Phylogenetic Analysis of Brine Shrimp (Artemia) in China Using DNA Barcoding

DNA barcoding is a powerful approach for characterizing species of organisms,especially those with almost identical morphological features,thereby helping to to establish phylogenetic relationships and reveal evolutionary histories. In this study,we chose a 648-bp segment of the mitochondrial gene,cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI),as a standard barcode region to establish phylogenetic relation-ships among brine shrimp (Artemia) species from major habitats around the world and further focused on the biodiversity of Artemia species in China,especially in the Tibetan Plateau. Samples from five major salt lakes of the Tibetan Plateau located at altitudes over 4,000 m showed clear differences from other Artemia pop-ulations in China. We also observed two consistent amino acid changes,153A/v and 183L/F,in the COI gene between the high and low altitude species in China. Moreover,indels in the COI sequence were identified in cyst and adult samples unique to the Co Qen population from the Tibetan Plateau,demonstrating the need for additional investigations of the mitochondrial genome among Tibetan Artemia populations.

Sexual selection is considered the major cause of sexual dimorphism, but recent observations suggest that natural selection may play a more important role in the evolution of sex differentiation than previously recognized. Therefore, studying the trade-offs between natural selection and sexual selection is crucial to a better understanding of the ecology underlying the evolution of sexual dimorphism. The freshwater blenny , a fish inhabiting lakes and rivers around the Mediterranean Sea, displays strong sexual dimorphism in size, shape, and behavior (i.e., larger body and head size for males and higher swimming requirements for females during the reproductive period). We tested for differences in sexual dimorphism in size and shape between the populations from lake and river habitats with the goal of identifying the trade-offs between natural and sexual selection that underlie variations in sexual dimorphism in this species. Our results show i) differences in sexual size dimorphism (SSizeD) in accordance to Rensch's rule (i.e., larger individuals in rivers associated with higher SSizeD), and ii) a decrease in shape differentiation between males and females in lake populations. Together, this suggests that the different environmental conditions between lake and river habitats (e.g., resource limitations, predation pressure, water velocity) affect the relative importance of sexual selection in the display of sexual dimorphism within the species. This study highlights the importance of considering the environmental conditions to which populations are exposed to better understand the ecology underlying the evolution of sexual dimorphism.

BACKGROUND Patients with ulcerative colitis(UC) may be exposed to opioids over their disease duration. The use of such medications carries significant risk, including intestinal dysmotility and potential for addiction. However, the rates of narcotic use and misuse in patients with UC have not been studied extensively. Functional gastrointestinal disorders(FGID) are prevalent in patients with UC, and have been shown to increase the risk of narcotic use and misuse in patients with Crohn's disease. We hypothesized that patients with UC and a concurrent diagnosis of FGID would have increased rates of both opioid use and misuse in our patient *** To evaluate the prevalence of chronic opioid use and misuse in *** A retrospective chart review of UC patients seen at the University of virginia Digestive Health Center was performed on all patients evaluated between 2006 and 2011. Patient demographics, medical, surgical, and medication histories were obtained from the electronic medical record. Concomitant diagnosis of FGID was also noted at the time. The electronic prescription monitoring program was accessed to obtain prescription opioid filling histories. Prescription opioid misuse was defined as opioid prescriptions filled from four or more prescribers and four or more different pharmacies in a 12-mo *** A total of 497 patients with UC were included. Patients with UC and FGID were more likely to be female, but no other demographic variables were associated with FGID. Of the UC patients who had FGID, a greater proportion were found to be using opioids chronically(36% with FGID vs 9% without FGID, P vs 1.3%, P variate logistic regression demonstrated a significant association with FGID and chronic opioid use(OR = 4.50; 95%CI: 1.91-10.59) and opioid misuse(OR = 5.19; 95%CI1.04-25.76). Objective:To investigate the malaria parasitemia,CD4~+ cell counts and some haematological indices among HIv-malaria co-infected adult patients with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).Methods:A total of 342 adult HIv positive subjects were recruited at the consultant outpatient HIv/AIDS *** of Benin Teaching Hospital,Benin City,Nigeria between June 2011 to November *** samples were taken for malaria parasite count,CD4~+ cell count and other haematological ***:Out of the 342 adult HIv positive subjects a total of 254 patients(74.3%) were found to have malaria *** incidence of malaria parasitemia increased with advancing clinical stage of HIv infection and this was statistically significant(P=0.002).There was no statistical significance when gender was compared with the HIv-malaria status(P>0.05).Of the 254 co-infected patients,134(52.8%) had high parasitemia (>1.25×10~9/L).Sixty patients were found to be hyperparasitemic(>2.5 parasites/L).There was a significant association between CD4~+ cell count and having significant parasitemia(Pv-malaria co-infection(P>0.05).Conclusions:The prevalence of parasitemia is high among the HIv/AIDS infected patients.

