Testicular Burkitt’s Lymphoma: A Case Report and Literature Review

Background: Burkitt’s lymphoma of the testis (TBL) is a rare and extremely aggressive malignant usually diagnosed in front of a testicular mass. We describe an interesting single case of TBL managed by a combined multimodal approach with a review of the literature. Case Report: A patient aged 69-year-old male, newly hypertensive, who presented with a twelve-month history of right testis progressive painful scrotal swelling, which worsens following a motorbike accident. Clinical examination revealed a large tender mass in an erythematous right scrotal bursa. A scrotal ultrasound showed a right heterogenous intra-testicular mass. The patient underwent unilateral (right) radical orchiectomy. Histopathological examination revealed presence of monomorphic lymphoid cells, with moderate to increased size, dissociated inconstantly by macrophages consistent with a Burkitt’s-like non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. After surgery, the patient was transferred to oncologist for adjuvant chemotherapy. Conclusion: A testicular mass is a usual circumstance for the discovery of a primary tumour of the testicle. Burkitt’s testicular lymphoma is a rare tumour whose diagnosis is based on histological findings. There are non-consensual etiological or predisposing factors. The treatment depends imperatively on the stage of the disease. Therapeutic modalities relay on in surgical excision, chemotherapy and radiation therapy but the accurate procedures are not standardized.

Background: The diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa) relies on clinical assessment with digital rectal examination, serum PSA and histological examination. Limitations in our technical facilities, high financial cost of ultrasound-guided biopsy often prevent us from implementing the guidelines on the practice of prostate biopsy. Methods: We conducted a retrospective and cross-sectional descriptive study comparing digital-guided and ultrasound-guided transrectal prostate biopsy of 400 patients over a period of 12 years in the Yaounde Central Hospital. We reviewed files of patients who underwent digital and ultrasound guided biopsy procedures. Data was analyzed using EPI info 7.0. Parametric variables were reported as means and standard deviations and percentages and counts were used to report categorical variables. Results: Out of the 400 patients, 292 digital-guided transrectal biopsies (73%) and 108 ultrasound-guided transrectal biopsies (27%) were performed in patients who were suspected of having prostate cancer (PCa). Patients were aged between 39 to 90 years. Both procedures were effective in identifying prostate cancer. Gleason score between 2 to 10 detected prostate adenocarcinoma for 301 patients (75.2%). The complications included anal pain, rectal bleeding, hematuria and urinary tract infections, with an occurrence rate similar for both ultrasound-guided (2.25%) and digitally-guided techniques (2.5%). Seven patients (1.75%) required hospitalization for management of complications. The mortality rate was null. Conclusion: Both techniques are effective in detecting PCa with the similar complication rates. Digital-guided trans-rectal prostate biopsy still has its place in a resource-limited setting like ours.

Spatio-Temporal Dynamics of the Noun Floodplain (Cameroon) Using Remote Sensing

In Cameroon, the pressure on wetlands appears to be increasing, leading to desertification and land degradation. This study aims to characterize the spatial and temporal dynamics of land cover in the Noun floodplain in Cameroon using multi-date satellite data. To achieve this, the methodology consisted in using remote sensing and geographical information’s systems techniques to identify spatial units and detect changes over a 22-year period (1999 to 2021). The land cover maps were produced from an unsupervised classification with maximum likelihood. The results identified eight classes: herbaceous savannahs with shrubs, forest galleries, fields and plantations, herbaceous tan, young fallows, mineralized and built-up soils, bare soils and surface waters. It appears that in 1999, the landscape was dominated by natural vegetation (72.6%) located from north to south of the Noun plain. However, since 2004, the landscape has been dominated by agricultural areas (56.8%). Natural formations have been progressively reduced in space over time. The evolution of the Noun floodplain landscape reveals that 14.3% of the space has remained stable. These are fields and plantations, young fallows, mineralized soils and surface water. This space has not migrated to other classes. While about 73.9% of the area has moved to higher classes, of which 35.6% to herbaceous tans and 26% to fields and plantations. On the other hand, 72.6% of the area (herbaceous savannahs and forests gallery) has been heavily degraded. These results show that the landscape of the Noun floodplain is marked by a progressive agricultural extension, which would be at the origin of the land degradation. Therefore they alert the different actors in the territory on the level of advanced land degradation and suggest sustainable land management on a local scale.

