There is an increased global demand for activated carbon(AC)in application of water treatment and *** pollutants that have exhibited a greater removal efficiency by AC included but not limited to heavy metals,pharmaceuticals,pesticides,natural organic matter,disinfection by-products,and *** activated carbon(GAC)is mostly used in aqueous so-lutions and adsorption columns for water *** AC is not only costly,but also obtained from non-renewable *** has prompted the search for alternative renewable materials for AC *** wastes present a great potential of such materials because of their availability and carbonaceous *** in turn can reduce on the adverse environmental effects caused by poor disposal of these *** challenges associated with biomass waste based GAC are their low strength and attrition resistance which make them easily disintegrate under aqueous *** paper provides a comprehensive review on recent advances in production of biomass waste based GAC for water treatment and highlights future research *** parameters such as granulation conditions,use of binders,carbonization,activation methods,and their effect on textural properties are *** influencing the adsorption capacities of the derived GACs,adsorption models,adsorption mechanisms,and their regeneration potentials are *** literature reveals that biomass waste materials can produce GAC for use in water treatment with possibilities of being ***,there is a need to explore 1)the effect of preparation pathways on the adsorptive properties of biomass derived GAC,2)sustainable production of biomass derived GAC based on life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis,and 3)adsorption mechanisms of GAC for removal of contaminants of emerging concerns such as microplastics and unregulated disinfection by-products.

Experimental evaluation of rice husk ash for applications in geopolymer mortars

Rice husks obtained from upland and lowland rice varieties were characterized for composition and content of *** of the rice husk varieties was fired at temperatures of 600,800 and 900℃ for a soaking period of 3 *** resultant rice husk ash was analyzed for oxide composition and crystallinity using X-ray fluorescence and diffraction techniques,*** generated amorphous ash with the highest silica content,together with metakaolin,aggregate,water,and an alkaline activator was employed to formulate geo-polymer mortar prisms according to the standard EN *** showed that the content of ash in the varieties ranged from 18.3%to 28.6%dry *** of this,89 wt%-96 wt%was silica,with amorphous and crystalline forms of silica obtained at 600℃ and 900℃,respectively,regardless of the rice ***,at 800℃,the silica in the generated ash exhibited both amorphous and crystalline *** amorphous ash generated at 600℃ was used in formulation of geopolymer *** and flexural strength of the formulated mortar after 7 days of curing was 1.5 and 1.3 MPa,*** results reveal the firing protocol to form pozzolanic ash,with potential applications in mortar production.

Evaluation of Serum Testosterone, Cholesterol and Plasma Glucose Concentrations in Hirsute Women in Bayelsa State

Hirsutism is an endocrine disorder where women develop excess growth of terminal hairs in a male pattern. This study evaluated the concentrations of cholesterol, glucose and testosterone in bearded women in the Amassoma metropolis of Bayelsa state. In a view to determining whether hirsutism has an effect/relationship with the biochemical parameters estimated, a total of 50 bearded and 50 non-bearded women were recruited for this study. Based on a cross-sectional study, group A and B were appropriately matched for age and BMI. The concentrations of the biochemical parameters were measured using WHO-approved method. Bearded females had significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) cholesterol concentration (4.41 ± 1.09 mmol/L) when compared with the non-bearded (control) women. Furthermore, the mean concentrations of testosterone and glucose were higher in the bearded female group when compared with the non-bearded. The study established that women with hirsutism have associated hypertestosteronemia, hypercholesterolemia and hyperglycemia.
