Temporal changes in physiological and performance responses across game-specific simulated basketball activity

Purpose: The aims of this study were to:(1) provide a comprehensive physiological profile of simulated basketball activity and(2) identify temporal changes in player responses in controlled ***: State-level male basketball players(n = 10) completed 4 × 10 min simulated quarters of basketball activity using a reliable and valid courtbased test. A range of physiological(ratings of perceived exertion, blood lactate concentration([BLa~—]), blood glucose concentration([BGlu]), heart rate(HR), and hydration) and physical(performance and fatigue indicators for sprint, circuit, and j.mp activity) measures were collected across ***: Significantly reduced [BLa~—](6.19 ± 2.30 vs. 4.57 ± 2.33 mmol/L; p = 0.016) and [BGlu](6.91 ± 1.57 vs. 5.25 ± 0.81 mmol/L;p = 0.009) were evident in the second half. A mean HR of 180.1 ± 5.7 beats/min(90.8% ± 4.0% HR max) was observed, with a significant increase in vigorous activity(77%—95% HR max)(11.31 ± 6.91 vs. 13.50 ± 6.75 min; p = 0.024) and moderate decrease in near-maximal activity(>95% HR_(max))(7.24 ± 7.45 vs. 5.01 ± 7.20 min) in the second half. Small increases in performance times accompanied by a significantly lower circuit decrement(11.67% ± 5.55% vs. 7.30% ± 2.16%; p = 0.032) were apparent in the second ***: These data indicate basketball activity imposes higher physiological demands than previously thought and temporal changes in responses might be due to adapted pacing strategies as well as fatigue-mediated mechanisms.

The accurate mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL) depends notably on the number of recombination events occurring in the segregating population. The cost of phenotyping often limits the sample size used in QTL mapping. To get round this problem, we assessed a selective phenotyping method, called qtlRec sampling. In order to improve the accuracy of QTL mapping, a subset of individuals was selected to maximize the number of recombination events at putative QTL positions;the usefulness of this subset was compared to a selected sample built to maximize the recombination rate over the whole genome. We assessed this method on the quantitative oil content trait in Brassica napus. We showed that the qtlRec strategy could allow increasing accuracy (both support interval and position) of QTL location while it maintained a similar power of detection. We then applied this approach to the B. napus—Leptosphaeria maculans pathosystem for which resistance QTL with minor effect were previously identified. This allowed the validation of the QTL in six genomic regions. The qtlRec method is an attractive strategy for validating QTL in multiple year and/or location trials for a trait which requires costly and time-consuming phenotyping.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of polystyrene divinylbenzene copolymer HPLC columns on the chromatographic performance of the USP compendial method for doxycycline hyclate. The compendial method was implemented based on the assessment of the chromatographic performance of six USP defined L21 polystyrene divinylbenzene HPLC columns. Modifications to the method were based on USP for chromatography. The method was validated for the determination of doxycycline hyclate and its impurities in commercially available drug products. A number of different polystyrene-divinylbenzene columns were tested and failed to provide selectivity for the resolution of doxycycline and its impurities. Separation was optimally achieved on an Agilent PLPR-S column (250 × 4.6 mm, 8 μm) by using an Agilent 1260 series HPLC system. Doxycycline hyclate and its impurities were eluted isocratically at a flow rate of 1 mL/min with mobile phase and detected at 270 nm. The column temperature was maintained at 60oC. The method was validated according to USP category I requirements for Assay. Validation acceptance criteria were met in all cases. The analytical range for doxycycline hyclate was 50 - 250 μg/mL and the linearity was r2 > 0.999 over three days. The method was determined to be specific. Both accuracy (95.1% - 102.4%) and precision (0.50% - 4.8%) were established across the analytical range for low, intermediate and high QC concentrations. Method applicability was demonstrated by analyzing marketed products of doxycycline hyclate, in which results showed potency meeting USP acceptance criteria. In conclusion, this study described the remarkable differences in selectivity that were encountered during the implementation phase for the compendial methods for doxycycline and its impurities in marketed products and it could be used in the future to assss the product quality of doxycycline hyclate capsules stored in the National stockpiles.

Due to the impoundment of the Yangtze River, the Three Gorges Dam in China fosters high land-use dynamics. Soil erosion is expected to increase dramatically. One of the key factors in soil erosion control is the vegetation cover and crop type. However, determining these factors adequately for the use in soil erosion modeling is very time-consuming especially for large mountainous areas, such as the Xiangxi （香溪） catchment in the Three Gorges area. In our study, the crop and management factor C was calculated using the fractional vegetation cover （CFvc） based on Landsat-TM images from 2005, 2006, and 2007 and on literature studies （CLIT）. In 2007, the values of CFvc range between 0.001 and 0.98 in the Xiangxi catchment. The mean CFVC value is 0.05. CLIT values are distinctly higher, ranging from 0.08 to 0.46 with a mean value of 0.32 in the Xiangxi catchment. The mean potential soil loss amounts to 120.62 t/ha/a in the Xiangxi catchment when using CLIT for modeling. Based on CFVC, the predicted mean soil loss in the Xiangxi catchment is 11.50 t/ha/a. Therefore, CLIT appears to bemore reliable than the C factor based on the fractional vegetation cover.

东昆仑水泥厂地区造山后火山-沉积盆地内形成的牦牛山组磨拉石建造不整合覆盖在前泥盆系地层之上,其形成时代的研究对限定东昆仑早古生代洋盆关闭的时间具有重要意义。应用激光烧蚀多接收器电感耦合等离子体质谱仪(LAMC-ICPMS)方法,对火山-沉积盆地内牦牛山组不同层位的流纹岩夹层进行了精确的锆石U-Pb定年研究。结果表明,盆地北缘牦牛山组底砾岩之上的流纹岩(B743-2)中岩浆锆石^(206)Pb/^(238)U年龄平均值为423.2±1.8Ma,盆地西缘牦牛山组底砾岩之上的流纹岩(B820-1)中岩浆锆石^(206)Pb/^(238)U年龄平均值为408.2±2.4Ma,盆地西缘和南缘牦牛山组中上部碎屑岩中流纹岩夹层(B705-1和B656-1)的岩浆锆石^(206)Pb/^(238)U年龄平均值分别为404.9±4.8Ma和399.6±2.8Ma。它们代表了牦牛山组不同层位火山岩的形成年龄,由此可以限定水泥厂地区牦牛山组形成时间为400～423Ma。上述年代学结果较为精确地限定了东昆仑早古生代洋盆关闭的构造年代。流纹岩中2486～920Ma元古代继承锆石的发现,说明东昆仑南的变质基底和扬子板块变质基底类似,是晋宁期0.9～1.0Ga罗迪尼亚超大陆形成时发育起来的。
