Simulation and Visualisation of Functional Landscapes:Effects of the Water Resource Competition Between Plants

Vegetation ecosystem simulation and visualisation are challenging topics involving multidisciplinary aspects. In this paper, we present a new generic frame for the simulation of natural phenomena through manageable and interacting models. It focuses on the functional growth of large vegetal ecosystems, showing coherence for scales ranging from the individual plant to communities and with a particular attention to the effects of water resource competition between plants. The proposed approach is based on a model of plant growth in interaction with the environmental conditions. These are deduced from the climatic data （light, temperature, rainfall） and a model of soil hydrological budget. A set of layers is used to store the water resources and to build the interfaces between the environmental data and landscape components： temperature, rain, light, altitude, lakes, plant positions, biomass, cycles, etc. At the plant level, the simulation is performed for each individual by a structural-functional growth model, interacting with the plant＇s environment. Temperature is spatialised, changing according to altitude, and thus locally controls plant growth speed. The competition for water is based on a soil hydrological model taking into account rainfalls, water runoff, absorption, diffusion, percolation in soil. So far, the incoming light radiation is not studied in detail and is supposed constant. However, competition for light between plants is directly taken into account in the plant growth model. In our implementation, we propose a simple architecture for such a simulator and a simulation scheme to synchronise the water resource updating （on a temporal basis） and the plant growth cycles （determined by the sum of daily temperatures）. The visualisation techniques are based on sets of layers, allowing both morphological and functional landscape views and providing interesting tools for ecosystem management. Emerging insights into the function of very long chain fatty acids at cerebellar synapses

Very long chain-saturated and-polyunsaturated fatty acids(VLC-SFA and VLC-PUFA, respectively) are a functionally important class of fatty acids containing 28 carbons or more in their acyl chain. They are synthesized by the elongation of very long fatty acids-4(ELOVL4) enzyme, expressed mainly in the brain, retina, skin, testes, and meibomian gland, where these fatty acids are found(Agbaga et al., 2008). Further, these organs exhibit tissuespecific VLC-PUFA and VLC-SFA biosynthesis and incorporation into complex lipids for specific functions. In the brain, skin, and Meibomian glands, the ELOVL4 mainly makes VLC-SFA, which are incorporated into complex sphingolipids. In the retina, the ELOVL4 makes VLC-PUFA that are incorporated into phosphatidylcholine, that are critical for visual function, while in testes and sperm, the VLC-PUFA are incorporated into sphingolipids that are critical for fertility(Yeboah et al., 2021).

Fish constitutes the main protein source for the Amazonian ***,the impact of different anthropogenic activities on trace element and metal accumulation in fish and their risks for human health at a regional scale remain largely *** we assessed exposure levels of 10 trace elements andmetals(Cr,Mn,Fe,Ni,Cu,Zn,As,Cd,Pb,and Hg)in 56 samples belonging to 11 different species of fish from the Brazilian *** studied the relationship between exposure levels,fish origin,and fish feeding habits,and assessed toxicological and carcinogenic risks for the Amazonian *** significant correlation was found between sampling site and exposure levels to the studied elements,but a significant difference was found between the accumulation of some metals and the position of the fish species in the food *** concentrations of Cr and Hg in fish flesh were found to exceed the Brazilian limits for human *** study shows that current fish consumption patterns can lead to estimated daily intakes of Hg,As and Cr that exceed the oral reference dose,thus posing a toxicological ***,carcinogenic risks may be expected due to the continued exposure to Cr and *** results of this study show that the consumption of wild caught fish in the Amazon region should be ***,continued monitoring of trace element and metal contamination in fish and on the health of the Amazonian population is recommended,particularly for riverine and indigenous communities.

