Preparation of phosphorus-doped carbon nanospheres and their electrocatalytic performance for O_2 reduction

Phosphorus-doped carbon nanospheres without any metal residues were synthesized and characterized. The results revealed that the doping phosphorus atoms could significantly improve the electrocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon for the oxygen-reduction reaction （ORR） both in acidic and alkaline media, and the materials exhibited high electrocatalytic activity, long-term stability, and excellent tolerance to crossover effects especially in alkaline media. Quantum mechanics calculations with the density functional theory demonstrated that the changes in charge density and energetic characteristics of frontier orbitals for the P-doped graphene sheet could facilitate the ORR.

Plants have diverse strategies to cope with phosphorus （P） deficiency. To better understand how maize responds to P deficiency, a field experiment with two P levels, 0 and 100 kg P205 ha-1 （P0 and P100, respectively）, was carried out as a part of a long-term Pfertilizer field trial. Plant and soil analyses showed that P-deficient maize reduced its growth rate, increased P use efficiency, and formed more thin roots with the diameter less than 0.6 mm at jointing and silking stages, compared to the plants treated with P100. Further, there were no differences in major inorganic P fractions （Ca2-P, Cas-P, Al-P, Fe-P, occluded P and Ca10-P） between the rhizospheric and bulk soils at each harvest, even when soil Olsen-P was only 1.38 mg kg-1. These results suggested that maize responded to P deficiency by reducing the internal P demand for growth and increasing P acquisition ability by favorable root morphological alteration at low carbon cost.

BACKGROUND： The treatment of borderline resectable pancreatic head cancer（BRPHC） is still controversial and challenging. The artery-first approaches are described to be the important options for the early determination. Whether these approaches can achieve an increase R0 rate, better bleeding control and increasing long-term survival for BRPHC are still controversial. We compared a previously reported technique, a modified artery-first approach（MAFA）, with conventional techniques for the surgical treatment of ***： A total of 117 patients with BRPHC undergone pancreaticoduodenectomy（PD） from January 2013 to June 2015 were included. They were divided into an MAFA group（n=78） and a conventional-technique group（n=39）. Background characteristics, operative data and complications were compared between the two ***： Mean operation time was significantly shorter in the MAFA group than that in the conventional-technique group（313 vs 384 min; P=0.014）; mean volume of intraoperative blood loss was significantly lower in the MAFA group than that in the conventional-technique group（534 vs 756 m L; P=0.043）; and mean rate of venous resection was significantly higher in the conventional-technique group than that in the MAFA group（61.5% vs 35.9%; P=0.014）. Pathologic data, early mortality and morbidity were not different significantly between the two ***： MAFA is safe, simple, less time-consuming, less intraoperative blood loss and less venous resection, and therefore, may become a standard surgical approach to PD for BRPHC with the superior mesenteric vein-portal vein involvement but without superior mesenteric artery invasion.

BACKGROUND: At present, imaging is used not only to show the form of images, but also to make three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions and visual simulations based on original data to guide clinical surgery. This study aimed to assess the use of a medical image-processing system in liver transplantation surgery. METHODS: The data of abdominal 64-slice spiral CT scan were collected from 200 healthy volunteers and 37 liver cancer patients in terms of hepatic arterial phase, portal phase, and hepatic venous phase. A 3D model of abdominal blood vessels including the abdominal aorta system, portal vein system, and inferior vena cava system was reconstructed by an abdominal image processing system to identify vascular variations. Then, a 3D model of the liver was reconstructed in terms of hepatic segmentation and liver volume was calculated. The Free Form modeling system with a PHANTOM force feedback device was used to simulate the real liver transplantation environment, in which the total process of liver transplantation was completed. RESULTS: The reconstructed model of the abdominal blood vessels and the liver was clearly demonstrated to be three-dimensionally consistent with the anatomy of the liver, in which the variations of abdominal blood vessels were identified and liver segmentation was performed digitally. In the model, liver transplantation was simulated subsequently, and different modus operandi were selected successfully. CONCLUSION: The digitized medical image processing system may be valuable for liver transplantation.

