Improving wood volume predictions in dry tropical forest in the semi-arid Brazil

The volumetric variability of dry tropical forests in Brazil and the scarcity of studies on the subject show the need for the development of techniques that make it possible to obtain adequate and accurate wood volume *** this study,we analyzed a database of thinning trees from a forest management plan in the Contendas de sincoráNational Forest,southwestern Bahia state,*** data set included a total of 300 trees with a trunk diameter ranging from 5 to 52 ***,validation and statistical selection of four volumetric models were *** to the difference in height values for the same diameter and the low correlation between both variables,we do not suggest models which only use the diameter at breast height(DBH)variable as a predictor because they accommodate the largest estimation *** comparing the best single entry model(Hohenald-Krenn)with the spurr model(best fit model),it is noted that the exclusion of height as a predictor causes the values of 136.44 and 0.93 for Akaike information criterion(AIC)and adjusted determination coefficient(R2 adj),which are poorer than the second best model(schumacher-Hall).Regarding the minimum sample size,errors in estimation(root mean square error(RmsE)and bias)of the best model decrease as the sample size increases,especially when a larger number of trees with DBH≥15.0 cm are randomly *** sampling by diameter class produces smaller volume prediction errors than random sampling,especially when considering all *** summary,the spurr and schumacher-Hall models perform *** models suggest that the total variance explained in the estimates is not less than 95%,producing reliable forecasts of the total volume with *** estimates indicate that the bias around the average is not greater than 7%.Our results support the decision to use regression methods to build models and estimate their parameters,seeking stratification strategies in diameter classes for the sample trees.

The ultra-sonication of minerals in swine feed

A sample preparation method based on ultrasound assisted-extraction （UAE） of Ca, mg and P from swine feed has been described. The experiment was performed to cover the variables influencing the sonication process and, the method validation using standard reference material. Final solutions obtained upon sonication were analyzed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry （for Ca and mg） and by UV-vis spectrophotometry （for P）. The best conditions for metal extraction were as follows： sample mass： 100 mg in 20 mL 0.10 mol/L HCI, a particle size：〈60 lam, sonication time： 5 cycles of 10 s and ultrasound power： 102 W. The UAE method was applied in digestibility assays in different piglet feeds and their results showed that it is highly comparable （P 〉 0.05） to the other methods used for such purposes, as block digestion, and offered a Ca, mg and P method of quantification limit of 10.6, 12.4 and 14 mg/kg, respectively. The major advantages of the UAE method compared to other methods are the high treatment rate, low reagent usage in the extracts and, it does not generate toxic residues that might negatively affect human health and the environment, accompanied by good precision and accuracy.

The new properties of engineered nanoparti- cles drive the need for new knowledge on the safety, fate, behavior and biologic effects of these particles on organisms and ecosystems. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles have been used extensively for a wide range of applica- tions, e.g, self-cleaning surface coatings, solar cells, water treatment agents, topical sunscreens. Within this scenario increased environmental exposure can be expected but data on the ecotoxicological evaluation ofnanoparticles are still scarce. The main purpose of this work was the evaluation of effects of TiO2 nanoparticles in several organisms, covering different trophic levels, using a battery of aquatic assays. Using fish as a vertebrate model organism tissue histological and ultrastructural observations and the stress enzyme activity were also studied. TiO2 nanoparticles （Aeroxide~ P25）, two phase composition ofanatase （65%） and rutile （35%） with an average particle size value of 27.64-11 nm were used. Results on the ECs0 for the tested aquatic organisms showed toxicity for the bacteria, the algae and the crustacean, being the algae the most sensitive tested organism. The aquatic plant Lemna minor showed no effect on growth. The fish Carassius auratus showed no effect on a 21 day survival test, though at a biochemical level the cytosolic Glutathione-s-Transferase total activity, in intestines, showed a general significant decrease （p〈0.05） after 14 days of exposure for all tested concentrations. The presence of TiO2 nanoparticles aggregates were observed in the intestine lumen but their internalization by intestine cells could not be confirmed.

