Context Hemoglobin-based blood substitutes(HBBSs)are infusible oxygen- carrying liquids that have long shelf lives,have no need for refrigeration or cross- matching,and are ideal for treating hemorrhagic shock in remote *** trials of HBBSs during the last decade have reported increased risks without clinical benefit. Objective To assess the safety of HBBSs in surgical,stroke,and trauma patients. Data Sources Pubmed,EmBASE,and Cochrane Library searches for articles using hemoglobin and blood substitutes from 1980 through march 25,2008;reviews of Food and Drug Administration(FDA)advisory committee meeting materials;and In- ternet searches for company press releases. Study Selection Randomized controlled trials including patients aged 19 years and older receiving HBBSs *** database searches yielded 70 trials of which 13 met these criteria;in addition,data from 2 other trials were reported in 2 press releases,and additional data were included in 1 relevant FDA review. Data Extraction Data on death and myocardial infarction(mI)as outcome variables. Results Sixteen trials involving 5 different products and 3711 patients in varied pa- tient populations were identified.A test for heterogeneity of the results of these trials was not significant for either mortality or mI(for both,I=0%,P(?)60),and data were combined using a fixed-effects ***,there was a statistically significant in- crease in the risk of death(164 deaths in the HBBS-treated groups and 123 deaths in the control groups;relative risk [RR],1.30;95% confidence interval [CI],1.05-1.61) and risk of mI(59 mIs in the HBBS-treated groups and 16 mIs in the control groups;RR,2.71;95% CI,1.67-4.40)with these *** analysis of these trials in- dicated the increased risk was not restricted to a particular HBBS or clinical indication. Conclusion Based on the available data,use of HBBSs is associated with a signifi- cantly increased risk of death and mI.

Climate warming has been more pronounced in the Arctic than elsewhere, resulting in a recent rapid glacial retreat. Over 85% of the Almajallojekna glacier has disappeared over the last 115 years and it is one of the fastest retreating glaciers in Sweden. In 2011 and 2012, at 18 sites in the vicinity of the remaining glacier network, we sampled arthropods and related the species richness, abundance and proportion of herbivores to altitude （ranging from 824 to 1,524 m.a.s.1.） and the age of the site （ranging from 0 to 〉 115 years）. Temperature was measured at six sites and the average annual air temperature ranged from -3.7℃ to 1.1℃. In total, we recorded 3,705 arthropods from 117 species in nine different taxonomic groups. The most abundant and species-rich group was Coleoptera （1,381 individuals, 41 species） followed by Araneae （1,050 individuals, 15 species） and macrolepidoptera （732 individuals, 17 species）. Only at lower altitudes did the abundance and species richness of arthropods increase with increasing age of the site. The results were consistent among the studied taxonomic groups and when controlling for sam- piing intensity using two different approaches. The proportion of herbivores decreased with increasing age of the site and with increasing altitude. Clearly, altitude appears more important than the age of the site and, at higher altitudes, abundance, species richness and herbivory are low [Current Zoology 60 （2）： 203-220, 2014].

Addition of clay-rich subsoil to sandy soil results in heterogeneous soil with clay peds （2-mm） or finely ground （〈 2 mm） clay soil （FG）, which may affect the nutrient availability. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of clay soil particle size （FG or peds） and properties on nutrient availability and organic C binding in sandy soil after addition of residues with low （young kikuyu grass, KG） or high （faba bean, FB） C/N ratio. Two clay soils with high and low smectite percentage, clay and exchangeable Fe and A1 were added to a sandy soil at a rate of 20% （weight/weight） either as FG or peds. Over 45 d, available N and P as well as microbial biomass N and P concentrations and cumulative respiration were greater in soils with residues of KG than FB. For soils with KG residues, clay addition increased available N and initial microbial biomass C and N concentrations, but decreased cumulative respiration and P availability compared to sandy soil without clay. Differences in measured parameters between clay type and size were inconsistent and varied with time except the increase in total organic C in the 〈 53 μm fraction during the experiment, which was greater for soils with FG than with peds. We concluded that the high exchangeable Fe and A1 concentrations in the low-smectite clay soil can compensate a lower clay concentration and proportion of smectite with respect to binding of organic matter and nutrients.

microbial adaptation to salinity can be achieved through synthesis of organic osmolytes,which requires high amounts of energy;however,a single addition of plant residues can only temporarily improve energy supply to soil ***,a laboratory incubation experiment was conducted to evaluate the responses of soil microbes to increasing salinity with repeated additions of plant residues using a loamy sand soil with an electrical conductivity in saturated paste extract(EC_e) of 0.6 dS m^(-1).The soil was kept non-saline or salinized by adding different amounts of NaCl to achieve EC_e of 12.5,25.0 and 50.0 dS m^(-1).The non-saline soil and the saline soils were amended with finely ground pea residues at two rates equivalent to 3.9 and 7.8 g C kg^(-1) soil on days 0,15 *** soils receiving no residues were included as a *** respiration per g C added over 2 weeks after each residue addition was always greater at 3.9 than 7.8 g C kg^(-1) soil and higher in the non-saline soil than in the saline *** the saline soils,the cumulative respiration per g C added was higher after the second and third additions than after the first addition except with3.9 g C kg^(-1) at EC_e of 50 dS m^(_1).Though with the same amount of C added(7.8 g C kg^(-1)),salinity reduced soil respiration to a lesser extent when 3.9 g C kg^(-1) was added twice compared to a single addition of 7.8 g C kg^(-1).After the third residue addition,the microbial biomass C concentration was significantly lower in the soils with EC_e of 25 and 50 dS m^(_1) than in the non-saline soil at3.9 g C kg^(-1),but only in the soil with EC_e of 50 dS m^(-1) at 7.8 g C kg^(-1).We concluded that repeated residue additions increased the adaptation of soil microbial community to salinity,which was likely due to high C availability providing microbes with the energy needed for synthesis of organic osmolytes.