Background: Medical therapy is rarely effective inpatients with fulminant Wilson's disease (FWD). Livertransplantation is limited by the lack of donor liver inmost patients with FWD at the time of diagnosis. NewWilson's index, model for end-stage liver disease (MELD)and Child-Pugh score are useful tools for decisionmakingof liver transplantation;however, none of them isan independent decisive tool. It is worthwhile to explorea more effective and practical therapeutic strategy andreevaluate the prediction systems for patients with ***: Nine patients with FWD associated withhemolytic crisis and fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) wereinvestigated. The clinical presentation, prognostic scoreand medical therapies of the patients were ***: In 7 of the 9 patients with FWD who receivedthe comprehensive therapy of corticosteroid, copperchelatingagent (dimercaptopropansulfonate sodium)and therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), 6 patientsrecovered from FHF. The remaining one had beenimproved through the comprehensive therapy but died ofsepticemia 51 days later. Two patients with spontaneousbacterial peritonitis (SBP) died from liver failure inthree or five hospital days without plasma exchangeor chelating therapy. All of the 9 patients with FWDpresented with acute hepatic failure, severe jaundice andmild to severe hemolytic anemia. No marked differencein the incidence of severe hemolytic anemia was detectedbetween the survival and deceased groups. However,the incidence and the degree of hepatic encephalopathy(HE) in the non-survival group were higher than thosein the survival group. Unlike the deceased group, thesurvival group had no complications induced by bacterialinfection. Using titrimetric method,enzymatic behavior of lipase AK against fullerene end-capped polycaprolactone(C60-PCL) was studied for the first time,compared with polycaprolactone(PCL).The results showed that degradation of both C60-PCL and PCL by lipase followed Mechaelis-Menten equation,with the degradation parameters of PCL and C60-PCL were 0.75 mg mL-1 and 0.16 mg mL-1 for Km,and 0.90 mL h-1 and 0.43 mL h-1 for Vmax,respectively.C60-PCL had a slower degradation rate than PCL under the same *** data indicated that the introduction of fullerene enabled PCL hard to be degraded by lipase.

Populus euphratlca Olve. is a dominant tree species in Ejlnaa Oasis of the lower reaches of the Helhe River, inner Mongolia, China. In recent years, the population of this species has shown signs of degradation that are suggested to be probably associated with the decrease of surface water. In this study, the history of river runoff In this region was examined with a dendrochronological study of P. euphratica from four sites. It Is found that tree-ring widths In the all sites have negative correlation with runoffs of all months at the Zhengylxla hydrological station. Principal component （PC） analysis of the tree-ring chronologies shows that the first PC （PC1） accounts for 49.98% of the total variances. The first PC Is found to have a significantly negative correlation with runoffs In March and April （- 0.52 and - 0.43, respectively, P 〈 0.05）. This negative correlation might be related to variations In the depth of underground water.

Herbal extracts have been extensively used worldwide for their application on memory improvement, especially among aged and memory-deficit populations. In the present study, the memory loss induced by human Abeta protein over-expression in fruitfly Alzheimer's disease(AD) model was rescued by multiple extracts from Gardenia jasminoides. Three extracts that rich with gardenia yellow, geniposide, and gardenoside components showed distinct rescue effect on memory loss. Further investigation on adding gardenoside into a formula of Ganoderma lucidum, Panax notoginseng and Panax ginseng(GPP) also support its therapeutic effects on memory improvement. Interestingly, the application of GPP and gardenoside did not alter the accumulation of Abeta proteins but suppressed the expression of immune-related genes in the brain. These results revealed the importance and relevancy of anti-inflammation process and the underlying mechanisms on rescuing memory deficits, suggesting the potential therapeutic use of the improved GPP formulation in improving cognition in defined population in the future.