Serial reuse raceways in fish hatcheries typically use dam boards and screens to separate each raceway unit in the series. This paper describes a novel raceway splash plate constructed of aluminum plate and angle, which eliminates the need for screens when mounted on top of raceway dam boards. In addition to reducing the labor required to remove and replace, and clean screens, the splash plate increased the amount of available rearing space. Incoming water dissolved oxygen concentrations were also increased. These splash plates are relatively easy and inexpensive to fabricate, and their use can lead to increased efficiencies during hatchery rearing.

Objectives To estimate the prevalence of malnutrition in elderly cancer patients and its association with frailty and primary cancer treatment recommendations in patients with the two most prevalent cancers(colorectal cancer,CRC and breast cancer,BC)in the Centre-val de Loire region of *** The entire cohort of 704 patients aged 75 years or older presenting with cancer who underwent comprehensive geriatric assessment(CGA)between 2014 and 2017 was *** status,frailty(defined by the Balducci classification system based on CGA parameters and comorbidity),and pathological criteria were analyzed in terms of the cancer treatment recommendations suggested by geriatricians both in the whole cohort and in those with CRC and *** In the whole group of 704 patients(84.3+/-4.8 years),the prevalence of malnutrition was 62.9%,and was higher in CRC than in BC patients(71.1%vs 55.4%,Pvariate analysis,malnutrition and frailty(as determined by the Balducci classification system)were independently related in CRC patients(OR:7.28,95%CI,1.58~34.03;P=0.012)and were unrelated to metastasis[odds ratio(OR):1.34,95%CI,0.56~3.18;P=0.5].By contrast,malnutrition in BC patients was related exclusively to the extent of metastasis(OR:3.52,95%CI,1.50~8.24;P=0.002).It was also demonstrated that geriatricians had a greater tendency to suggest only palliative care to CRC patients presenting with malnutrition(15.4%vs 2.7%,P=0.006)than to BC patients(9.8%vs 5.4%,NS).Conclusion Malnutrition in elderly cancer patients is prevalent,especially in those with colorectal cancer,where malnutrition is frailty-related and may strongly impact on cancer treatment strategies.

Domestication of cranberry and blueberry began in the United States in the early 1800s and 1900s,respectively,and in part owing to their f lavors and health-promoting benefits are now cultivated and consumed *** industry continues to face a wide variety of production challenges(*** pressures),as well as a demand for higher-yielding cultivars with improved fruit quality ***,molecular tools to help guide breeding efforts for these species have been relatively limited compared with those for other high-value ***,we describe the construction and analysis of the first pangenome for both blueberry and *** analysis of these pangenomes revealed both crops exhibit great genetic diversity,including the presence-absence variation of 48.4%genes in highbush blueberry and 47.0%genes in *** genes,those not shared by all cultivars,are significantly enriched with molecular functions associated with disease resistance and the biosynthesis of specialized metabolites,including compounds previously associated with improving fruit quality *** discovery of thousands of genes,not present in the previous reference genomes for blueberry and cranberry,will serve as the basis of future research and as potential targets for future breeding *** pangenome,as a multiple-sequence alignment,as well as individual annotated genomes,are publicly available for analysis on the Genome Database for vaccinium-a curated and integrated web-based relational ***,the core-gene predictions from the pangenomes will serve useful to develop a community genotyping platform to guide future molecular breeding efforts across the family.
