Influence of Production Factors on the Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Fermented Cassava Dough and Sensory Evaluation of Attieke

Attieke is an Ivorian semolina which obtained by fermenting, pressing and steaming cassava dough. Attieke production remains a traditional activity carried out by less literate women. However, perceived differences in measurable factors and attieke qualities require an investigation of their influence on the characteristics of the pressed dough and attieke. The aim of this study is to improve the quality of the dough in relation to that of the attieke produced. The experiment was carried out on 4 production factors, namely the type of boiled or braised ferment, the incorporation rate of the ferment between 8 and 10%, the addition of oil from 0.1 to 1% and the fermentation time from 12 to 15 hours applied to the Improved African Cassava (IAC) variety. A complete experiment design of 16 samples of fermented dough and attieke was employed. These samples underwent physic-chemical analyses for the fermented dough and sensory evaluation for the attieke. It was found that, except for titratable acidity, reducing sugar content and ash content, the physico-chemical characteristics of the dough of IAC variety were significantly influenced by all production factors and their interaction. Fermentation time significantly influences 60% of the physico-chemical characteristics of the fermented dough. The type of ferment, the oil addition and the ferment rate have a significant influence at 40% of these characteristics. At the sensory level, color, acidity and grain binding with an explained variance of 34.60% were essential for the appreciation of the attieke samples. Thus, these production factors could be considered for the improvement of the fermented dough and attieke production process.

Skin is widely used as a drug delivery route due to its easy access and the possibility of using relatively painless methods for the administration of bioactive ***,the barrier properties of the skin,along with its multilayer structure,impose severe restrictions on drug transport and ***,bioengineered models aimed at emulating the skin have been developed not only for optimizing the transdermal transport of different drugs and testing the safety and toxicity of substances but also for understanding the biological processes behind skin *** though in vivo research is often preferred to study biological processes involving the skin,in vitro and ex vivo strategies have been gaining increasing relevance in recent ***,there is a noticeably increasing adoption of in vitro and ex vivo methods by internationally accepted ***,microfluidic organ-on-a-chip devices are nowadays emerging as valuable tools for functional and behavioural skin *** in miniaturization,automation and reliability still need to be addressed in order to create skin models that can predict skin behaviour in a robust,high-throughput manner,while being compliant with regulatory issues,standards and *** this review,skin models for transdermal transport,wound repair and cutaneous toxicity will be discussed with a focus on high-throughput *** microfluidic strategies driven by advancements in microfabrication technologies will also be revised as a way to improve the efficiency of existing models,both in terms of complexity and throughput.

Temperature Trends on Gran Canaria (Canary Islands). An Example of Global Warming over the Subtropical Northeastern Atlantic

The variation in temperature on the island of Gran Canaria is studied using the method applied to the nearby island of Tenerife [1]. An upward warming trend of 0.09°C ± 0.05°C (α = 0.01) was seen from 1946 to date, which has accelerated since the seventies to 0.17°C ± 0.10°C (α = 0.01). The increase was higher at night (0.11°C ± 0.05°C) than by day (0.08°C ± 0.06°C), so the temperature range decreased slightly. These values are similar to those of Tenerife and the time series of anomalies for the two islands are highly correlated. On the coast the same relationship to the sea surface temperature was found as in Tenerife, but in the mid-altitude areas to windward, some differences were detected that are hypothetically attributable to the different relief of the two islands.

low platelet count: Predictor of death and graft loss after liver transplantation

BACKGROUND The impact of platelets on liver transplantation(lT) is well recognized, but not completely understood. Platelets exert dichotomous effects on the graft and on the patient. On the one hand, they are essential for primary hemostasis and tissue repair and regeneration. On the other hand, they support ischemia/reperfusion injury and inflammatory processes. Recent evidence has shown a new role for platelet count(PC) in predicting outcomes after *** To evaluate if low PC is a predictor of short-and long-term outcomes after *** Four hundred and eighty consecutive lT patients were retrospectively *** from the preoperative to the seventh postoperative day(POD) were considered. C-statistic analysis defined the ideal cutoff point for PC. Cox regression was performed to check whether low PC was a predictor of death,retransplantation or primary changes in graft function within one year after *** The highest median PC was 86 × 109/l [interquartile range(IQR) = 65–100 ×109/l] on seventh POD, and the lowest was 51 × 109/l(IQR = 38–71 × 109/l) on third POD. The C-statistic defined a PC l on fifth POD as the ideal cutoff point for predicting death and retransplantation. In the multivariate analysis, platelets l on 5 POD was an independent risk factor for death at 12 mo after lT [hazard ratio(HR) = 2.01; 95% confidence interval(CI) 1.06-3.79;P = 0.031]. In the Cox regression, patients with PC l on 5 POD had worse graft survival rates up to one year after lT(HR = 2.76; 95%CI 1.52-4.99; P =0.001).CONClUSION PC l on 5 POD is an independent predictor of death in the first year after lT. These results are in agreement with other studies that indicate that low PC after lT is associated with negative outcomes.

Oncologic aspects of the decision-making process for surgical approach for colorectal liver metastases progressing during chemotherapy
