Assessing the performance of decision tree and neural network models in mapping soil properties

To build any spatial soil database, a set of environmental data including digital elevation model(DEM) and satellite images beside geomorphic landscape description are essentials. Such a database, integrates field observations and laboratory analyses data with the results obtained from qualitative and quantitative models. So far, various techniques have been developed for soil data processing. The performance of Artificial Neural Network(ANN) and Decision Tree(DT) models was compared to map out some soil attributes in Alborz Province, Iran. Terrain attributes derived from a DEM along with Landsat 8 ETM+, geomorphology map, and the routine laboratory analyses of the studied area were used as input data. The relationships between soil properties(including sand, silt, clay, electrical conductivity, organic carbon, and carbonates) and the environmental variables were assessed using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient and Principle Components Analysis. Slope, elevation, geomforms, carbonate index, stream network, wetness index, and the band’s number 2, 3, 4, and 5 were the most significantly correlated variables. ANN and DT did not show the same accuracy in predicting all parameters. The DT model showed higher performances in estimating sand(R^2=0.73), silt(R^2=0.70), clay(R^2=0.72), organic carbon(R^2=0.71), and carbonates(R^2=0.70). While the ANN model only showed higher performance in predicting soil electrical conductivity(R^2=0.95). The results showed that determination the best model to use, is dependent upon the relation between the considered soil properties with the environmental variables. However, the DT model showed more reasonable results than the ANN model in this study. The results showed that before using a certain model to predict variability of all soil parameters, it would be better to evaluate the efficiency of all possible models for choosing the best fitted model for each property. Deformation parameter changes in fission mass yields within the systematic statistical scission-point model

A capillary force model for interactions between two spheres

Based on the method of energy principle, an analytical approach for computing the capillary force for sphere/sphere geometry is presented in this paper. In modeling the capillary force, we consider spheres with both equal and non-equal radii, for both symmetric and asymmetric configurations at liquid/solid interfaces. We use numerical analysis to investigate the validity and efficiency of the derived model. The effect of various parameters including humidity, distance between two spheres, radii of spheres and contact angles on the meniscus force are investigated. Finally the results obtained from the model are compared with experimental measurements, and the accuracy and precision of the presented approach is verified.

Estimation of the axial capacity of high-strength concrete-filled steel tube columns using artificial neural network,random forest,and extreme gradient boosting approaches

The study aims to develop machine learning-based mechanisms that can accurately predict the axial capacity of high-strength concrete-filled steel tube(CFST)*** predicting the axial capacity of a CFST column is always challenging for *** artificial neural networks(ANNs),random forest(RF),and extreme gradient boosting(XG-Boost),a total of 165 experimental data sets were *** selected input parameters included the steel tensile strength,concrete compressive strength,tube diameter,tube thickness,and column *** results indicated that the ANN and RF demonstrated a coefficient of determination(R2)value of 0.965 and 0.952 during the training and 0.923 and 0.793 during the testing *** most effective technique was the XG-Boost due to its high efficiency,optimizing the gradient boosting,capturing complex patterns,and incorporating regularization to prevent *** outstanding R2 values of 0.991 and 0.946 during the training and testing were *** to flexibility in model hyperparameter tuning and customization options,the XG-Boost model demonstrated the lowest values of root mean square error and mean absolute error compared to the other *** to the findings,the diameter of CFST columns has the greatest impact on the output,while the column length has the least influence on the ultimate bearing capacity.

Kinetic study on photocatalytic degradation of Acid Orange 52 in a baffled reactor using TiO_2 nanoparticles

In this study, a baffled photocatalytic reactor was used for the treatment of colored wastewater containing the azo dye of Acid Orange 52(AO52). A study on the active species of the photocatalytic process using TiO_2 nanoparticles indicated that hydroxyl radical and superoxide have the greatest contribution to the dye degradation process *** that a level of biological oxygen demand/chemical oxygen demand(BOD5/COD) equal to 0.4 was achieved after about 5 hr from the beginning of the experiment, the reactor seems to be capable of purifying the wastewater containing AO52 dye after this time in order to discharge into a biological treatment system to continue the treatment *** results of the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(LC-MS) test showed that during the first 4 hr of the experiment, with the breakdown of the azo bond, the contaminant was decomposed into the benzene annular compounds with less toxicity indicating a reduction in the toxicity of wastewater after removing the dye agent. The study on the kinetics of these reactions followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model in all conditions and corresponded well to Langmuir–Hinshelwood model. According to the kinetic model for the simultaneous occurrence of possible pathways, the kinetic constant of production and degradation of intermediate products in optimal conditions was estimated to be between 0.0029 and 0.0391 min^(-1).

Effects of strain-induced melt activation treatment on the microstructure and properties of Zn sacrificial anodes

The microstructural properties and electrochemical performance of zinc(Zn)sacrificial anodes during strain-induced melt activation(SIMA)were investigated in this *** samples were subjected to a compressive ratio of 20%-50% at various temperatures(425-435℃)and durations(5-30 min).Short-term electrochemical tests(anode tests)based on DNV-RP-B401 and potentiodynamic polarization tests were performed in 3.5wt%NaCl solution to evaluate the electrochemical efficiency and corrosion behavior of the samples,*** electrochemical test results for the optimum sample confirmed that the corrosion current density declined by 90% and the anode efficiency slightly decreased relative to that of the raw ***-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy,scanning electron microscopy,metallographic images,and microhardness profiles showed the accumulation of alloying elements on the boundary and the conversion of uniform corrosion into localized corrosion,hence the decrease of the Zn sacrificial anode’s efficiency after the SIMA process.

Different methods of enhanced oil recovery have been used to produce trapped *** of these methods is carbonated water injection in which CO2 contained water is injected in reservoirs in order to decrease free CO2 injection mobility,increase water viscosity and store/remove produced greenhouse CO2 gas *** enhanced oil recovery method is smart water injection at which the ions in brine are modified in order to make controlled reactions with distributed ions on the surface of rock to cause more hydrocarbon ***,combination of these two methods may also have a great effect on enhancing oil recovery or may result in recovery factor less than each method used *** this paper hybrid smart carbonated water injection method is investigated to study its applicability in oil recovery using core flooding *** experimental core flooding setup was designed to perform different types of EOR methods for the sake of recovery comparison with the new hybrid *** effect of both brine content and volume of CO2 is determining in hybrid EOR *** main findings of this work show that the hybrid smart carbonated water results in the highest recovery factor in comparison to the most well-known EOR methods for carbonate cores.
