Cultivation of Perennial Herbaceous Legumes in Weed Management in Coffee Plantation on the Cerrado

The aim of this study was to evaluate the cultivation of perennial herbaceous legumes on weed control and yield of the coffee crop in the Cerrado. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications. The 10 treatments tested in factorial 4 × 2 ＋ 2, were four legumes： forage peanut （Arachis pintoi）, hybrid Java （Macrotyloma axillare）, perennial soybean （Neonotonia wightii） and wild ground nut （Calopogonium mucunoides）; two forms in the interrows of coffee plants with two and three rows of legumes spaced by 0.50 m and 0.25 m, respectively; and two additional treatments consisted of hand weeding with hoe and chemical control with glyphosate. The hybrid Java and wild ground nut in the first year and the hybrid Java and perennial soybean in the second year, all followed by forage peanut, promoted lower density and biomass of the weeds. The wild ground nut in the first year and forage peanut in the second year showed higher soil cover. The hybrid Java had its highest biomass production in two years, and wild ground nut being higher in the first year. The cultivation of perennial herbaceous legumes promoted weed control without interfering in the productivity of the coffee crop.

The PIRATA-SWE （Prediction and Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic-Southwest Extension） was conceived in the early 2000s to gather observations necessary to improve the understanding of the variability of ocean-atmosphere interactions in the SACZ （South Atlantic Convergence Zone）, which are believed to influence South American climate. To properly monitor the SACZ, the preliminary design for the PIRATA-SWE array considered the mooring of four buoys, with the southernmost one in the sub-tropics. In 2005, three buoys were deployed in the tropical region. Four years later, in 2009, efforts were started to assemble and deploy a Brazilian prototype of the TAO/PIRATA Atlas （autonomous temperature line acquisition system） buoy-the Atlas-B. Finally, in April 2013 the first Atlas-B, nicknamed ＂Guariroba＂, was moored for a testing period at 28.5° S, 44° W, which is the site originally planned for the fourth PIRATA-SWE buoy. In early November 2013, after being detected adrift, the buoy with the upper 700 m part of the mooring line was rescued in an emergency operation. In June 2014, the bottom part was successfully recovered. A new deployment is planned for late 2014. This paper describes part of the learning process of adapting and building the Atlas-B buoy and presents a brief discussion of the data collected during the pilot deployment.

Influence of Global Solar Radiation on Indoor Environment： Experimental Study of Internal Temperature Distribution in Two Test Cells with Different Roof Systems

This work is part of a large experimental study on the distribution of internal temperatures in two similar test cells, but with different systems of coverage. The main goal of this paper is to present results on an experimental field to determine the influence of solar radiation on the internal environmental conditions of different roof systems. Dry bulb temperature and internal surface temperatures were measured in two test cells with different roof systems （green roof and conventional ceramic roof）. Their thermal performances were compared on days with differing air mass domain, based on dynamic climatic approach. This research was based on the spatial and temporal approaches of dynamic climatology, from the climatic regime of the city of Itirapina, S^o paulo State, analysed as representative episodes. Climatic data were provided by an automatic weather station and verified by satellite imagery, and the internal temperatures of the cells were collected by thermocouples installed on the surfaces of ceilings, floors, walls, and suspended inside the buildings. The results indicate that the solar radiation is mainly responsible for the great variations in temperature and its impact on indoor environments, since there were great differences in temperature inside comparing the two days of the experiment. This refutes the notion that the outside temperature is responsible for daily variations in temperature inside buildings.

Comparison of thermal performance between test cells with different coverage systems for experimental typical day of heat in Brazilian Southeastern

This article shows experimentally the thermal performance of two test cells with different coverage systems, Ught Green Roof （LGR） and ceramic roof by analyzing internal surface temperatures （IST） in the ceiling and dry bulb temperatures （DBT）. The objective was to evaluate the spatial distnbution of temperatures in buildings according to spatial and temporal Dynamic CUmato[ogy approaches. An experimental, typical day for heat conditions was determined. The data of the main climatic vari- ables provided by an automatic weather station and temperatures inside the test cells were collected using thermocouples installed such that the entire space is included. The results led to the conclusion that the LGR has a balanced IST and DBT spatial distribution compared with ceramic roofs. Nevertheless, the analysis of the thermal performance is only one of the variables that must be considered when developing a construction proposal that is adapted to the context. The manner in which the thermocouples were placecl inside the test cells also showed the importance of specifying the location of the sensors in experimental studies on the behavior and thermal performance of buildings.

Risk of Surgical Site Infection in Patients Undergoing Total Knee Arthroplasty

The aim of this study was to determine the participation of risk factors in the infection in patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty. This is a prospective longitudinal study, descriptive and analytical, that was carried out between January 2013 and december 2015. Eighty-one procedures were performed in 78 individuals, 16 males and 62 females. Three subjects underwent the procedure on both knees. The following predictive factors of infection were identified: Age, gender, comorbidities, evaluation of functional physical status using the American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status Classification System (ASAPS), length of hospital stay, use of prophylactic antibiotics and duration of surgery. The data was tabulated in a database using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. For statistical analysis, the chi-square test, chi-square test for independence and Fischer’s exact test were applied, all at a significance level of 5% (0.05). Surgical site infection was more prevalent in males (23.5%), age over 70 years (25.0%), for left gonarthrosis (17.9%), in the presence of comorbidities (17.9%), when hospital stay was 6 or more days (27.8%), in total arthroplasties of left knee (17,9%), in surgical times of up to 2 hours (20%), in the use of prophylactic antibiotics (16.7%) and in level II classification in the ASAPS (18.8%). The independence test was not significant in any of the evaluated factors (p-value greater than 0.05). The most prevalent bacteria identified in cases of infection was Staphylococcus aureus (33.2%). The risk factors studied were not statistically significant.

