Effect of silicone oil on the microstructure, gelation and rheological properties of sorbitan monostearate–sesame oil oleogels

Oleogels contain oil or a non-polar liquid which is gelled with an agent called an organogelator. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the addition of silicone oil(cyclopentasiloxane) to the gelation process and to the properties of sorbitan monostearate(SMS)–sesame oil oleogel and compared with that of SMS–sesame oil oleogel and SMS–cyclopentasiloxane oleogel. Three different oil phases; sesame oil phase, cyclopentasiloxane phase and a mixture of cyclopentasiloxane and sesame oil, were used to prepare oleogels with SMS gelator. The critical gelling concentrations(CGC) for oleogels were determined using different concentration of SMS in a range of 5%–22%(w/w). The characterization of the developed oleogels was done using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), polarized light microscope, rheometer, X-ray diffraction(XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The addition of cyclopentasiloxane reduced the CGC of SMS–sesame oil oleogel from 20% to 10%(w/w). In microscopic characterization, the oleogels with a mixture of oil phases showed the longer and thicker three-dimensional gel network than that of oleogels with sesame oil and cyclopentasiloxane. FTIR studies demonstrated that this network formation was mainly due to hydrogen bonding. Rheological measurements revealed that the combination of cyclopentasiloxane and sesame oil produced strong gel with higher complex modulus values and longer linear viscoelastic region than oleogels prepared with sesame oil and cyclopentasiloxane. In addition, oleogels with the combination of the two oils had higher enthalpy( H m) and entropy( S m) thus could increase thermodynamic stability of the oleogels. Therefore, the addition of cyclopentasiloxane can improve the physical, ther-mal properties and stability of SMS–sesame oil oleogel, provide greater sensory profile and better product aesthetics. The developed oleogel can be a novel carrier for topical drug delivery.

The aberrant hepatic duct is classified by Huang et al.[1]into type A(right intrahepatic duct variant)and type B(left intrahepatic duct variant).Type A and B are further classified into 5(A1-5)and 6(B1-6)subtypes,*** variation of cystic duct involves only in type *** A1 or classic arrangement refers to the formation of the common hepatic duct(CHD)by the left hepatic duct(LHD)and the right hepatic duct(RHD).The RHD has two tributaries composed of the right anterior hepatic duct(RAHD)and the right posterior hepatic duct(RPHD).Then,the common bile duct(CBD)is formed when the cystic duct joins with the CHD(Fig.1).Type A2 refers to the RAHD and RPHD joining with LHD at hepatic hilum,and the absence of the *** A3 refers to the RAHD or RPHD directly draining to the *** A4 refers to the RAHD or RPHD directly draining to the *** A5 refers to the RAHD,RPHD or RHD directly draining to the cystic duct(or aberrant bile duct communicating with the cystic duct,ACC)(Fig.1)[1].

Bio-inspired Surface Structure for Slow-release of Urea Fertilizer

In this work,bio-inspired concepts,including a Self-Healing(SH)and super hydrophobic structure,were used to produce slow-release of urea *** a bottom-up process,an SH layer on the urea granule was produced from a combination of two natural waxes,palm and carnauba,and fabricated by a hot-melt coating process in a pan *** layer for super hydrophobicity was formed by a deposition of submicron-wax and carbon black particles on the SH layer to create a micro-nanostructure during *** the heat treatment,a smooth coating and even deposition of waxes throughout the urea surfaces were *** properties of the waxes,a healing mechanism,and releasing profiles were examined using an optical *** cracking of the coated urea surface,the intrinsic self-healing behavior was stimulated by heating the samples above 45℃C,corresponding to high ambient daytime ***-trapping behavior was observed at the interphase of the water and coated urea,creating super hydrophobic granule surfaces which act as an invisible layer for water-penetration *** releasing profiles of the coated urea in soil revealed that the releasing periods could be significantly extended to four-times longer than those of the uncoated urea.

