Surface-active polym.rs are of substantial im.ortance in m.ny diverse aspects of m.dern technology, with applications ranging from.solid phase chem.cal synthesis related to drug discovery and chem.cal catalysis to biocom.atible/bioactive m.dical im.lants and prostheses, and to surface-m.dified fabrics. Whilst there are a num.er of existing physical (e. g. corona or plasm. discharge, ion beam.irradiation[1] ) and chem.cal (e. ***, oxidation, chlorination, acylation and quaternisation[2-4]) m.thods for the surface m.dification of polym.rs, the frequent requirem.nt for significant infrastructure, harsh reaction conditions, and lim.tation to specific polym.r types (e. g. polybutadiene[5] ), which m.st possess suitable chem.cal functionality capable of direct m.dification, led us to consider alternative chem.cal m.thods. Desirable was an alternative that would be am.nable to a large range of polym.rs, perm.tting direct chem.cal m.dification under m.ld conditions and using inexpensive reagents.

Singlet Oxygen Generation and Photoinduced Charge Separation of Tetra Polyethyleneglycol Functionalized Zinc Phthalocyanine-Fullerene Dyad

Utilization of polyethyleneglycol （PEG） functionalized zinc phthalocyanine, （PEG）4ZnPc in （i） singlet oxygen generation, and （ii） in building energy harvesting donor-acceptor system. using fullerene, C60 as an acceptor via the well-known m.tal-ligand axial coordination approach is reported. The （PEG）4ZnPe was found to be capable of producing singlet oxygen with a quantum.yield, ooa of 0.77 in toluene, a value higher than that obtained for pristine （t-bu）4ZnPc （φ△=0.54） carrying no PEG groups, revealing its usefulness in photodynam.c therapy applications. Spectroscopic studies revealed efficient binding of phenylim.dazole functionalized fullerene, C60 Im.with l ： 1 stoichiom.try to （PEG）4ZnPc. Binding constant K for the form.tion of （PEG）4ZnPc：Im.60 dyad was found to be 6 × 103 m.1 revealing m.derate stability. Geom.tric and electronic studies of the dyad was arrived by B3LYP/3-21G（＊） m.thod. The HOm. level was found to be on zinc phthalocyanine entity while the LUm. level was found to be on the C60 entity suggesting form.tion of （PEG）4ZnPc＊＋：Im.60＊ charge separated state during the process of electron transfer reaction. Redox studies on the （PEG）4ZnPc：Im.60 dyad enabled accurate determ.nation of the oxidation and reduction potentials of the donor-acceptor system. and to evaluate free-energy changes associated for the charge separation process. Kinetics of photoinduced charge separation and recom.ination in the （PEG）4ZnPc：Im.60 dyad was investigated using fem.osecond transient absorption studies. Relatively long-lived charge separated states were confirm.d for the dyad suggesting their potential usefulness in energy harvesting applications.

Em.loying the angle-resolved photoem.ssion spectroscopy, we study the electronic structure of taFe1.23Te3, a two-leg spin ladder com.ound with a novel antiferrom.gnetic ground state. Quasi-two-dim.nsional （2D） Ferm. surface is observed, with sizable inter-ladder hopping. m.reover, instead of observing an energy gap at the Ferm. surface in the antiferrom.gnetic state, we observe the shifts of various bands. Com.ining these observations with density-functional-theory calculations, we propose that the large scale reconstruction of the electronic structure, caused by the interactions between the coexisting itinerant electrons and local m.m.nts, is m.st likely the driving force of the m.gnetic transition. Thus taFe1.23Te3 serves as a sim.ler platform.that contains sim.lar ingredients to the parent com.ounds of iron-based superconductors.

Geochem.cal characteristics and origin of the Neoproterozoic high-K calc-alkaline granitoids in the northern part of m.ndara hills,northeastern Nigeria

The high-K calc-alkaline granitoids in the northern part of the m.ndara Hills are part of the wellexposed post-collisional plutons in northeastern *** calc-alkaline rock association consists of quartz m.nzodiorite,hornblende biotite granite,biotite granites and aplite which intruded the older basem.nt consisting m.inly of low-lying m.gm.titic gneisses and am.hibolites during the Neoproterozoic Pan-African *** and geochem.cal studies have revealed the presence of hornblende,iron oxide,and m.talum.nous to slightly peralum.nous characteristics in the granitoids which is typical of I-type *** granitoids are also depleted in som. high field strength elem.nts(*** and ta) as well as *** of m.#versus SiO2 indicate that the granite was derived from.partial m.lting of crustal *** delam.nation at the waning stage of the PanAfrican Orogeny possibly triggered upwelling of hot m.fic m.gm. from.the m.ntle which underplated the lower ***,in turn,caused partial m.lting and m.gm. generation at the lower to m.ddle-crustal ***,the peculiar geochem.cal characteristics of the quartz m.nzodiorite especially the enrichm.nt in com.atible elem.nts such as m.O,Cr,and Ni,as well as LILE elem.nt(e.g.K,Ce,Cs,Ba,and Sr),signify that the rock form.d from.an enriched upper m.ntle *** em.lacem.nt of high-K granites in the m.dara Hill,therefore,m.rked an im.ortant episode of crustal reworking during the ***,further isotopic work is needed to confirm.this m.del.

Background and Aim.:In the REALm.(Random.zed, Obser-vational Study of Entecavir to Assess Long-Term.Outcom.s Associated with Nucleoside/Nucleotide m.notherapy for Pa-tients with Chronic HBV Infection) study, 12,378 patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection received up to 10 years of random.zed therapy with entecavir or another HBV nucleos(t)ide analogue. m.nitored clinical outcom. events (COEs) included m.lignant neoplasm., HBV disease progres-sion events, and deaths. An external event adjudication com.m.ttee (EAC) was convened to provide real-tim. review of reported COEs to optim.ze data quality, and m.nim.ze poten-tial adverse effects of the large cohort, interdisciplinary out-com. assessm.nts, geographic scope, and long duration. m.thods:The EAC com.rised an international group of hep-atologists and oncologists with expertise in diagnosis of tar-geted COEs. The EAC reviewed and adjudicated COEs according to prospectively defined diagnostic criteria cap-tured in the EAC charter. Operational processes, including da-ta collection and query procedures, were im.lem.nted to optim.ze efficiency of data recovery to m.xim.ze capture of adjudicated COEs, the prim.ry study outcom. m.asure. Results: A total of 1724 COEs were reported and 1465 of these events were adjudicated by the EAC as reported by the investigators (85.0% overall concordance). Concordance by COE type varied: deaths, 99.6%;hepatocellular carcino-m. (HCC), 83.3%;non-HCC m.lignancies, 88.0%;non-HCC HBV disease progression, 68.2%. Reasons for lack of con-cordance were m.st com.only lack of adequate supporting data to support an adjudicated diagnosis or evidence that the event pre-dated the study. Conclusions: The REALm.EAC perform.d a critical role in ensuring data quality and consis-tency;EAC perform.nce was facilitated by well-defined diag-nostic criteria, effective data capture, and efficient operational processes.
