Background and Purpose:carotid and Vertebral Artery Transluminal Angioplasty Study (cAVATAS) patients with carotid stenosis were randomized between endova.c. lar treatment and endarterectomy. The rates of residual severe stenosis and rest enosis and their contribution to recurrent symptoms was ***:Endovas cular patients:were treated by balloon angioplasty alone (88%) or stenting (22 %). Pa.c.es were used in 63%of endarterectomy patients. carotid stenosis was c ategorizedas mild (0%to 49%), moderate (50%to 69%), severe (70%to 99%), or occluded, using standardized Doppler ultrasound criteria at the examination clo sest to 1 month (n=283) and 1 year (n=347) after treatment. Recurrent cerebrovas cular symptoms during follow-up were analyzed. Results:More patients had ≥70 %stenosis of the ipsilateral carotid artery 1 year after endova.c.lar treatment than after endarterectomy (18.5%versus 5.2%, P=0.0001). Residual severe steno sis was present in 6.5%of patients at 1 month after endova.c.lar *** een 1 month and 1 year, restenosis to ≥70%stenosis occurred in 10.5%of the en dova.c.lar group. After endarterectomy,1.7%had residual severe stenosis at 1 mo nth, and 2.5%developed severe restenosis. The results were significantly better after stenting compared with angioplasty alone at 1 month(Pcurrent ipsilateral symptoms were more common in endova.c.lar patients with severe stenosis(5/32 [15.6%]) compared with lesser degrees of stenosis at 1 year (11/141 [7.8%], P=0.02), but most were transient ischemic attacks and n one were disabling or fatal strokes. There were no recurrent symptoms in the 9 e ndarterectomy patients with≥70%stenosis at 1 year. conclusions:carotid stenos is 1 year after endova.c.lar treatment is partly explained by poor initial anato mical results and partly by restenosis. The majority of patients were treated by angioplasty without stenting. Further randomized studies are required to determ ine whether new

Background: Angiotensin-converting enzyme is involved in the pathophysiology of heart failure. We hypothesized that clinical characteristics as well as survival rate in patients with heart failure of different etiologies may be modulated by functional variants DD, ID and II of the angiotensin-converting enzyme gene. Methods: We studied 333 patients with heart failure, aged 43.3±10.5 years, 262(78.7%) men and 71(21.3%) women. Heart failure was a.c.ibed to idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy in 125 patients. Heart failure was caused by ischemic heart disease in 63 patients, chagas’disease in 58, hypertensive heart disease in 41, a.c.holic cardiomyopathy in 24, and was due to other etiologies in 22 patients. Statistical analysis was performed with the χ2 test, Student’s t-test, analysis of varia.c., Kaplan-Meier and cox proportional hazards methods. Results: The DD genotype was associated with increased systolic left ventricular diameter(p=0.031). Earlier onset of symptoms was observed in patients with a.c.holic cardiomyopathy and DD genotype(p=0.033, codominant D) and in patients with hypertensive cardiomyopathy and DD genotype(p=0.048, codominant D; p=0.024, recessive D). Mortality was higher in patients older than 50 years with DD genotype(p=0.007, codominant D; p=0.002, recessive D). Variables independently associated with higher mortality in patients older than 50 years were age, diabetes mellitus, chagas’disease etiology and DD genotype. conclusions: These results add evidence for an association of the DD genotype of the angiotensin-converting enzyme gene with earlier onset of symptoms and decreased survival rate of selected patients with heart failure.

Dehydrated Natural Feed for cats: Influence on Apparent Digestibility coefficient, Feces Scores, and Serum Immune, Antioxidant, and Metabolic Biomarkers

The present study aimed to determine whether natural dehydrated feed (DNF) can replace dry extruded feed while preserving the required daily intake, nutrient digestibility and benefits for immunity and antioxidant response in cats. The animals were divided into two groups of seven animals each. One group received DNF, and the other consumed commercial extruded dry feed (DcF). The experiment lasted 45 days and we measured daily consumption and collected blood and feces samples. The animals in the DNF group showed greater digestibility of fiber and mineral matter than DcF. cats in the DNF group had a higher volume of feces. DNF cats had lower leukocyte and granulocyte counts and cholesterol levels. Serum enzymatic antioxidant responses and non-enzymatic were higher in DNF cats. cats in the DNF group showed lower serum acute phase proteins in addition to a tendency toward a higher concentration of transferrin than in the DcF group. Fecal Escherichia.c.li and total coliform counts of cats fed DNF were higher than DcF. We conclude that the daily consumption of cats is adequate. This feed had greater digestibility of fiber and mineral matter, in addition to an improvement in antioxidant and immunological responses.

Background: We currently have international and national guidelines regarding the assessment and monitoring of clinical signs and humane endpoints in animals used in teaching and resea.c., which make the performa.c. of these activities mandatory for any experiment and professional working in this area. Assigning the severity of a resea.c. experiment is the result of an analysis of records of observations of the animal’s behavior, and clinical signs. The aim of this study was to describe the importa.c. of carrying out a severity assessment associated with clinical and behavioral monitoring of rodents and rabbits during experimentation to maintain the welfare of these animals undergoing scientific resea.c.. Methods: The literature sea.c. was carried out using the following terms: “Monitoring”;“Humane endpoints”;“Animal welfare”, “Rodents”;“Rabbits”, and as connectors “and”;“or”, in the following databases: PubMed;LILAcS/BIREME and SciELO. Results: A total of 987 articles were identified in the databases, and 20 of these studies were included in this review. conclusions: Humane endpoint protocols and procedure severity tables are of the utmost importa.c., both from an ethical point and to refine the results of resea.c. conducted on laboratory animals. They should be drawn up jointly by the teams responsible for the project and the maintena.c. of the animals during the resea.c. period, and the data obtained should be published so that the scientific community can have a.c.ss to it, helping to disseminate these practices, as well as helping to draw up new procedures. Monitoring and evaluating the welfare and clinical condition of animals undergoing scientific resea.c. procedures is the responsibility of the professors, resea.c.ers, veterinarians, and animal facility coordinators. The inception of a Paleotethyan magmatic a.c.in Iberia