Adsorption of single and mixed haloacetonitriles on silica-based porous materials: Mechanisms and effects of porous structures

Adsorption mechanisms and the role of different porous and crystalline structures on the removal of five haloacetonitriles(HANs) over hexagonal mesoporous silica(HMS), titanium substituted mesoporous silica(Ti-HMS), rod-shaped SBA-15 and microporous zeolite Na Y were investigated. In addition, the effect of p H on adsorption mechanism and selective adsorption of five HANs individually and in an equimolar mixed solution were *** results indicated that the intraparticle diffusion rate constants of the mesoporous adsorbents were higher than that of the microporous Na Y. In single solute, the order of adsorption preference(highest to lowest) was mono-HANs > di-HANs > tri-HAN. However,in mixed solute, the large molecular weight of the tri-HAN and di-HANs are more easily adsorbed than the smaller molecular weight mono-HANs. Except for SBA-15, the order of adsorption capacities in mixed HANs solute was not different compared to that observed for the single HAN solute, which might be caused by the higher accessibility to the active sites due to larger pore size. The ion-dipole electrostatic interaction was likely to be the main adsorption mechanism, and was favored at high p H values due to the high negative surface charge density of the adsorbent. The molecular structure of the HANs and hydrophilic/hydrophobic nature affected the adsorption capacities and their selective adsorption from mixed solutes.

Preparation and characterization of ceramic materials with low thermal conductivity and high strength using high-calcium fly ash

High calcium-fly ash(HCFA)collected from the Mae Moh electricity generating plant in Thailand was utilized as a raw material for ceramic *** main compositions of HCFA characterized by X-ray fluorescence mainly consisted of 28.55wt%SiO_(2),16.06wt%Al_(2)O_(3),23.40wt%CaO,and 17.03wt%Fe_(2)O_(3).Due to high proportion of calcareous and ferruginous contents,HCFA was used for replacing the potash feldspar in amounts of 10wt%-40wt%.The influence of substituting high-calcium fly ash(0-40wt%)and sintering temperatures(1000-1200℃)on physical,mechanical,and thermal properties of ceramic-based materials was *** results showed that the in-corporation of HCFA in appropriate amounts could enhance the densification and the strength as well as reduce the thermal conductivity of ceramic *** proportion of calcareous and ferruginous constituents in fly ash promoted the vitrification behavior of ceramic *** a result,the densification was enhanced by liquid phase formation at optimum fly ash content and sintering *** addition,these components also facilitated a more abundant mullite formation and consequently improved flexural strength of the ceramic *** op-timum ceramic properties were achieved with adding fly ash content between 10wt%-30wt%sintered at 1150-1200℃.At 1200℃,the max-imum flexural strength of ceramic-FA samples with adding fly ash 10wt%-30wt%(PSW-FA(10)-(30))was obtained in the range of 92.25-94.71 MPa when the water absorption reached almost zero(0.03%).In terms of thermal insulation materials,the increase in fly ash addi-tion had a positively effect on the thermal conductivity,due to the higher levels of porosity created by gas evolving from the inorganic decom-position reactions inside the ceramic-FA *** addition of 20wt%-40wt%high-calcium fly ash in ceramic samples sintered at 1150℃reduced the thermal conductivity to 14.78%-49.25%,while maintaining acceptable flexural strength values(~45.67-87.62 MPa).

Use of potentially inappropriate medications for heart failure according to the three sets of heart failure-specific criteria in Thai older patients with heart failure