Self-Assembled dextrin Nanogel as Curcumin delivery System

Curcumin is a natural polyphenol with anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Its therapeutic potential is substantially hindered by the rather low water solubility and bioavailability, hence the need for suitable carriers. In this study, we show that self-assembled nanogels obtained from hydrophobically modified dextrin are effective curcumin nanocarriers. The stability and loading efficiency of curcumin-loaded nanogel depends on the nanogel/curcumin ratio. Higher stability of the formulation is achieved in water than in PBS buffer, as evaluated by dynamic light scattering and fluorescence measurements. The in vitro release profile, using sink conditions, indicates that dextrin nanogel may perform as a suitable carrier for the controlled release of curcumin. Biological activity of curcumin-loaded nanogel in HeLa cell cultures was assessed using the MTS assay.

Shrinking lung refers to a rare complication of systemic lupus erythematosus and is characterized by unexplained dyspnea, a restrictive pattern in lung function tests, and elevation of the diaphragmatic hemicuples. It is postulated to have a predilection for female involvement and occurs mainly during late stages of the disease. Chest X-rays usually show small, diaphragmatic lungs. Occasional basal atelectasis may be present. Chest tomography usually shows reduced lung volumes with diaphragmatic elevation, occasional basal atelectasis, without severe pulmonary or pleuropulmonary disease. Shrinking lung can cause significant morbidity and occasional mortality. There is no definitive therapy, while corticosteroids may decrease symptoms and improve lung function in some patients. The objective of this study was to describe the main imaging findings in Shrinking Lung, an important pulmonary alteration in lupus patients. We highlight the characteristics observed on radiography and computed tomography, with an emphasis on computed tomography. It is important that every radiologist is prepared to recognize these findings and understand the possible clinical repercussions.

Emergent Macrophytes Alter the Sediment Composition in a Small, Shallow Subtropical Lake: Implications for Methane Emission

Aquatic macrophytes in shallow lakes emit high levels of methane. We hypothesize that the presence of emergent aquatic macrophytes in an artificial shallow lake promotes important input of autochthonous organic matter (OM) in sediment and higher levels of methane emission via bubbles. Samplings were performed at three sites in a small, shallow subtropical lake: (1) one station in the limnetic region and (2) - (3) two stations in the littoral region ((2) inside and (3) outside aquatic macrophyte stands). A higher concentration of OM was observed at the macrophyte station, and within this site, a higher methane concentration was observed in the sediment. These results could explain the methane ebullition values at macrophyte sites. At the macrophyte station, methane emission via bubbles contributed 17% to 56% of the total methane emission;however, at the other stations, its contribution via bubbles, was lower than 1%. This research confirmed the importance of emergent macrophytes at Polegar Lake as a source of OM in sediment and methane emission via bubbles. Further, we could confirm the positive effects of temperature on methane emission, mainly by bubbles.

COVID-19 and Gestational Diabetes: A Systematic Review

In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared a pandemic state in response to the number of infected and killed by COVID-19. Gestational diabetes (GD) is characterized by physiological changes making pregnant women even more vulnerable to viral respiratory infections, such as SARS-CoV-2. For these reasons and due to the restriction of data related to DMG and the involvement by COVID-19, the importance of raising information about these two conditions is evident. Therefore, this study aimed to perform a literature review about the complications of COVID-19 in patients with GD. MEDLINE-PubMed, EMBASE, and Scielo databases were searched and followed the PRISMA guidelines. Only four studies were included in the systematic review. The complications and mortality are more significant in pregnant women with diabetes since hyperglycemia promotes immune changes in the inflammatory state and worsens insulin resistance. The imbalance in the immune response favors the development of infections, the most likely being viral respiratory infections. On the other hand, other studies show insufficient recent evidence to indicate that pregnant women are more susceptible to infection with severe acute coronavirus respiratory syndrome. There are divergences between studies concerning complications related to COVID-19 in patients with GD. In view of this scenario and from the information obtained, it is noted that the literature is scarce regarding the worsening of COVID-19 in patients with GD. Therefore, it is necessary to continue research on these mechanisms that may justify their correlation.

Spatial Distribution of Internal Temperatures in a LGR （Light Green Roof） for Brazilian Tropical Weather

This article aims to assess the spatial distribution of the IST （internal surface temperatures） in the ceiling and DBT （dry bulb temperatures） of a LGR （light green roof） in a test cell. Cover systems known as green roofs have the potential to retain rainwater and help reduce runoff. However, the characteristic considered in this work is the insulation capacity of this kind of coverage. To evaluate the spatial distribution of temperatures in an environment with light green roof, we proposed a new method for acquisition of series of climatological data and temperatures according to spatial and temporal approaches of dynamic climatology. Climatological data were provided by an automatic weather station and temperatures were collected in a test cell with light green roof. The spatial distribution of surface temperatures and internal air temperature （DBT） are based on the concepts of a climatic episode and typical experimental day from the study of the dynamic climatology. The results led to the conclusion that the light green roof has a balanced spatial distribution of the IST and of the internal air temperature （DBT）, i.e., without substantial variations over the day. The new methodology also showed the importance of specifying the location of the sensors and automatic weather station in experimental studies on the thermal behaviour of buildings.
