Graphene has many advantageous properties,but its lack of an electronic band gap makes this two-dimensional material impractical for many nanoelectronic applications,for example,field-effect *** problem can be circumvented by opening up a confinement-induced gap,through the patterning of graphene into ribbons having widths of a few *** electronic properties of such ribbons depend on both their size and the crystallographic orientation of the ribbon ***,etching processes that are able to differentiate between the zigzag and armchair type edge terminations of graphene are highly sought *** this contribution we show that such an anisotropic,dry etching reaction is possible and we use it to obtain graphene ribbons with zigzag *** demonstrate that the starting positions for the carbon removal reaction can be tailored at will with precision.

Topological materials host robust properties,unaffected by microscopic perturbations,owing to the global topological properties of the bulk electron *** in which the topological invariant can be changed by easily tuning external parameters are especially sought *** pentatelluride(ZrTe_(5))is one of a few experimentally available materials that reside close to the boundary of a topological phase transition,allowing the switching of its invariant by mechanical ***,we unambiguously identify a topological insulator–metal transition as a function of strain,by a combination of ab initio calculations and direct measurements of the local charge *** model quantitatively describes the response to complex strain patterns found in bubbles of few layer ZrTe_(5) without fitting parameters,reproducing the mechanical deformation-dependent closing of the band gap observed using scanning tunneling *** calculate the topological phase diagram of ZrTe_(5) and identify the phase at equilibrium,enabling the design of device architectures,which exploit the topological switching characteristics of the system.

This paper aims to evaluate the data relating to the Koan elite around 200 BC,in the light of general trends of the post-Classical polis’s social *** article first presents prosopographical information regarding the top contributors of the famous wartime subscription list(IG XII 4,1,75–77),their relatives,as well as other contributors with more modest amounts of money who can nevertheless be identified as rich,influential,and prominent members of the local *** paper demonstrates the existence of an influential elite which exercised its power mostly outside the framework of political offices(archai),through religious activities and priesthoods,patronage in associations,and interstate ***,the paper identifies those factors that limited the influence of the elite:the instability of these families,the sustainment of democratic political institutions,and the tendency to emphasize communal efforts over individual benefactions–what is attested primarily by the specific Koan epigraphic habit.

purpose:The aim of our paper is to investigate the role of a mentor leading a research team in the overall scientific performance of an academic institution and the possible risks of their departure with a special attention to their publication ***/methodology/approach:By using SciVal subject area data,we composed a formula describing the level of vulnerability of any given university in the case of losing any of its leading mentors,identifying other risk factors by dividing their careers into separate ***:It turns out that the higher field-weighed citation impact is,the better position universities reach in the rankings by subject and the vulnerability of institutions highly depends on the mentors,especially in view of their contribution to the topic *** limitations:The analysis covers the publication output of leading researchers working at four Hungarian universities,the scope of the analysis is worth being *** implications:Our analysis has the potential to give an applicable systemic approach as well as a data collection scheme to university managements so as to formulate an inclusive and comprehensive research strategy involving the introduction of a reward system aimed at publications and further encouraging national and international research ***/value:The methodology and the principles of risk assessment laid down in our paper are not restricted to measuring the vulnerability level of a limited group of academic institutions,they can be appropriately used for investigating the role of mentors or leading researchers at every university across the globe.

The degree of dietary specialization has a fundamental impact on the ecological function and interactions of suspension *** niche differentiation by food particle size is common among obligate suspension feeders,its role is not evident in facultative *** this study,we aimed at providing new insights on the matter by focusing on sympatric mysid *** mysids use different mechanisms for raptorial and filter-feeding,they represent a more adequate model system than for example,the more extensively studied *** made morpholog-ical measurements on the 4 coexisting invasive ponto-Caspian mysid species to determine the areas and mesh sizes of their *** also quantified their clearance rates on the microalga Cryptomonas *** a laboratory experiment to reveal how morphological differences manifest in their overall filtering *** found relatively small but consistent differences in the primary filter area among the species,indicating that morphological constraints due to the enclosed position of the setae might limit the possibility for *** primary filter mesh sizes were small in all 4 species(0.69-2.73μm)with moderate but consistent intraspecific differences,suggesting that the benefit of being able to capture small particles might outweigh the pressure for *** observed clearance rates were in accordance with the morphological characteristics of the species,highlighting that auxiliary filters(present in one of the species,Limnomysis benedeni)are needed to increase filtering capacity *** study confirmed that food particle size can contribute to the niche differentiation of facultative filter feeders,but also indicated that they can tolerate a higher overlap than obligate *** observed differences were related to the habitat preferences and predatory potentials of the species,suggesting that complementarity among the different niche axes might further facilitate theircoexistence.

An approach for automatic sleep stage scoring and apnea-hypopnea detection

In this article we present an application of data mining to the medical domain sleep research, an approach for automatic sleep stage scoring and apnea-hypopnea detec- tion. By several combined techniques （Fourier and wavelet transform, derivative dynamic time warping, and waveform recognition）, our approach extracts meaningful features （fre- quencies and special patterns like k-complexes and sleep spindles） from physiological recordings containing EEG, ECG, EOG and EMG data. Based on these pieces of in- formation, an ensemble of decision trees is constructed us- ing the principle of bagging, which classifies sleep epochs in their sleep stages according to the rules by Rechtschaf- fen and Kales and annotates occurrences of apnea-hypopnea （total or partial cessation of respiration）. After that, case- based reasoning is applied in order to improve quality. We tested and evaluated our approach on several large public databases from physioBank, which showed an overall accu- racy of 95.2% for sleep stage scoring and 94.5% for classify- ing minutes as apneic or non-apneic.

Mg-Y-Zn-Al alloys processed by rapidly solidified ribbon consolidation(RSRC)technique exhibit an exceptional mechanical performance indicating promising application *** material has a bimodal microstructure consisting of fine recrystallized and coarse non-recrystallized grains with solute-rich stacking faults forming cluster arranged layers(CALs)and nanoplates(CANaps),or complete long period stacking ordered(LpSO)*** order to reveal the deformation mechanisms,in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction line profile analysis was employed for a detailed study of the dislocation arrangement created during tension in Mg-0.9%Zn-2.05%Y-0.15%Al(at%)*** uncovering the effect of the initial microstructure on the mechanical performance,additional samples were obtained by annealing of the as-consolidated specimen at 300 and 400℃ for 2 *** heat treatment at 300℃ had no significant effect on the initial microstructure,its evolution during tension and,thus,the overall deformation behavior under tensile *** the other hand,annealing at 400℃ resulted in a significant increase of the recrystallized grains fraction and a decrease of the dislocation density,leading to only minor degradation of the mechanical *** maximum dislocation density at the failure of the samples corresponding to the plastic strain of 10-25% was estimated to be about 16-20×10^(14)m^(-2).The diffraction profile analysis indicated that most dislocations formed during tension were of non-basal and pyramidal types,what was also in agreement with the Schmid factor values revealed independently from orientation *** was also shown that the dislocation-induced Taylor hardening was much lower below the plastic strain of 3% than above this value,which was explained by a model of the interaction between prismatic dislocations and CANaps/LpSO plates.
