Growth trends and environmental drivers of major tree species of the northern hardwood forest of eastern North America

The future health and productivity of tree species in the northern hardwood forest of eastern North America are uncertain considering changes in climate and pollution loading *** better understand the trajectory of the northern hardwood forest,we studied the growth of three tree species emblematic of it:sugar maple(Acer saccharum Marsh),American beech(fagus grandifolia Ehrh.),and yellow birch(Betula alleghaniensis Britton),plus a fourth species,red maple(Acer rubrum L.),whose abundance has increased in the *** also analyzed the link between growth and several factors for690 trees in 45 plots throughout Vermont,USA:tree age and size,site elevation,and climate and acid deposition *** their chronologies(1945-2014),all four species exhibited increasing growth followed by plateaued growth indicative of a maturing *** all species,summer moisture was positively correlated with growth,summer temperature was negatively associated with growth,and winter moisture or snow were positively correlated with *** last association was expected for sugar ***,our data suggest that winter snowpack may be more broadly relevant in sustaining tree growth in a region where snow has historically insulated the soil from freezing that can damage roots and lead to reduced aboveground *** of pollution deposition were also correlated with growth for all species except American beech—a species with documented tolerance to pollutant *** the four species studied,red maple had the fewest associations with environmental variables,which suggests that it may be less susceptible to growth reductions as the climate changes.

Long-term survival after liver transplantation for alcoholic liver disease

Currently,alcoholic cirrhosis is the second leading indication for liver transplantation in the United States and *** quality of life and survival after a liver transplantation(LT)in patients with alcoholic liver disease(ALD)are similar to those in patients with other cirrhosis *** alcoholic relapse rate after a LT varies from 10%-50%,and these relapse patients are the ones who present a reduced long-term survival,mainly due to cardiovascular diseases and the onset of de novo neoplasms,including lung and upper aerodigestive *** 40%of ALD recipients resume smoking and resume it early ***,our pre-and post-LT follow-up efforts regarding ALD should be focused not only on alcoholic relapse but also on treating and avoiding other modifiable risk factors such as *** psychiatric and psychosocial pre-LT evaluation and the post-LT follow-up with physicians,psychiatrists and addiction specialists are important for reversing these problems because these professionals help to identify patients at risk for relapse as well as those patients who have relapsed,thus enabling responsive actions.

Utilization of novel materials,particularly high-T_(c)(critical temperature)superconductors,is essential to pursue the United Nations’Sustainable Goals,as well as to meet the increasing worldwide demand for clean and carbon-free electric power *** magnets are beneficial in several real-life applications including transportation,energy production,magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),and drug delivery *** achieve high performance,one must develop uniform,large-grain,infiltration-growth(IG)processed bulk YBa_(2)Cu_(3)O_(y)(Y-123)*** this study,we report the magnetic and microstructural properties of a large-grain,top-seeded,IG-processed Y-123 pellet,which is 20 mm in diameter and 6 mm in height;the pellet is produced utilizing liquid Yb-123+Ba_(3)Cu_(5)O_(8) as the liquid *** the samples cut from the top of the bulk exhibit a sharp superconducting transition(approximately 1 K wide)with the onset T_(c) of approximately 90 ***,in the samples cut from the bottom surface,the onset T_(c) values slightly decreased to between 88 and 90 K,although still exhibiting a sharp superconducting *** top and bottom samples exhibited the highest remnant value of J_(c)(critical current density)at 77 K H//c-axis of 50 and 55 kA/cm^(2),*** remnant J_(c) and irreversibility field values significantly fluctuated,being fairly low in some bottom *** electron microscopy identified nanometer size Y-211(Y2BaCuO5)secondary-phase particles dispersed in the Y-123 ***-dispersive spectroscopy clarified that the decreased both T_(c) and J_(c) for the bottom samples were attributed to liquid phase dispersion within the Y-123 phase.

The spin-up time TA in the spin-up process and spin-down time TD in the spin-down process of rotational air flow in the cylindrical vortex chamber with three kinds of the artificial surface roughness were investigated. One of the most different characteristics between the smooth and rough surface conditions was the spin-down time TD. Also the transient response of the tangential velocity on the spin-up process was analyzed numerically and this result was compared with the experimental results. The above stated results are reported here in detail.