Aims Along central-Asian rivers in arid regions,lowering of the ground-water level constitutes a major threat to the riparian forests,whose tree layers are dominated by Euphrates poplar(Populus euphratica).Some of these fragile ecosystems are supplied with additional(‘eco-logical’)water for protection and *** investigated interrelationships among groundwater distance,stand structure and above-ground wood production(at the tree and the stand level)in *** stands along a groundwater gradient(distances of 2.0-12.0 m)that also included a plot supplied with‘ecological water’.methods We measured the height,diameter at breast height and basal area of poplar trees and determined the annual above-ground wood production for the three most recent years on the basis of tree-ring analyses and allometric regressions at three sites at the upper,mid-dle and lower reaches of the tarim River,Xinjiang,NW *** Findingsthe distribution of age classes differed significantly among the plots:in accordance with their life histories,stands growing at a larger distance to the groundwater harboured a larger fraction of old trees(>80 years)and,in most cases,a smaller fraction of young trees(≤20 years).the annual above-ground wood production per ha was highest on a plot with a short groundwater distance(2.0 m;maxi-mum of the 3-year investigation period:3.0 t ha−1 a−1)and lowest,at a plot with a large distance to the water table(6.6 m;minimum:0.23 t ha^(−1)a^(−1)).However,the plot located close to the groundwater(and to the river)at the middle reaches exhibited a relatively large interannual variation in above-ground wood production,which can be attributed to interannual variations in the river *** the middle and the lower reaches,these interannual variations on plots with the most favourable water supply were even more obvious at the tree *** the fraction of mature trees(60-99 years old),no significant differences in above-ground wood production were

Osmotic potential （OP） of soil solution may be a more appropriate parameter than electrical conductivity （EC） to evaluate the effect of salts on plant growth and soil biomass. However, this has not been examined in detail with respect to microbial activity and dissolved organic matter in soils with different texture. This study evaluated the effect of salinity and sodicity on respiration and dissolved organic matter dynamics in salt-affected soils with different texture. Four non-saline and non-sodic soils differing in texture （S-4, S-13, S-24 and S-40 with 4%, 13%, 24~ and 40~~ clay, respectively） were leached using combinations of 1 mol L-1 NaC1 and 1 mol L-1 CaC12 stock solutions, resulting in EC （1：5 soil：water ratio） between 0.4 and 5.0 dS m-1 with two levels of sodicity （sodium absorption ratio （SAR）〈 3 （non-sodic） and 20 （sodic）, 1：5 soil：water ratio）. Adjusting the water content to levels optimal for microbial activity~ which differed among the soils, resulted in four ranges of OP in all the soils： from -0.06 to -0.24 （controls, without salt added）, -0.55 to -0.92, -1.25 to -1.62 and -2.77 to -3.00 mpa. Finely ground mature wheat straw （20 g kg-1） was added to stimulate microbial activity. At a given EC, cumulative soil respiration was lower in the lighter-textured soils （S-4 and S-13） than in the heavier-textured soils （S-24 and S-40）. Cumulative soil respiration decreased with decreasing OP to a similar extent in all the soils, with a greater decrease on Day 40 than on Day 10. Cumulative soil respiration was greater at SAR ---- 20 than at SAR 〈 3 only at the OP levels between -0.62 and -1.62 mPa on Day 40. In all the soils and at both sampling times, concentrations of dissolved organic C and N were higher at the lowest OP levels （from -2.74 to -3.0 mPa） than in the controls （from -0.06 to -0.24 mPa）. Thus, OP is a better parameter than EC to evaluate the effect of salinity on dissolved organic matter and microbial activity in different textured soils.

Jasmonic acid （JA） is a natural hormone regulator involved in development, responses against woundingand pathogen attack. Upon perception of pathogens, JA is synthesized and mediates a signaling cascade initiating various defense responses. Traditionally, necrotrophic fungi have been shown to be the primary activators of JA- dependent defenses through the JA-receptor, COIl. Conversely, plants infected with biotrophic fungi have classically been associated with suppressing JA-mediated responses. However, recent evidence has shown that certain biotrophic fungal species also trigger activation of JA-mediated responses and mutants deficient in JA signaling show an increase in susceptibility to certain biotrophic fungal pathogens. These findings suggest a new role for JA in defense against fungal biotrophs. This review will focus on recent research advancing our knowledge of JA-dependant responses involved in defense against both biotrophic and necrotrophic fungi.