Emerging sub-synchronous interactions(ssI)in wind-integrated power systems have added intense attention after numerous incidents in the Us and China due to the involvement of series compensated transmission lines and power electronics *** phenomenon occurs when two power system elements exchange energy below the synchro-nous *** phenomenon related to wind power plants is one of the most significant challenges to main-taining stability,while ssI phenomenon in practical wind farms,which has been observed recently,has not yet been described on the source of conventional ssI *** paper first explains the traditional development of ssI and its classification as given by the IEEE,and then it proposes a classification of ssI according to the current research status,reviews several mitigation techniques and challenges,and discusses analysis techniques for *** paper also describes the effect of the active damping controllers,control scheme parameters,degree of series compensation,and various techniques used in wind power plants(WPPs).In particular,a supplementary damping controller with converter controllers in Doubly Fed Induction Generator based WPPs is briefly *** paper provides a real-istic viewpoint and a potential outlook for the readers to properly deal with ssI and its mitigation techniques,which can help power engineers for the planning,economical operation,and future expansion of sustainable development.

Green macroalgae,e.g.,Ulva lactuca,are valuable bioactive sources of nutrients;but algae recalcitrant cell walls,composed of a complex cross-linked matrix of polysaccharides,can compromise their utilization as feedstuffs for monogastric *** study aimed to evaluate the ability of pre-selected Carbohydrate-Active enZymes(CAZymes)and sulfatases to degrade *** cell walls and release nutritive compounds.A databank of 199 recombinant CAZymes and sulfatases was tested in vitro for their action towards *** cell wall *** enzymes were incubated with the macroalga,either alone or in combination,to release reducing sugars and decrease fluorescence intensity of Calcofluor White stained cell *** individual action of a polysaccharide lyase family 25(PL25),an ulvan lyase,was shown to be the most efficient in cell wall *** ulvan lyase treatment,in triplicate measures,promoted the release of 4.54 g/L(Psugars,a mono-and oligosaccharides release of 11.4 and 11.2 mmol/100 g of dried alga(Pspectively,and a decrease of 41.7%(Pscence,in comparison to *** ability of ulvan lyase treatment to promote the release of nutritional compounds from alga biomass was also evaluated.A release of some monounsaturated fatty acids was observed,particularly the health beneficial 18:1c9(Psignificant release of total fatty acids(P>0.05),proteins(P?0.861)or pigments(P>0.05)was *** results highlight the capacity of a single recombinant ulvan lyase(PL25 family)to incompletely disrupt *** cell *** enzyme could enhance the bioaccessibility of *** bioactive products with promising utilization in the feed industry.

XBAT35, a Novel Arabidopsis RING E3 Ligase Exhibiting Dual Targeting of Its splice Isoforms, Is Involved in Ethylene-mediated Regulation of Apical Hook Curvature

The Arabidopsis XBAT35 is one of five structurally related ankyrin repeat-containing Really Interesting New Gene （RING） E3 ligases involved in ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation, which plays key roles in a wide range of cel- lular processes. Here, we show that the XBAT35 gene undergoes alternative splicing, generating two transcripts that are constitutively expressed in all plant tissues. The two splice variants derive from an exon skipping event that excludes an in-frame segment from the XBAT35 precursor mRNA, giving rise to two protein isoforms that differ solely in the presence of a nuclear localization signal （NLs）. Transient expression assays indicate that the isoform lacking the NLs localizes in the cytoplasm of plant cells, whereas the other is targeted to the nucleus, accumulating in nuclear speckles. Both isoforms are functional E3 ligases, as assessed by in vitro ubiquitination assays. Two insertion mutant alleles and RNA-interference （RNAi） silencing lines for XBAT35 display no evident phenotypes under normal growth conditions, but exhibit hyper- sensitivity to the ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylate （ACC） during apical hook exaggeration in the dark, which is rescued by an inhibitor of ethylene perception. Independent expression of each XBAT35 splice variant in the mutant background indicates that the two isoforms may differentially contribute to apical hook formation but are both functional in this ethylene-mediated response. Thus, XBAT35 defines a novel player in ethylene signaling involved in negatively regulating apical hook curvature, with alternative splicing controlling dual targeting of this E3 ubiquitin ligase to the nuclear and cytoplasmic compartments.

