Objective To examine the association of atherosclerosis burden in the survivors of an asymptomatic elderly cohort study and its relationship to other coronary risk factors (specifically, age) by evaluating aortic atherosclerotic wall burden by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods A total of 312 participants in an ongoing observational cohort study underwent cardiac and descending thoracic aorta imaging by MRI. Maximum wall thickness was measured and the mean wall thickness ***/outer wall ratio was used as a normalized wall index (NWI) adjusted for artery size difference among participants. Percent wall volume (PWV) was calculated as NWI ×*** In this asymptomatic cohort (mean age: 76 years), the mean (Sd) aortic wall area andwall thicknesswere 222 ±45 mm2 and 2.7 ±0.4 mm, respectively. Maximum wall thickness was 3.4 ±0.6 mm, and PWV was 32% ±4%. Women appeared to have smaller wall area,but after correcting for their smaller artery size, had significantly higher PWV than men (P = 0.03). Older age was associatedwith larger wall area (P = 0.04 for trend) with similar PWVs. However, there were no statistically significant associations between standard risk factors,Framingham global risk, or metabolic syndrome status, therapy for cholesterol or hypertension, coronary or aortic calcium score, and the aortic wall burden. Aortic calcificationwas associated with coronary calcification. Conclusions Asymptomatic elderly in this cohort had a greater descending thoracic aortic wall volume that correlated with age, andwomen had a significantly increased PWV compared to men. In these survivors, the atherosclerotic aortic wall burden was not significantly associated with traditional risk factors or with coronary or aortic calcium scores or coronary calcium progression. Results suggest that age, or as yet unidentified risk factor(s), may be responsible for the increase in atherosclerosis.

The mitochondrion serves many functions in the central nervous system （CNS） and other organs beyond the well-recognized role of adenosine triphosphate （ATP） production. This includes calcium-dependent cell signaling, regulation of gene expression, synthesis and release of cytotoxic reactive oxygen species, and the release of cytochrome c and other apoptotic cell death factors. Traumatic injury to the CNS results in a rapid and, in some cases, sustained loss of mitochondrial function. One consequence of compromised mitochondrial function is induction of the mitochondrial permeability transition （mPT） state due to formation of the cyclosporine A sensitive permeability transition pore （mPTP）. In this mini-review, we summarize evidence supporting the involvement of the mPTP as a mediator of mitochondrial and cellular demise following CNS traumatic injury and discuss the beneficial effects and limitations of the current ex- perimental strategies targeting the mPTP.

AIM： To find out whether there is a significant difference in the prevalence of the precore stop codon mutation between HBeAg positive and anti-HBe positive children. METHOdS： We investigated a large pediatric population of 155 European children （mean age 10.9 years） with chronic hepatitis B by PCR and direct sequencing. Ninety were HBeAg positive and 65 had seroconversion to anti-HBe. Additionally genotyping was performed. RESULTS： Seventy-four （48%） of the sequenced HBV strains were attributed to genotype d and 81 （52%） to genotype A. In the group of 90 HBeAg positive patients, 2 （2.2%） 1896-G-to-A transitions leading to precore stop codon mutation were found, and in the group of 65 anti-HBe positive children, 5 （7.7%） were identified harbouring HBeAg-minus mutants. The difference was not statistically significant （P= 0.13）. CONCLUSIONS： HBeAg minus variants as predominant viral HB strains play a minor role in the course of chronic hepatitis B in European children.

The role of adult neural stem cells(NSCs)in demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system(CNS):Multipotent NSCs hold great potential for cell replacement in diseases and upon injury of the *** from radial glial cells during nervous system development,adult NSCs are localized in the subgranular zone of the hippocampus and the subventricular zone(SVZ)of the lateral brain ventricles,the main neurogenic zones of the adult *** precursor cells(type 1 cells)exhibiting properties of radial glial cells give rise to granule neurons through distinct intermediate precursor cells,and integrate into the hippocampal circuitry[reviewed by Kempermann et al.(2015)].Likewise,under physiological conditions,neuron generation by mouse SVZ-derived NSCs(also known as type B cells)is the predominant cell fate,which thereby results in large numbers of transient amplifying precursor cells(also known as type C cells)which in turn differentiate into neuroblasts(type A cells).These cells migrate along the rostral migratory stream into the olfactory bulb where they undergo maturation into local *** structure of the rodent SVZ differs from that of the human SVZ since the proliferative capacity is reduced,and migration of neuroblasts is a rare event in adult humans[reviewed by Lim and Alvarez-Buylla(2016)].

dear Editor,For more than two decades,Arabidopsis thaliana plants have been routinely grown in vitro within transparent Petri dishes containing agar-based solid *** convenient to study root developmental,nutritional and morphological responses to abiotic cues and to elucidate gene functions following reverse and forward genetic approaches,this system exposes roots to light during illumination of the ***,Zheng et al.(2019)raised serious concerns whether root growth behavior and molecular root reactions in this experimental set-up are solely due to the designedly and chemically defined growth substrate composition,in their case phosphate(Pi)deficiency,or due to light-triggered reactions that are artificially-induced by exposing roots to light.
