Simulation of industrial particle flows using DEM （Discrete Element Method） offers the opportunity for better understanding of the flow dynamics by the inclusion of particle scale physics that often determine the nature of these flows. Increased understanding from the models can lead to improvements in equip- ment design and operation, potentially leading to large increases in equipment and process efficiency, throughput and]or product quality. Industrial applications are typically large and involve complex par- ticulate behaviour in complex geometries. This paper explores the critical influence of particle shape on granular system behaviour and then discusses examples of DEM applied to several large industrial problems. 2009 Chinese Society of Particuology and Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The management of a combination of fracture and multiligament knee inj.ry(MKI) in traumatic knee inj.ry remains controversial, and there are evolving treatment recommendations. Currently, there are no studies focusing on older adult patients with MKI's in combination with tibia fractures. As a result, there is no well-established treatment algorithm for older adult patients with these complex inj.ries. We report two cases of MKI's with concomitant fractures in patients fifty years of age or older. Both patients were treated surgically for their associated tibial plateau fractures, but were managed with conservative treatment of the multiligamentous knee inj.ries. We also provide a review of the literature and guidelines for older adult patients with these types of complex traumatic inj.ries. Early to mid term acceptable outcomes were achieved for both patients through surgical fixation of the tibial plateau fracture and conservative treatment of the ligament inj.ries. We propose a comprehensive treatment algorithm for management of these complex inj.ries.

The surface topography of acetabular implants plays a key role in providing cell attachment and *** measurement and characterisation of the surface texture of the cellular scaffold layer on the acetabular cup are very difficult due to the 3D nature of scaffold *** is proposed to use X-ray computed tomography(XCT)to measure the surface texture of an electron beam melting-produced titanium acetabular *** surface texture of its cellular scaffold is evaluated using the newly developed 3D surface texture parameters,which allows surface characterisation on 3D triangular mesh *** commonly used height parameters,*** arithmetical mean height Sa,the root mean square height Sq,the skewness Ssk and the kurtosis Sku,are calculated from surface patches extracted from the XCT scanned triangular mesh *** addition,the surface peak density and pit density,which are more related to cell communication and proliferation,are estimated based on the 3D watershed *** Wolf pruning with an empirical threshold 12μm is used to control the over-segmentation.

Palladium nanoparticles immobilized on a cross-linked imidazolium-containing polymer were evaluated as a catalyst for Suzuki carbon-carbon cross-coupling reactions using water as the solvent. The nanocatalysts show good catalytic activities for aryl iodides and aryl bromides and moderate activity with aryl chloride substrates. Coupling of sterically hindered substrates could also be achieved in reasonable yields. The heterogeneous catalyst is stable, can be stored without precautions to exclude air or moisture, and can be easily recycled and reused.

Reservoir computing has been an intriguing paradigm in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning that draws inspiration from the complex dynamics of recurrent neural networks found in biological systems. Unlike traditional neural networks, reservoir computing separates the training of a fixed, randomly connected ‘reservoir’layer from a simpler ‘readout’ layer. This distinctive architecture allows the reservoir to process information in a highly dynamic and nonlinear manner.

Environmental control of the alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) and other stress response genes in plants is in part brought about by transcriptional regulation involving the G-box cis-acting DNA element and bZIP G-box Binding Factors (GBFs). The mechanisms of GBF regulation and requirements for additional factors in this control process are not well understood. In an effort to identify potential GBF binding and control partners, maize GBF1 was used as bait in a yeast two-hybrid screen of an A. thaliana cDNA library. GBF Interacting Protein 1 (GIP1) arose from the screen as a 496 amino acid protein with a predicted molecular weight of 53,748 kDa that strongly interacts with GBFs. Northern analysis of A. thaliana tissue suggests a 1.8-1.9 kb GIP1 transcript, predominantly in roots. Immunolocalization studies indicate that GIP1 protein is mainly localized to the nucleus. In vitro electrophoretic mobility shift assays using an Adh G-box DNA probe and recombinant A. thaliana GBF3 or maize GBF1, showed that the presence of GIP1 resulted in a tenfold increase in GBF DNA binding activity without altering the migration, suggesting a transient association between GIP1 and GBF. Addition of GIP1 to intentionally aggregated GBF converted GBF to lower molecular weight macromolecular complexes and GIP1 also refolded denatured rhodanese in the absence of ATP. These data suggest GIP1 functions to enhance GBF DNA binding activity by acting as a potent nuclear chaperone or crowbar, and potentially regulates the multimeric state of GBFs, thereby contributing to bZIP-mediated gene regulation.

Studies have compared the chemical properties of tobacco smoke to those of cannabis smoke,with the obj.ctive of identifying the chemical attributes responsible for the mutagenicity and carcinogenicity of cannabis *** studies have included small sample sizes and produced conflicting *** aim of this study was to assess the maj.r chemical and physical variations of cannabis smoke across a range of cannabis samples of different potencies and origins,sourced from the illegal market in New *** cannabis samples were studied ranging from 1.0%to 13.4%delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol(D9THC)content.A smoking machine was used to smoke“j.ints”(cannabis cigarettes)and the chemical/physical properties of the smoke *** chemical constituents of the smoke extracts were analysed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.A range of different chemical constituents(in addition to D9THC)were identified and their concentrations *** were identified as the maj.r variable in cannabis smoke,showing a 40-fold range in total terpenoid *** of the total particulate matter showed that significantly different levels of particulate matter were produced between the different cannabis samples,ranging from 14.6 to 66.3 mg/g of cannabis *** D9THC delivery efficiency during smoking was also investigated and produced consistent results showing a mean and median of 12.6%and 10.8%,respectively,of the theoretically available D9THC(ranging from 7.2%to 28.0%).

This work uses regression models to analyze two characteristics of recurrent congestion： breakdown, the transition from freely flowing conditions to a congested state, and duration, the time between the onset and clearance of recurrent congestion. First, we apply a binary logistic regression model where a continuous measurement for traffic flow and a dichoto- mous categorical variable for time-of-day （AM- or PM-rush hours） is used to predict the probability of breakdown. Second, we apply an ordinary least squares regression model where categorical variables for time-of-day （AM- or PM-rush hours） and day-of-the-week （Monday-Thursday or Friday） are used to predict recurrent congestion duration. Models are fitted to data collected from a bottleneck on 1-93 in Salem, NH, over a period of 9 months. Results from the breakdown model, predict probabilities of recurrent congestion, are consistent with observed traffic and illustrate an upshift in breakdown probabilities between the AM- and PM-rush periods. Results from the regression model for congestion duration reveal the presences of significant interaction between time-of-day and day-of-the-week. Thus, the effect of time-of-day on congestion duration depends on the day-of-the-week. This work provides a simplification of recurrent congestion and recovery, very noisy processes. Simplification, conveying complex relationships with simple statistical summaries-facts, is a practical and powerful tool for traffic administrators to use in the decision-making process.