Biometric and ICL-related risk factors associated to sub-optimal vaults in eyes implanted with implantable collamer lenses

Background:To identify biometric and implantable collamer lens(ICL)-related risk factors associated with suboptimal postoperative vault in eyes implanted with phakic ***:This study reports a retrospective case series of the first operated eye in 360 patients implanted with myopic spherical or toric ***,white-to-white(WTW),central keratometry(Kc)and central corneal thickness(CCT)were measured using the ***-segment optical coherence tomography(As-OCT,Visante)was applied preoperatively for measuring the horizontal anterior-chamber angle-to-angle distance(ATA),internal anterior chamber depth(ACD),crystalline lens rise(CLR),anterior-chamber angle(ACA)and postoperatively the *** were divided into three vault groups:low(LVG:≤250μm),optimal(OVG:>250 andm)and high(HVG:≥1000μm).multinomial logistic regression(mLR)was used to find the sub-optimal vault ***:mLR showed that CLR,ICL size minus the ATA(ICL size-ATA),age,ICL spherical equivalent(ICLsE)and ICL size as contributing factors for sub-optimal vaults(pseudo-R2=0.40).Increased CLR(OR:1.01,CI:1.00-1.01)and less myopic ICLsE(OR:1.22,CI:1.07-1.40)were risk factors for low *** ICL size-ATA(OR:41.29,CI:10.57-161.22)and the 13.7mm ICL(OR:7.08,CI:3.16-15.89)were risk factors for high vaults,whereas less myopic ICLsE(OR:0.85,CI:0.76-0.95)and older age(OR:0.92,CI:0.88-0.98)were protective ***:High CLR and low ICLsE were the major risk factors in eyes presenting low *** the opposite direction,ICL size-ATA was the major contributor for high *** relationship was more critical in higher myopic ICLsE,younger eyes and when 13.7mm ICL were *** findings show that factors influencing the vault have differentiated weight of influence depending on the type of vault(low,optimal or high).

The Influence of Keratometry on Visual and Refractive Outcomes after myopic LAsER <i>in situ</i>Keratomileusis

To evaluate the effect of preoperative keratometry on visual and refractive outcomes after myopic LAsER in situ Keratomileusis (LAsIK) in eyes with preoperative spherical equivalent (sE) of -6.00D or less. material and methods: A retrospective study enrolling clinical records of 482 eyes of 275 patients with myopia who underwent LAsIK between 2009 and 2016. subjects were grouped according to the degree of preoperative mean keratometry (Km), into three groups: Group 1 (Flat Cornea): Km ≤ 42.00 diopters (D);Group 2: 42.00 46.00D;Group 3 (steep Cornea): Km ≥ 46.00D. To evaluate the prognostic impact of keratometry in myopic LAsIK, we considered the results measured at 6 months postoperatively, including uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), postoperative sphere, cylinder, sE and its variation. Results: The mean preoperative sE was -3.91 ± 1.54D, ranging between -0.88 and -6.00D. The percentage of eyes achieving a postoperative sE of ±0.50D was 39.5%, 31.8% and 26% in groups 1, 2 and 3 respectively. moreover, in group 3, 14.3% of the eyes had a residual sE of -2.00D or greater, contrasting with the groups 1 and 2 with only 6% - 7%. These results were found to be statistically significant. Concerning UDVA, eyes achieving 20/25 or more were 81.5%, 81.8% and 71.5%, and 20/50 or less were 6.7%, 6.2% and 11.7% in groups 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Conclusions: myopic eyes with steeper corneas seem to have greater tendency to undercorrection, also presenting worse visual outcomes.
