europe. Economy(timber prices and GDP), forest management(timber harvest and mixed forest area), and environmental factors(atmospheric CO_2 concentration and nitrogen deposition) were investigated together with changes in abundances of migratory and non-migratory forest birds using partial least squares path modeling. Climate change, resulting in longer seasons and milder winters, and forest management, promoting tree diversity, were significantly positively related to the abundance of non-migratory forest birds and explained 92% of the variation in their abundance in Europe. Regionally-migrating forest birds had stable populations with large variation, while birds migrating across continents declined in recent decades, suggesting significant, contrasting changes in bird populations in Europe. In northeastern North America we also found evidence that non-migratory forests have experienced long-term increases in abundance, and this increase was related to management. The history of the Black mountains in North Carolina and the southern Spruce-Fir ecosystem has been fraught with widespread forest decline since the mid 1960’s. Balsam Woolly Adelgid attacks and acidic deposition were two of the most recognized causes of decline. Uncertainty arose about the future of these forests, and projections were made regarding the endangerment or extinction of the endemic Fraser fir ([Pursh] Poiret). This study analyzed data sets from a permanent plot network in the Black mountains dating 1985, 2002, and 2012. Indications that the Fraser fir population is stabilizing from a “boom-bust” cycle of population growth and has entered the stem exclusion stage of forest stand development are evident. Fir live stem density increased more than 250% from 1985 to 2002, and then declined 40% by 2012 at the highest elevations in the forest. Overall, fir appeared to be more impacted on western facing slopes than eastern ones. The population of red spruce experienced a steady decrease in live stem counts, but an increase in live basal area through all years, and at all elevation classes (1675 m, 1830 m, and 1980 m), indicating a normal progression through stand development. Red spruce was also most negatively impacted on western facing slopes. Live stem density was significantly higher (P 0.001) than eastern plots, but live basal area was similar between the two aspects. Atmospheric deposition concentrations of the four main acidic molecules at mt. mitchell all peaked in 1998, but decreased by 2012. These reductions, occurring shortly after tightened regulations in the 1990 amendments to the Clean Air Act may have potential implications for increased forest resilience.

Structural and molecular features of intestinal strictures in rats with Crohn's-like disease

AIm: To develop a new rat model we wanted to gain a better understanding of stricture formation in Crohn’s disease (CD).mETHODS: Chronic colitis was induced locally by the administration of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS). The relapsing inflammation characteristic to CD was mimicked by repeated TNBS treatments. Animals were randomly divided into control, once, twice and three times TNBS-treated groups. Control animals received an enema of saline. Tissue samples were taken from the strictured colonic segments and also adjacent proximally and distally to its 60, 90 or 120 d after the last TNBS or saline administrations. The frequency and macroscopic extent of the strictures were measured on digital photographs. The structural features of strictured gut wall were studied by light- and electron microscopy. Inflammation related alterations in TGF-beta 2 and 3, matrix metalloproteinases 9 (mmP9) and TImP1 mRNA and protein expression were determined by quantitative real-time PCR and western blot analysis. The quantitative distribution of caspase 9 was determined by post-embedding ***: Intestinal strictures first appeared 60 d after TNBS treatments and the frequency of them increased up to day 120. From day 90 an intact lamina epithelialis, reversible thickening of lamina muscularis mucosae and irreversible thickening of the muscularis externa were demonstrated in the strictured colonic segments. Nevertheless the morphological signs of apoptosis were frequently seen and excess extracellular matrix deposition was recorded between smooth muscle cells (SmCs). Enhanced caspase 9 expression on day 90 in the SmCs and on day 120 also in myenteric neurons indicated the induction of apoptosis. The mRNA expression profile of TGF-betas after repeated TNBS doses was characteristic to CD, TGF-beta 2, but not TGF-beta 3 was up-regulated. Background:Vibration controlled transient elastography(VCTE)and controlled attenuation parameter(CAP™)have shown reliable performance predicting fibrosis and steatosis in normal-to overweight patients but have not been validated in severe to morbid *** study aimed at determining the accuracy of VCTE,CAP™and the composite score FibroScan-AST(FAST)in patients with a body mass index(BmI)of≥35 kg/m^(2).methods:Patients scheduled for bariatric-metabolic surgery underwent preoperative VCTE/CAP™measurement,and intraoperative liver *** feasibility and accuracy of VCTE,CAP™and the composite score FAST were retrospectively analysed to evaluate fibrosis,steatosis and active fibrotic non-alcoholic steatohepatitis[NASH+non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)activity score≥4+fibrosis grade≥2]using per protocol(PP)and intent to diagnose(ITD)***:In total,170 patients(median BmI 44.4 kg/m²)were included in the *** biopsy showed NASH,simple steatosis,and normal livers in 60.6%(n=103),28.8%(n=49),and 10.6%(n=18),*** and CAP™delivered reliable results in 90.6%(n=154/170)and 90.5%(n=134/148).The AUC(PP)of VCTE,CAP™,and FAST were 0.687(≥F2),0.786(≥F3),0.703(≥S2),0.738(S3),and 0.780(active fibrotic NASH).The AUC increased to 0.742(≥F2),0.842(≥F3),0.712(≥S2),0.780(S3),and 0.836(active fibrotic NASH)in patients below the median BmI of 44.4 kg/m².Conclusions:VCTE,CAP™and FAST show acceptable accuracy for the detection of fibrosis,steatosis and NASH in a real-life cohort of patients with *** improves in patients with a BmIm^(2).