Outcomes of a non-diffractive extended depth of focus intraocular lens in patients with well-controlled glaucoma and ocular hypertension

A weak formulation of heterogenous viscoacoustic wave propagation in infinite domain

The accurate simulation of wave propagation in real media requires properly taking the attenuation into account,which leads to wave dissipation together with its causal companion,wave *** this study,to obtain a weak formulation of heterogenous viscoacoustic wave propagation in an infinite domain,the viscoacoustic medium is first characterized by its frequency-dependent complex bulk compliance instead of the classically used complex bulk ***,a mechanical model using serially connected standard linear solids(SSLS)is built to obtain the rational approximation of the complex bulk compliance whose parameters are calculated via an adapted nonlinear optimization *** the obtained bulk compliance-based constitutive relation,a novel second-order viscoacoustic wave equation in the frequency domain is derived,of which the weak formulation can be physically explained as the virtual work equation and can thus be discretized using a continuous spectral element method in ***,a new method is introduced to address the convolution terms involved in the inverse Fourier transform,whose accurate time integration can then be achieved using an explicit time scheme,which avoids the transient growth that exists in the classical *** resulting full time-space decoupling scheme can handle wave propagation in arbitrary heterogeneous ***,to treat the wave propagation in an infinite domain,a perfectly matched layer in weak formulation is derived for the truncation of the infinite domain via complex coordinate stretching of the virtual work *** only minor modification,the resulting perfectly matched layer can be implemented using the same time scheme as for the wave equation inside the truncated *** accuracy,numerical stability,and versatility of the new proposed scheme are demonstrated with numerical examples.

Burden of Chronic Low Back Pain in Low and Middle-Income Settings: Case of the Yaounde Central Hospital, Cameroon

Background: Chronic low back pain is a leading cause of morbidity and disability globally. Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) tend to be more affected, with chronic low back pain (CLBP) being among the leading presenting complaints at specialist consultation. The exact burden of this disease is sparingly known in our setting. Objective: To evaluate the burden of chronic low back pain at the Yaounde Central Hospital. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study for a period of 3 months, from March 2022 to May 2022. After obtaining ethical clearance and research authorisations, data was collected using structured questionnaires from patients with chronic low back pain presenting at the Yaounde Central Hospital during the aforementioned time frame. This data was then tabulated with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 23.0), and disability was assessed using the modified Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire and the Oswestry Disability Index. Data analysis was done using the International Business Machines Statistical Package for Social Sciences (IBM-SPSS) VERSION 23.0. Results: 115 cases of CLBP were included. The mean age was 52.62 years, and the sex ratio was 0.3. The average monthly income was less than 50,000 frs CFA, in 37.4% of cases. In 57.9%, patients had a job that involved physical labour. The patients had a secondary level of education in 40.9%, and alcohol consumption was observed in 36%. The average number of days of a work stoppage due to LBP was 12.75 days (±12SD), and the median duration of CLBP was 7.15 (7.5SD) years. The median pain intensity was 7 (±2SD), with leg pain and sensory neuropathy observed in 67.8% and 63.5% respectively. Lumbar X-ray was done in 45.2% and revealed lumbar osteoarthrosis in 62.4%. Hypertension as a comorbidity was observed in 26.1%. Medical treatment was used at least once in 98.3% of cases. The average cost of management per month was assessed, and the median was 52,000 FCFA (±20,876 SD). Using

Advancements in proteogenomics for preclinical targeted cancer therapy research

Advancements in molecular characterization technologies have accelerated targeted cancer therapy research at unprecedented resolution and dimensionality. Integrating comprehensive multi-omic molecular profiling of a tumor, proteogenomics, marks a transformative milestone for preclinical cancer research. In this paper, we initially provided an overview of proteogenomics in cancer research, spanning genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. Subsequently, the applications were introduced and examined from different perspectives, including but not limited to genetic alterations, molecular quantifications, single-cell patterns, different post-translational modification levels, subtype signatures, and immune landscape. We also paid attention to the combined multi-omics data analysis and pan-cancer analysis. This paper highlights the crucial role of proteogenomics in preclinical targeted cancer therapy research, including but not limited to elucidating the mechanisms of tumorigenesis, discovering effective therapeutic targets and promising biomarkers, and developing subtype-specific therapies.
