In the evaluation of road roughness and its effects on vehicles response in terms of ride quality, loads induced on pavement, drivers＇ comfort, etc., it is very common to generate road profles based on the equation provided by ISO 8608 standard, according to which it is possible to group road surface profiles into eight different classes. However, real profiles are significantly different from the artificial ones because of the non-stationary fea- ture of the first ones and the not full capability of the ISO 8608 equation to correctly describe the frequency content of real road profiles. In this paper, the international roughness index, the frequency-weighted vertical acceleration awz according to ISO 2631, and the dynamic load index are applied both on artificial and real profiles, highlighting the different results obtained. The analysis carried out in this work has highlighted some limitation of the ISO 8608 approach in the description of performance and conditions of real pavement profiles. Furthermore, the different sensitivity of the various indices to the fitted power spectral density parameters is shown, which should be taken into account when performing analysis using artificial profiles.

Gastrointestinal cancer is a group of tumors that affect multiple sites of the digestive system, including the stomach, liver, colon and pancreas. These cancers are very aggressive and rapidly metastasize, thus identifying effective targets is crucial for treatment. Galectin-1(Gal-1) belongs to a family of glycan-binding proteins, or lectins, with the ability to cross-link specific glycoconjugates. A variety of biological activities have been attributed to Gal-1 at different steps of tumor progression. Herein, we summarize the current literature regarding the roles of Gal-1 in gastrointestinal malignancies. Accumulating evidence shows that Gal-1 is drastically up-regulated in human gastric cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal cancer and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma tissues, both in tumor epithelial and tumor-associated stromal cells. Moreover, Gal-1 makes a crucial contribution to the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal malignancies, favoring tumor development, aggressiveness, metastasis, immunosuppression and angiogenesis. We also highlight that alterations in Gal-1-specific glycoepitopes may be relevant for gastrointestinal cancer progression. Despite the findings obtained so far, further functional studies are still required. Elucidating the precise molecular mechanisms modulated by Gal-1 underlying gastrointestinal tumor progression, might lead to the development of novel Gal-1-based diagnostic methods and/or therapies.

Preliminary results of a new intrastromal corneal ring segment as a tissue saving procedure in photorefractive keratectomy to correct moderate to high myopia

AIM:To evaluate the clinical results after implantation of a new intrastromal corneal ring segment(ICRS)associated with photorefractive keratectomy(PRK)to correct high myopia(HM)patients with thin ***:We evaluated 42 eyes of 23 HM patients that had ICRS implantation followed by *** mean age of patients was 29.1±7.12 y(range 18 to 40 years old).Uncorrected visual acuity(UCVA),best corrected visual acuity(BCVA),keratometry,spherical equivalent,pachymetry,and aberrometry were compared using ANOVA with repeated measurements evaluated preoperatively and at last follow-up visit after the *** refractive predictability and simulated/real corneal ablation were also ***:The mean follow-up time after PRK was 6.8±1.6 *** mean preoperative UCVA improved from 20/800 preoperative to 20/100 after ICRS and 20/35 after *** mean preoperative BCVA was 20/25(range from 20/30 to 20/20)and remained unchanged after ICRS *** the PRK the mean BCVA was 20/25(range from 20/30 to 20/20).The mean spherical equivalent decreased from-7.25±1.12(range-5.00 to-9.00)preoperatively to-3.32±1.0(range-2.00 to-5.00)postoperatively(P<0.001)after ICRS implantation and decreased from-2.44±1.51 preoperatively to 0.32±0.45(range-0.625 to 0.875)postoperatively(P<0.001)after *** change in BCVA and topographic astigmatism was statistically significant(P<0.0001).CONCLUSION:ICRS in HM associated with PRK can be a tissue saving procedure and an alternative surgical option for correction of moderate to high myopia.

Sexual ornaments contribute substantially to phenotypic diversity and it is particularly relevant to understand their evolution. Ornaments can assume the function of signals-of-quality that the choosy sex uses to evaluate potential mating partners. Often there are no obvious direct benefits and investment into mate choice is primarily rewarded by beneficial alleles that are inherited to the offspring. Inter-sexual communication via sexual ornaments requires honesty of the sexual signal, yet the question of what maintains honesty remains only partially solved. One solution is that honesty is maintained by trait expression being dependent on individual condition, since condition-dependent trait expression offers an effectively inexhaustible source of genetic variability. Here we test in the highly sexually dimorphic club-legged grasshopper Gomphocerus sibiricus if putative sexual ornaments, in particular the striking front-leg clubs, are more strongly affected by a lipopolysaccharide （LPS） immune challenge than putatively not sexually selected traits. Our results show overall little condition-dependent expression of morphological and song traits, with sexually selected traits exhibiting effects comparable to nonsexually selected traits （with the possible exception of stridulatory file length and syllable-to-pause ratio in advertisement songs）. Interestingly, field observations of individuals of lethally parasitized individuals suggest that a very strong environmental challenge can specifically affect the expression of the front-leg clubs. The presence of 1% of males in natural populations with missing or heavily deformed clubs plus 5% with minor club deformations furthermore indicate that there are risks associated with club development during final ecdysis and this might act as a filter against deleterious alleles.

A new classification of the taxa formerly ascribed to Biannulariaceae(≡Catathelasmataceae),***(type),Callistosporium,Pleurocollybia,Macrocybe,Pseudolaccaria,Guyanagarika and Anupama is here *** inference of the Tricholomatineae based on the analysis of a combined dataset of nuclear genes including ITS,18S and 28S rDNA,tef1 and rpb2 data supports significantly a monophyletic origin of the aforementioned genera with the exception of Catathelasma,which is significantly related with Bonomyces and *** is therefore emended to include the clade formed by Catathelasma,Bonomyces and ***,the new family Callistosporiaceae is proposed to name the clade containing Callistosporium(=Pleurocollybia)and related *** of Callistosporium with distant lamellae,long hygrophoroid basidia and large amygdaliform spores are accommodated in the new genus ***,the new species Callistosporium pseudofelleum and Macrocybe sardoa are described,Clitocybe hesleri and *** are combined into Callistosporium and Pseudolaccaria,respectively,and Callistosporium olivascens *** is upgraded to species rank and combined into Xerophorus.