OBJECTIVE To study the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications for patients with heart failure(PIMHF) use and to identify factors associated with PIMHF use in Thai older HF *** This cross-sectional analytical survey included data on older(≥ 60 years) HF patients obtained from the electronic medical record databases of secondary-and tertiary-care hospitals. The medication profiles of patients were assessed to examine whether they were prescribed any PIMHF after an HF diagnosis. For PIMHF detection, the HF-specific criteria, including 2014 St Vincent criteria, 2019 Beers criteria, and 2021 Thailand criteria were applied. The prevalence of PIMHF use was expressed as percentages. The associated factors were identified using a binary logistic regression analysis, expressed as the adjusted odds ratio(aOR) and 95% confidence interval(95% CI).RESULTS A total of 2,639 patients were included in the study. Thirty-two PIMHF were found to have been prescribed to these patients. The prevalence of PIMHF use identified by the ST Vincent criteria, the Beers criteria, the Thailand criteria, and the three combined criteria was 23.76%, 19.67%, 21.18%, and 25.16%, respectively. The factors associated with PIMHF use were secondarycare hospital(aOR = 1.54, 95% CI: 1.26-1.87), HF with preserved ejection fraction(HFp EF)(aOR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.38-2.38), hypertension(HTN)(aOR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.02-1.51), diabetes mellitus(DM)(aOR = 1.39, 95% CI: 1.10-1.75), chronic pulmonary diseases(CPD)(aOR = 2.09, 95% CI: 1.56-2.80), and connective tissue diseases(CTD)(aOR = 5.10, 95% CI: 2.20-11.83).CONCLUSIONS PIMHF are commonly used in Thai older HF patients. The factors associated with PIMHF use identified in this study include secondary-care hospital, HFp EF, HTN, DM, CPD, and CTD.

Effects of DHA-enriched hen egg yolk and L-cysteine supplementation on quality of cryopreserved boar semen

The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of docosahexaenoic acid （DHA）-enriched hen egg yolks and L-cysteine supplementation on the qualities of the cryopreserved boar semen. A total of 15 ejaculates from 5 Pietrain boars were divided into 4 groups according to the compositions of the freezing extenders used, that is, normal hen egg yolk （group Ⅰ）, DHA-enriched hen egg yolk （group Ⅱ）, normal hen egg yolk with 5 mmol L^-1 of cysteine supplementation （group Ⅲ） and DHA-enriched hen egg yolk with 5 mmol L1 of cysteine supplementation （group Ⅳ）. The semen was cryopreserved using controlled rate freezer and was thawed at 50℃ for 12 s. Progressive motility, sperm viability, acrosome integrity and functional integrity of sperm plasma membrane of the post-thawed semen were evaluated. The supplementation of L-cysteine in the freezing extender alone （group Ⅲ） improved progressive motility （P 〈 0.05）, and the supplementation of L-cysteine in combination with DHA-enriched hen egg yolk （group Ⅳ） improved both progressive motility （P 〈 0.05） and acrosome integrity （P 〈 0.01）. The use of DHA-enriched hen egg yolk alone （group Ⅱ） did not enhance any of the post-thawed semen qualities （P 〉 0.05）. In conclusion, the supplementation of antioxidant L-cysteine alone or in combination with DHA-enriched hen egg yolk significantly improved the post-thawed semen qualities, especially progressive motility and acrosome integrity.

Supplemental effect of varying L-cysteine concentrations on the quality of cryopreserved boar semen

Cryopreservation is associated with the production of reactive oxygen species, which leads to lipid peroxidation of the sperm membrane and consequently a reduction in sperm motility and decreased fertility potential. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal concentration of L-cysteine needed for cryopreservation of boar semen. Twelve boars provided semen of proven motility and morphology for this study. The semen was divided into four portions in which the lactose-egg yolk （LEY） extender used to resuspend the centrifuged sperm pellet was supplemented with various concentrations of L-cysteine to reach 0 mmol L^-1 （group Ⅰ, control）, 5 mmol L^-1 （group Ⅱ）, 10 mmol L^-1 （group Ⅲ） and 15 mmol L^-1 （group Ⅳ）. Semen suspensions were loaded in straws （0.5 mL） and placed in a controlled-rate freezer. After cryopreservation, frozen semen samples were thawed and investigated for progressive motility, viability using SYBR-14/EthD-1 staining and acrosome integrity using FITC-PNA/EthD-1 staining. There was a significantly higher （P 〈 0.01） percentage of progressive motility, viability and acrosomal integrity in two L-cysteine-supplemented groups （group Ⅱ and group Ⅲ） compared with the control. There was a biphasic effect of L-cysteine, with the highest percentage of progressive motility, viability and acrosomal integrity in group Ⅲ. In conclusion, 5 or 10 mmol L^-1 was the optimum concentration of L-cysteine to be added to the LEY extender for improving the quality of frozen-thawed boar semen.
