Intercrop movement of convergent lady beetle, Hippodamia convergens （coleoptera： coccinellidae）, between adjacent cotton and alfalfa

A 2-year study was conducted to characterize the intercrop movement of conver- gent lady beetle, Hippodamia convergens Guerin-Meneville （coleoptera： coccinellidae） between adjacent cotton and alfalfa. A dual protein-marking method was used to assess the intercrop movement of the lady beetles in each crop. In turns field collected lady beetles in each crop were assayed by protein specific ELISA to quantify the movement of beetles between the crops. Results indicated that a high percentage of convergent lady beetles caught in cotton （46% in 2008; 56% in 2009） and alfalfa （46% in 2008; 71% in 2009） contained a protein mark, thus indicating that convergent lady beetle movement was largely bidirectional between the adjacent crops. Although at a much lower proportion, lady beetles also showed unidirectional movement from cotton to alfalfa （5% in 2008 and 6% in 2009） and from alfalfa to cotton （9% in 2008 and 14% in 2009）. The season-long bidirectional movement exhibited by the beetles was significantly higher in alfalfa than cotton during both years of the study. The total influx of lady beetles （bidirectional and unidirectional combined） was significantly higher in alfalfa compared with that in cotton for both years. While convergent lady beetles moved between adjacent cotton and alfalfa, they were more attracted to alfalfa when cotton was not flowering and/or when alfalfa of- fered more opportunities for prey. This study offers much needed information on intercrop movement of the convergent lady beetle that should facilitate integrated pest management decisions in cotton utilizing conservation biological control.

A series of azobenzene containing side-on liquid crystalline ABA triblock copolymers were investigated. This triblock series possesses the same central liquid crystal block B and various lengths of the amorphous block A. Transmission electron microscopy （TEM）, small angle X-rays and neutron scattering （SAXS and SANS） were used to study their morphologies. After annealing the samples over weeks at a temperature within the nematic temperature range of block B, different morphologies （disordered, lamellar, perforated layer and hexagonal cylinder） were observed by TEM. The alignment behavior of these azo triblock copolymers in the magnetic field for artificial muscle application, as well as the phase period and the order-disorder transition （ODT） were studied in situ by SANS.

Thin film catalysts have been recently reported as promising catalysts owing to their good catalytic activity and reduced material amount, leading to low-cost efficient catalysts for gaseous emissions control. Here, we report the slight loading of cu in cobalt spinel using a one-step pulsed-spray evaporation chemical vapor deposition(PSE-cVD) synthesis technique for efficient short-chain volatile organic compounds(VOcs) emissions treatment. crystalline structure and morphology analyses revealed nano-crystallite sizes and open-like morphology. The catalytic performance was evaluated through the complete oxidation of c_3H_6, as a short-chain representative model of VOcs, at a high gas hourly space velocity(GHSV). Very good activity was obtained towards the complete abatement of c_3H_6 at low temperature and no carbon monoxide(cO) was formed during the oxidation process. Slightly-promoted co_3O_4 catalyst with cu introduction resulted in high catalytic activity comparing to the performance of the catalysts in the literature, due to the high dispersion of cu and high active surface oxygen amount. Moreover, to evaluate the capability of the used catalysts under near realistic reaction conditions, cO_2 effect on the catalytic activity was performed and the catalyst exhibited very good results. Thus, the adopted slightly-doping strategy to tailor a high active catalyst at low temperature could establish a very promising route to strongly enhance the activity of such other catalysts towards gas emissions abatement at low temperature.

It is widely recognized that climate change is one of the greatest challenges humanity faces in the 21st century[1,2].As the leading authority for the assessment of climate change,the Intergovernmental Panel on climate change (IPcc),in its special report on global warming of 1.5℃,has concluded that human activities have caused approximately 1.0℃ of global warming above preindustrial levels,with a likely increase of 1.5℃ between 2030 and 2052[3].climate-related risks for natural and human systems are projected to increase with global warming of 1.5℃,and increase further with 2℃ or *** risks depend on the magnitude and rate of warming,geographic location,levels of development and vulnerability,and on the choices and implementation of adaptation and mitigation options.

AIM To evaluate the effect of body mass index(BMI) on short-term functional outcome and complications in primary total knee arthroplasty. METHODS All patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty at a single institution between 2007 and 2013 were identified from a prospective arthroplasty database. 2180 patients were included in the study. Age, gender, BMI, pre- and post-operative functional scores [Western Ontario and Mc Master University Arthritis Index(WOMAc) and SF-36], complications and revision rate were recorded. Patients were grouped according to the WHO BMI classification. The functional outcome of the normal weight cohort(BMI compared to the overweight and obese(BMI ≥ 25) cohort. A separate sub-group analysis was performed comparing all five WHO BMI groups; Normal weight, overweight, class 1 obese, class 2 obese and class 3 *** With a mean age of 67.89(28-92), 2180 primary total knee replacements were included. 64.36%(1403) were female. The mean BMI was 31.86(18-52). Ninty-three percent of patients were either overweight or obese. Mean follow-up 19.33 mo(6-60 mo). There was no significant difference in pre or post-operative WOMAc score in the normal weight(BMI cohort compared to patients with a BMI ≥ 25(P > 0.05). Sub-group analysis revealed significantly worse WOMAc scores in class 2 obese 30.80 compared to overweight 25.80(P class 1 obese 25.50(P cantly worse SF-36 scores in class 2 obese 58.16 compared to overweight 63.93(P class 1 obese 63.65(P cial infections, 9(0.41%) deep infections and 19(0.87%) revisions overall with no complications or revisions in the normal weight cohort(BMI cONcLUSION Post-operative functional outcome was not influenced by BMI comparing normal weight individuals with BMI > 25. Patients should not be denied total knee arthroplasty based solely on weight alone.
