High-Throughput Field Plant Phenotyping:A self-supervised sequential CNN Method to segment Overlapping Plants

High-throughput plant phenotyping—the use of imaging and remote sensing to record plant growth dynamics—is becoming more widely *** first step in this process is typically plant segmentation,which requires a well-labeled training dataset to enable accurate segmentation of overlapping ***,preparing such training data is both time and labor *** solve this problem,we propose a plant image processing pipeline using a self-supervised sequential convolutional neural network method for in-field phenotyping *** first step uses plant pixels from greenhouse images to segment nonoverlapping in-field plants in an early growth stage and then applies the segmentation results from those early-stage images as training data for the separation of plants at later growth *** proposed pipeline is efficient and self-supervising in the sense that no human-labeled data are *** then combine this approach with functional principal components analysis to reveal the relationship between the growth dynamics of plants and *** show that the proposed pipeline can accurately separate the pixels of foreground plants and estimate their heights when foreground and background plants overlap and can thus be used to efficiently assess the impact of treatments and genotypes on plant growth in a field environment by computer vision *** approach should be useful for answering important scientific questions in the area of high-throughput phenotyping.

Plasticity in the antipredator behavior of the orange-footed sea cucumber under shifting hydrodynamic forces

Marine invertebrates that move too slowly to evade unfavorable environmental change may instead exhibit phenotypic plasticity,allowing them to adjust to varying *** orange-footed sea cucumber Cucumaria frondosa is a slow-moving suspension feeder that is preyed on by the purple sunstar solaster *** sea cucumber's antipredator behavior involves changing shape and detaching from the substratum,which might increase its probability of being displaced by water motion into an unsuitable *** hypothesized that sea cucumbers'antipredator responses would be diminished under stronger hydrodynamic forces,and that behavioral strategies would be flexible so that individuals could adjust to frequent changes in water *** a natural orange-footed sea cucumber habitat,individuals lived along a pronounced hydrodynamic gradient,allowing us to measure antipredator behavior under different water flow *** placed purple sunstars in physical contact with sea cucumbers living at various points along the gradient to elicit antipredator *** then repeated this procedure in a laboratory mesocosm that generated weak and strong hydrodynamic forces similar to those observed at the field *** in the mesocosm experiment were tested in both wave conditions to determine if their antipredator behavior would change in response to sudden environmental change,as would be experienced under deteriorating sea *** responses did not covary with hydrodynamic forces in the ***,antipredator responses in the mesocosm experiment increased when individuals were transplanted from strong to weak forces and decreased when transplanted from weak to strong ***,our results indicate environmentally induced plasticity in the antipredator behavior of the orange-footed sea cucumber.

This study examined whether urban Chinese consumers with stronger environmental values have higher valuations for plastic beverage bottles that are made of post-consumer recycled material(rPET)or that come in large sizes that use plastic more *** also assesses the effectiveness of environmental information provision and green identity labeling in increasing consumer willingness to pay for environmentally-friendly *** results suggest that urban Chinese consumers are willing to pay a premium for rPET bottles,indicating that there is a potential market for rPET food and beverage packaging in China that calls for manufacturing guidelines,safety standards,or *** environmental information and attaching green identity labels increases consumer valuations of rPET bottles,with their joint use exerting the largest ***-environmental consumers are more responsive to environmental information and green identity labeling and thus are willing to pay a higher premium for rPET ***,in terms of choosing large bottles as a means to reduce plastic use in product packaging,consumers were found to be indifferent about plastic bottle sizes even after receiving environmental *** is suggested that the inconvenience of carrying or storing large bottles might have offset their perceived environmental benefits.

Multi-Compartment sCFA Quantification in Human

short-chain fatty acids (sCFA) play an important role in human biochemistry. They originate primarily from the digestive system through carbohydrates microbial fermentation. Most sCFA produced in the colon are absorbed by the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream to be distributed throughout the body for multiple purposes. At the intestinal level, sCFA play a role in controlling fat storage and fatty acid metabolism. The effects of these beneficial compounds therefore concern overall health. They facilitate energy expenditure and are valuable allies in the fight against obesity and diabetes. sCFA are also involved in the regulation of the levels of several neurotransmitters such as GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid), glutamate, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Their role is also highlighted in many inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) or Parkinson’s disease (PD). To have a realistic picture of the distribution of sCFA in different biological compartments of the human body, we propose to study sCFA simultaneously in five human biological samples: feces, saliva, serum, cerebrospinal fluid (CsF), and urine, as well as in Dried Blood spot (DBs). To evaluate their concentration and repeatability, we used 10 aliquots from pooled samples, analyzed by 3-nitrophenylhydrazine (3-NPH) derivation and liquid chromatography coupled with high sensitivity mass spectrometry (LC-QqQ-Ms). we also evaluated the sCFA assay on Dried Blood spot (DBs). In this work, we adapted the pre-analytical parts for each sample to be able to use a common calibration curve, thus facilitating multi-assay quantification studies and so being less time-consuming. Moreover, we proposed new daughter ions from the same neutral loss (43 Da) to quantify sCFAs, thus improving the sensitivity. In conclusion, our methodology, based on a unique calibration curve for all samples for each sCFA, is well-suited to quantified them in a clinical context.

Photosynthate Unloading from seed Coats of Phaseolus vulgaris L. an Attempt to Define Conditions Required for stimulation by Abscisic Acid and Benzylamino Purine

The instablity of the stimulation of photosynthate unloading from seed coats of Phaseolus vulgaris by abscisic acid (ABA ) and benzylamino purine ( BAP ) was studied in terms of experimental conditions. ABA stimulated photosynthate unloading at pH 6 and pH 8 without close dependence upon pH. ABA at a concentration range of 10-5-10-4 mol/L displayed stimulatory effect. However, BAP revealed no effect at a concentration range of 10-6-10-4 mol/L. Experiments designed with different transport time of 14C-photosynthate indicated that ABA might act at the plasma membrane of the unloading cells. Reducing endogenous ABA level by diminishing leaf area did not facilitate the manifestation of exogenous ABA function. Potassium ion stimulated photosynthate unloading from seed coats with highest promotion at 100 mmol/L K+. However, no dependence of ABA stimulation of photosynthate unloading on K+ was found.

Global changes explain the long-term demographic trend of the Eurasian common lizard (squamata: Lacertidae)

The demographic trend of a species depends on the dynamics of its local populations,which can be compromised by local or by global ***,the relevance of local and global phenomena has rarely been investigated ***,we tested whether local phenomena compromised a species'demographic trend using the Eurasian common lizard Zootoca vivipara,the terrestrial reptile exhibiting the widest geographic distribution,as a model *** analyzed the species'ancient demographic trend using genetic data from its 6 allopatric genetic clades and tested whether its demographic trend mainly depended on single clades or on global *** vivipara's effective population size increased since 2.3 million years ago and started to increase steeply and continuously from 0.531 million years *** growth rate exhibited 2 maxima,both occurring during global climatic changes and important vegetation changes on the northern *** population size and growth rate were negatively correlated with global surface temperatures,in line with global parameters driving long-term demographic *** vivipara's ancient demography was neither driven by a single clade,nor by the 2 clades that colonized huge geographic areas after the last *** low importance of local phenomena,suggests that the experimentally demonstrated high sensitivity of this species to short-term ecological changes is a response in order to cope with short-term and local *** suggests that what affected its long-term demographic trend the most,were not these local changes/responses,but rather the important and prolonged global climatic changes and important vegetation changes on the northern hemisphere,including the opening up of the forest by humans.