This paper presents a.c.mpilation of recent U-Pb （zircon） ages of late carboniferous-early Permian （Lc EP） ca.c.alkaline batholiths from lberia, together with a petrogenetic interpretation of magma generation based on comparisons with Mesozoic and Tertiary cordilleran batholiths and experimental melts. Zircon U-Pb ages distributed over the range ca. 315-280 Ma, indicate a linkage between ca.c.alkaline magmatism, Iberian orocline generation and Paleotethys subduction. It is also shown that Iberian Lc-EP ca.c.lkaline batholiths present unequivocal subduction-related features comparable with typical cordilleran batholiths of the Pacific Americas active margin, although geochemical features were partially obscured by local modifications of magmas at the level of emplacement by country rock assimilation. When and how Lc-EP ca.c.alkaline batholiths formed in Iberia is then discussed, and a new and somewhat controversial interpretation for their sources and tectonic setting （plume-assisted relamination） is suggested. The batholiths are proposed to have formed during the subduction of the Paleotethys oceanic plate （Pangaea self-subduction） and, consequently, they are unrelated to Variscan collision. The origin of the Iberian batholiths is related to the Eurasian active margin and probably represents the inception of a Paleotethvan a.c.in the core of Pangaea.

An Optimized Divide-and-conquer Algorithm for the closest-Pair Problem in the Planar case

We present an engineered version of the divide-and-conquer algorithm for finding the closest pair of points, within a given set of points in the XY-plane. For this version of the algorithm we show that only two pairwise comparisons are required in the combine step, for each point that lies in the 25-wide vertical slab. The correctness of the algorithm is shown for all Minkowski dista.c.s with p ≥ 1. We also show empirically that, although the time complexity of the algorithm is still O（n lgn）, the reduction in the total number of comparisons leads to a significant reduction in the total execution time, for inputs with size sufficiently large.

The new ternary YbZn0.7Inl.3 compound was synthesized in evacuated quartz ampoules at 900 ℃, followed by annealing at 400 ℃. It crystallized in the UHg2 structure type with a=0.47934（5） nm, c=0.36955（5） nm, V=0.073535（15） nm3. The shortest dista.c.s between the atoms in this structure were equal to 0.3696 nm （Yb-Yb）, 0.3328 nm （Yb-M） and 0.2767 nm （M M）, respectively. Magnetization measurements indicated that the title compound exhibited a paramagnetic behavior down to 2 K, with antiferromagnetic-like interactions. ca.c.lated magnetic moment for YbZn0.7inl.3 （μeft =3.86μB/Yb） could indicate mixed valence state of Yb.

Since 2014,"Bring Your Own Data"workshops(BYODs)have been organised to inform people about the process and benefits of making resources Findable,a.c.ssible,Interoperable,and Reusable(FAIR,and the FAIRification process).The BYOD workshops'content and format differ depending on their goal,context,and the background and needs of ***-focused BYODs educate domain experts on how to make their data FAIR to find new answers to resea.c. ***-focused BYODs promote the benefits of making data FAIR and instruct project managers and policy-makers on the characteristics of FAIRification ***-focused BYODs gather software developers and experts on FAIR to implement or improve software resources that are used to support ***,these BYODs intend to foster collaboration between different types of stakeholders involved in data management,curation,and reuse(*** experts,trainers,developers,data owners,data analysts,FAIR experts).The BYODs also serve as an opportunity to learn what kind of support for FAIRification is needed from different communities and to develop teaching materials based on practical examples and *** this paper,we detail the three different structures of the BYODs and describe examples of early BYODs related to plant breeding data,and rare disease registries and biobanks,which have shaped the structure of the *** discuss the latest insights into making BYODs more productive by leveraging our almost ten years of training experience in these workshops,including successes and encountered ***,we examine how the participants'feedback has motivated the resea.c. on FAIR,including the development of workflows and software.

Biocompatibility and biotoxicity of in-situ synthesized carboxylated nanodiamond-cobalt oxide nanocomposite

A nanocomposite that incorporates cobalt oxide（co3O4） and nanodiamond（ND） can present both high magnetism（co3O4） and high hardness（ND）. ND particles have potential applications in a variety of fields such as protein immobilization, biosensors, therapeutic molecule delivery and bio-imaging. However,limited information is available in literature on the in-situ synthesis of biocompatible magnetic materials and also on their potential biotoxicity as a result of their entry into environmental compartments and subsequent interaction with biota. In this work, a new kind of bio-compatible magnetic material –carboxylated nanodiamond（c ND） and co3O4 was synthesized to obtain the c ND-co3O4 *** synthesis procedure involved in-situ and chemical reduction of cobalt chloride（cocl（26）H2O） and sodium borohydrate（NaBH4）. The synthesized cND-co3O4 nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The cyto-genotoxicity of the synthesized nanocomposite material was studied by using onion（Allium cepa L.） as a test model with concentrations of 5, 10 and 20 μg/ml. The study was also extended to cND and co3O4 materials for comparison purpose. co3O4 and cND exhibited their contrasting effects on mitosis and other cyto-genotoxic indices studied herein. This work provided fundamental data on the synthesis and the bio-toxicity of the c ND-co3O4 nanocomposite, which, in turn, can help to expand their multidisciplinary applications.