Hydrogeophysical Parameters Estimation for Aquifer Characterisation in Hard Rock Environment: A Case Study from Yaounde, Cameroon

Detailed local geological and hydrogeophysical investigations were carried out for the aquifer in Yaoundé, Cameroon to delineate the architecture of different subsurface geological horizons using lithologs and generated vertical electrical sounding (VES) data. An attempt has also been made to estimate aquifer transmissivity from resistivity data. The transmissivity of the uncon?ned aquifer was computed by determining the Dar-Zarrouk parameters (longitudinal unit conductance and transverse unit resistance) and were compared with the actual field transmissivity. The results showed a direct relation between aquifer transmissivity and transverse resistance. The relationship established has therefore, been generalized in the study area in order to evaluate hydraulic conductivity and transmissivity at all the points where geoelectrical measurements have been carried out. This generalization allows one to derive maps of the product Kσ and transmissivity in the study area based on geoelectrical measurements. These maps are important in future modelling processes oriented towards better exploitation of the aquifers.

Sedimentological Characterization of Alluvial Gold Deposits of Betrare-Oya and Its Surroundings (Cameroon Eastern Region)

Sedimentological methods such as granulometry, morphoscopy and heavy minerals analysis have been carried out to characterize alluvial gold deposits of Betare-Oya and its surroundings, with the aim to determine their origin and conditions in which they are formed and also to determine the mineralogical content of these deposits, their nature and distribution. It came out from this study the following: The alluvial deposits studied are sand, constituting of coarse fraction (grains), medium grains in abundant and fine grains. The average values of sorting index (S0) and coefficient of asymmetry (A) are respectively 2.53 and 0.73. These values indicate that the sand is poorly arranged and poorly sorted with a better classification or arrangement in the coarse fraction (grains). These are sediments that are deposited together by high competent currents. It would therefore probably be torrential deposits and or streams from short transport. Unused grains are dominating (80.5%) which translate a proximal source of the sediments. So it would be probably from the dismantling of the surrounding landforms. The heavy minerals studied revealed the presence of the following minerals;zircon, gold, sphene, green hornblende, tourmaline, rutile, augite, hypersthene, sillimanite, glau-cophane, biotite, staurotide, and the opaque. These minerals belong to the cortege of plutonic and metamorphic rocks from a single proximal distributing province.

Considering phase changes associated with a high-temperature molten material cooled down from the outside,this work presents an improvement of the modelling and the numerical simulation of such processes for an application pertaining to the safety of light water nuclear *** a core meltdown accident,the behaviour of the core melt(aka corium)into a steel vessel is of tremendous importance when evaluating the vessel *** correctly the heat fluxes requires the numerical simulation of the interaction between the liquid material and its solid counterpart which forms during the solidification process,but also may melt *** simulate this configuration,encoun-tered in various industrial applications,one considers a bi-phase model constituted by a liquid phase in contact and interaction with its solid *** liquid phase may solidify in presence of low energetic source,while the solid phase may melt due to an intense heat flux from the high-temperature *** the frame of the in-house legacy code,several simplifying assumptions(0D multi-layer discretization,instantaneous heat transfer via a quadratic temperature profile in solids)are made for the modelling of such phase *** the present work,these shortcomings are illustrated and further overcome by solving a 2D heat conduction model in the solid by a mixed Raviart-Thomas finite element method coupled to the liquid phase due to heat and mass exchanges through Stefan *** liquid phase is modeled with a 0D multi-layer *** 0D-liquid and 2D-solid mod-els are coupled by a Stefan like phase change interface *** sanity checks are performed to assess the validity of the approach on 1D and 2D academical configurations for which exact or reference solutions are *** more advanced situations(genu-ine multi-dimensional phase changes and an"industrial-like scenario")are simulated to verify the appropriate behavior of the obtained coupled simulation schem

All-optical forward-viewing photoacoustic probe for high-resolution 3D endoscopy

A miniature forward-viewing endoscopic probe that provides high-resolution 3D photoacoustic images is *** probe is of outer diameter 3.2mm and comprised of a transparent Fabry-Pérot(FP)polymer-film ultrasound sensor that is located at the distal end of a rigid optical fiber *** laser pulses are coupled simultaneously into all cores of the bundle and are transmitted through the FP sensor to provide wide-field tissue illumination at the distal *** resulting photoacoustic waves are mapped in 2D by sequentially scanning the input end of the bundle with an interrogation laser beam in order to individually address different points on the FP *** this way,the sensor acts as a high-density ultrasound array that is comprised of 50,000 individual elements,each of which is 12μm in diameter,within the 3.2mm diameter footprint of the *** fine spatial sampling that this affords,along with the wide bandwidth(f_(-3dB)=34 MHz)of the sensor,enables a high-resolution photoacoustic image to be *** measured on-axis lateral resolution of the probe was depth-dependent and ranged from 45-170μm for depths between 1 and 7 mm,and the vertical resolution was 31μm over the same depth *** system was evaluated by acquiring 3D images of absorbing phantoms and the microvascular anatomies of a duck embryo and mouse *** image fidelity was *** is anticipated that this type of probe could find application as a tool for guiding laparoscopic procedures,fetal surgery and other minimally invasive interventions that require a millimeter-scale forward-viewing 3D photoacoustic imaging probe.
