Background and aims:The herbal supplement Gancao,also known as licorice,belongs to the genus Glycyrrhiza and has been used worldwide for its hepatoprotective *** studies have raised concerns about potential herb-drug interactions associated with Gancao via pregnane X receptor(PXR)-mediated induction of hepatic cytochrome P4503A4(CYP3A4).The current work aimed to determine the phytochemicals in Gancao that activate PXR and induce ***:DPX2 cells were used for cell-based PXR reporter *** phytochemicals in Gancao extract were identified using a metabolomics *** effects of PXR activators identified from in vitro studies were further investigated in PXR-and CYP3A4-humanized mouse ***:Gancao was verified to be a PXR-activating *** major phytochemicals in Gancao,gly-cyrrhizin(GZ)and glycyrrhetinic acid(GA),did not activate PXR in the cell-based reporter ***,glabridin was shown to activate PXR in a dose-dependent *** vivo studies confirmed that GZ is not a PXR activator and glabridin is a weak PXR *** GA did not active PXR in vitro,it induced CYP3A4 expression in a PXR-dependent manner in the PXR-and CYP3A4-humanized mice.

This paper argues that historians have all but ignored the study of rivers and their impact on the development of human society. Apart from a somewhat terse acknowledgment of the importance of rivers in the development of ancient civilizations, from the Huang He to the Ganges, the Nile, and the Amazon, historians have by and large limited themselves to studying individual rivers, while ignoring the potential of comparative analysis of rivers. I call for a broader engagement by historians of all aspects of rivers, including their role in transportation, fishing, agriculture, industry, recreation, and the environment, peopled cultural response to rivers, and the legal regimes that have grown up around them, with special reference to the role of rivers as political boundaries.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders are commonly encountered in clinical practice, and pain is their commonest presenting symptom. In addition, patients with these disorders often demonstrate a heightened sensitivity to experimental visceral stimulation, termed visceral pain hypersensitivity that is likely to be important in their pathophysiology. Knowledge of how the brain processes sensory information from visceral structures is still in its infancy. However, our understanding has been propelled by technological imaging advances such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Positron Emission To-mography, Magnetoencephalography, and Electroen-cephalography (EEG). Numerous human studies have non-invasively demonstrated the complexity involved in functional pain processing, and highlighted a number of subcortical and cortical regions involved. This review will focus on the neurophysiological pathways (primary afferents, spinal and supraspinal transmission), brain- imaging techniques and the influence of endogenous and psychological processes in healthy controls and patients suffering from functional gastrointestinal dis- orders. Special attention will be paid to the newer EEG source analysis techniques. Understanding the pheno- typic differences that determine an individual's response to injurious stimuli could be the key to understanding why some patients develop pain and hyperalgesia in response to inflammation/injury while others do not. For future studies, an integrated approach is required incorporating an individual's psychological, autonomic, neuroendocrine, neurophysiological, and genetic prof ile to def ine phenotypic traits that may be at greater risk of developing sensitised states in response to gut in? am- mation or injury.

Photoelectrochemical Study of Passive Films on Sensitized Stainless Steel

Passive films formed on sensitized stainless steel in sulphuric acid solutions have been studied using photoelectrochemical techniques. The results of the photocurrent measurement indicate that the passive films on sensitized stainless steel are characterised with n-type or p-type semiconductor in different potential regions. The difference in the photoelectrochemical behaviour can be interpreted assuming that the passive film is an iron-chromium oxide solid solution associated with various hydration degrees of the Cr(III)-oxides at various potentials.

Over-expression of the cytochrome P450 CYP6CM1 gene has been associated with imidacloprid resistance in a number of Q and B biotype Bemisia tabaci laboratory strains from distinct geographical origins worldwide. We recently demonstrated that the Q biotype version of the CYP6CM 1 protein （CYP6CMlvQ） is capable of metabolizing imida- cloprid. Here, we show that the levels of BtCYP6CMlvQ were also elevated in laboratory- resistant strains and field-derived populations, with variable imidacloprid resistance levels, collected in Crete. High levels of CYP6CMlvQ transcripts were also determined in survivors of a heterogeneous field population, after exposure to discriminating imidacloprid dosage. Using peptide antibody-based detection assays, we demonstrated that in line with transcriptional data, the CYP6CMlvQ protein levels were higher in imidacloprid-resistant insects, which further implicates the gene as the causal factor of resistance. Finally, assess- ment of the cross-metabolism potential of CYP6CMlvQ against additional neonicotinoid molecules used for B. tabaci control revealed that clothianidin and thiacloprid, but not acetamiprid or thiamethoxam, are metabolized by the recombinant enzyme in vitro.