Counter-Rotating Type Pump-Turbine Unit Cooperating with Wind Power Unit

This serial research proposes the hybrid power system combined the wind power unit with the counter-rotating type pump-turbine unit,to provide the constant output for the grid system,even at the suddenly fluctuating/turbulent *** this paper,the tandem impellers of the counter-rotating type pumping unit was operated at the turbine mode,and the performances and the flow conditions were investigated numerically and *** 3-D turbulent flows in the runners were simulated at the steady state condition by using the commercial CfD code of ANSYS-CfX ver.12 with the SST turbulence *** providing the pump unit for the turbine mode,the maximum hydraulic efficiency is close to one of the counter-rotating type hydroelectric unit designed exclu-sively for the turbine ***,the runner/impeller of the unit works evidently so as to coincide the angularmomentum change through the front runners/impellers with that through the rear runners/impellers,namely to take the axial flow at not only the inlet but also the outlet without the guide *** results show that this type of unit is effective to work at not only the pumping but also the turbine modes.

E2f transcription factors(Tf)comprise a family of proteins that regulate the expression of genes required for S-phase progression,among *** genome encodes six E2f Tfs(E2fA–f),which are classified as typical(E2fA–C)and atypical(E2fD–f)depending on their ability to interact with two DP interaction proteins(DPa and DPb)(Sablowski and Gutierrez,2022).While E2fA–C need to heterodimerize with either DPa or DPb to function,E2fD–f act independently of DP ***,the retinoblastoma-related1(RBR1)protein also binds and inhibits the typical E2f/DP Tf complexes when bound to the promoter of genes,repressing their expression in the absence of a signal to enter a new cell *** general,E2fA and E2fB are considered transcriptional activators,while E2fC is generally considered a repressor of cell proliferation(Sablowski and Gutierrez,2022).In addition,it is well documented that E2fB at least,and probably E2fA,can also stimulate the G2/M transition.

3D City Models as a Visual Support Tool for the Analysis of Buildings Seismic Vulnerability: The Case of Lisbon

3D city models associate a database of a city to a rigorous geospatial representation that is close to the visible reality by combining appearance, geometry, and semantics. As such, these models may include tools that convey attribute analysis, not only at the statistical level but also in terms of visual appearance of the objects, thus allowing the generation of new knowledge about a phenomenon or its effects. Lisbon is a city with a moderate level of seismic risk, and has been hit in the past by strong earthquakes. Several seismic vulnerability studies of buildings have been carried out in Lisbon. These studies generate different scenarios that consider the magnitude and source location of potential earthquakes. The results of these studies were presented as maps obtained from crossing information contained in 2D layers and presented in a GIS environment. In the present study a seismic vulnerability assessment of Lisbon's buildings held in 2D is extended to the third dimension, which refines the resolution and the set of parameters and explores the gains of spatial analysis in 3D representations. The numerous parameters that contribute to assess seismic vulnerability of buildings may be analyzed individually or simultaneously as well as in multiple seismic scenarios. Although covering all residential buildings in Lisbon, the application of the 3Dcity model is demonstrated with more detail in three pilot areas.

forecasting patient demand at urgent care clinics using explainable machine learning

Urgent care clinics and emergency departments around the world periodically suffer from extended wait times beyond patient expectations due to surges in patient *** delays arising from inadequate staffing levels during these periods have been linked with adverse clinical *** research into forecasting patient flows has mostly used statistical *** studies have also predominately focussed on short‐term forecasts,which have limited practicality for the resourcing of medical *** study joins an emerging body of work which seeks to explore the potential of machine learning algorithms to generate accurate forecasts of patient *** research uses datasets covering 10 years from two large urgent care clinics to develop long‐term patient flow forecasts up to one quarter ahead using a range of state‐of‐the‐art algo-rithms.A distinctive feature of this study is the use of eXplainable Artificial Intelligence(XAI)tools like Shapely and LIME that enable an in‐depth analysis of the behaviour of the models,which would otherwise be *** analysis tools enabled us to explore the ability of the models to adapt to the volatility in patient demand during the COVID‐19 pandemic lockdowns and to identify the most impactful variables,resulting in valuable insights into their *** results showed that a novel combination of advanced univariate models like Prophet as well as gradient boosting,into an ensemble,delivered the most accurate and consistent solutions on *** approach generated improvements in the range of 16%-30%over the existing in‐house methods for esti-mating the daily patient flows 90 days ahead.
