Objective: Nutritional deficiencies are associated with increased morbidity and mortality during and after surgery. The present study evaluated nitrogen retention after transoperative intravenous infusion of amino acids and glucose. Design: Prospective study. Setting: Large community hospital. Patients: 18 randomly chosen patients undergoing medium or major surgeries. Interventions and Measurements: The experimental design included a 12-hour period before surgery (P1), a trans-operative period of 6 hours (P2), an early postoperative period (P3, 18 hours), and a late postoperative period (P4, 24 hours). Urinary amino acid and nitrogen were analyzed from P1 through P4. Group I, nine patients, received Ringer’s lactate solution with 5% glucose, and Group II, another nine patients, received a 6.6% amino acid and 16.6% glucose solution over a 6-hour trans-operative period (P2) starting from the anesthesia procedures. All surgical procedures lasted a maximum of 3 hours. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in urinary amino acid or adrenaline excretion between P1 and P4 in either group. Nitrogen excretion values were also similar for both groups, i.e., 0.39 ± 0.16 and 0.39 ± 0.28 g/hour, respectively. The nitrogen balance showed greater nitrogen retention (﹣0.25 ± 0.24 g/hour) in the group receiving the amino acid infusion compared to the group receiving Ringer’s lactate solution (﹣0.59 ± 0.26 g/hour) (P < 0.05). Blood plasma urea nitrogen and glycaemia did not increase at the end of the study (P4 period) in either group. Conclusion: These data indicate that trans-operative infusion of glucose and amino acids can be beneficial for patients submitted to surgical stress in terms of nitrogen retention.

Effects of ozonated water as sanitizer method on mango was studied on total phenolics, flavonoids, carotenoids and vitamin C of pulp or peel. Mango cultivar “Palmer” was harvested and subjected to sanitization treatments by immersion in water, chlorinated water (10 minutes sodium hypochlorite 100 mg·L-1) or ozonated water for 10 and 20 minutes. After the sanitization process, the mangoes were stored at 15°C ± 1°C and 85% ± 5% RH for seven days, followed by 4 days of storage at room temperature (simulating the trading period), totaling 11 days after harvested. Mangoes pulp sanitized with ozonated water for 20 minutes showed the highest values of TA, total soluble carbohydrates, vitamin C, carotenoids and flavonoid content. These data suggest that the use of ozonated water may contribute to induce increase antioxidants compounds.

Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare ulcerative cutaneous disorder commonly associated with systemic diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases. This paper reports a case of pyoderma gangrenosum affecting the mouth and the skin associated with ulcerative colitis. A Medline search in English literature from 1961 to 2012 revealed only 11 documented cases of pyoderma gangrenosum with oral involvement. Previous reported cases of oral cavity involvement have shown that the most common sites of manifestation are the tongue, palate, and tonsillar fauces. This case emphasizes the importance of including inflammatory bowel diseases and their manifestations in the differential diagnosis of ulcerative lesions in the oral cavity.

Short-term outcomes after laparoscopic colorectal surgery in patients with previous abdominal surgery: A systematic review

AIM: To perform a systematic review focusing on shortterm outcomes after colorectal surgery in patients with previous abdominal open surgery(PAOS).METHODS: A broad literature search was performed with the terms "colorectal", "colectomy", "PAOS", "previous surgery" and "PAOS". Studies were included if their topic was laparoscopic colorectal surgery in patients with PAOS, whether descriptive or comparative. Endpoints of interest were conversion rates, inadvertent enterotomy and morbidity. Analysis of articles was made according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and ***: From a total of 394 citations, 13 full-texts achieved selection criteria to be included in the study. Twelve of them compared patients with and without PAOS. All studies were retrospective and comparative and two were case-matched. The selected studies comprised a total of 5005 patients, 1865 with PAOS. Among the later, only 294(16%) had history of a midline incision for previous gastrointestinal surgery. Conversion rates were significantly higher in 3 of 12 studies and inadvertent enterotomy during laparoscopywas more prevalent in 3 of 5 studies that disclosed this event. Morbidity was similar in the majority of studies. A quantitative analysis(meta-analysis) could not be performed due to heterogeneity of the studies. CONCLUSION: Conversion rates were slightly higher in PAOS groups, although not statistical significant in most studies. History of PAOS did not implicate in higher morbidity rates.

Euborellia annulipes Mortality and Predation on Diatraea saccharalis Eggs after Application of Chemical and Biological Insecticides

Chemical and biological insecticides have been frequently used in sugarcane fields to control insects-pests, including the sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis. Among the products used, those based on chlorantraniliprole and Metarhizium anisopliae entomopathogenic fungus, stand out. Euborellia annulipes is an insect of the order Dermaptera considered a potential predator of sugarcane borer eggs. This study aimed to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of the bioinsecticide based on M. anisopliae (Metarril®) and the chemical insecticide chlorantraniliprole (Altacor®) on the mortality of E. annulipes nymphs and adults, the predation and feeding preference of earwigs in eggs treated with the formulated products. Predator mortality was evaluated for seven days after treatment, while the effect on predation was analyzed by preference tests with and without choice, using prey eggs. The products tested were selective to the predator, causing ≤ 2% mortality and not affecting predation. The application of M. anisopliae on sugarcane borer eggs favored the food preference of fourth-instar nymphs, males, and females of the predator. Our results show that Metarril® and Altacor® can be used to control D. saccharalis when associated with the predator E. annulipes.

Oral Manifestations, Gingival Index and Dental State of Vesiculobullous Diseases

Objective: To determine the occurrence of oral manifestations, gingival index, dental state and associated therapeutic aspects in patients with vesiculobullous diseases. Study design: Prospective and observational study conducted with 69 patients from May 2013 to May 2014 at the Dermatology Outpatient Clinic of the Clinical Hospital, University of São paulo Medical School, Brazil. Data were analyzed for frequency in absolute values, percentage and correlation using the Chi-square test. Results: 84.1% of the patients had oral manifestations of vesiculobullous diseases (p = 0.001);25% had gingival lesions;18.2% had lesions in the buccal mucosa, and 17.6% in the lips, with no correlation between the location and the type of disease (p = 0.990). Among all patients with bullous pemphigoid, linear IgA dermatosis, and mucous membrane pemphigoid, 59 (93.6%) patients had gingival inflammation of dental origin but without significant correlation (p = 0.42). There was correlation between pemphigus vulgaris and periodontal disease (p = 0.05). Conclusion: Gingival inflammation seems to interfere negatively with the clinical course of these diseases. Further studies should be conducted to better clarify the interrelations between dental and gingival state, and between vesiculobullous diseases and oral involvement.

This study hypothesized that different land-use affect the microbial enzymatic stoichiometry and C-,N-,and P-acquisition in Brazilian semiarid ***,the enzymesβ-glucosidase(C-acquiring enzyme),urease(N-acquiring enzyme),and acid phosphatase(P-acquiring enzyme)were assessed in soil samples collected at 0−5 and 5−10 cm depth from a tropical dry forest,a protected area with Angico,a protected area with Ipê,scrub area,and an agricultural area with *** values of C-,N-,and P-acquiring enzymes were used to calculate the enzymatic C:N,C:P,and N:P *** values of C:P and N:P ratios were higher at 0−5 cm depth,while no significant variation,between soil depth,was observed for C:N *** values of C-and N-acquiring enzymes were higher at 0−5 cm in tropical dry forest areas and Angico forest,*** all land use types,the values of vectors L and A were higher than 1°and 45°,*** study showed that both land-use and soil depth influence the enzymatic stoichiometry,showing higher values of C-and N-acquiring enzymes in native and protected forests at soil surface.
