Fluorescent centres in silicon have recently attracted great interest,owing to their remarkable properties for quantum ***,we demonstrate that the C-centre in silicon can realise an optically readable quantum register in the L-band wavelength region where the transmission losses in commercial optical fibres are *** in-depth theoretical characterisation confirms the assignment of the C-centre to the carbon-oxygen interstitial pair *** further explore its magneto-optical properties,such as hyperfine and spin-orbit coupling constants from first principles calculations,which are crucial for tight control of the quantum states of the triplet electron *** on this data,we set up quantum optics protocols to initialise and read out the quantum states of the electron spin,and realise a quantum memory by transferring quantum information from the electron spin to proximate ^(29)Si nuclear *** findings establish an optically readable long-living quantum memory in silicon where the scalability of qubits may be achieved by CMOS-compatible technology.

Graphene has many advantageous properties,but its lack of an electronic band gap makes this two-dimensional material impractical for many nanoelectronic applications,for example,field-effect *** problem can be circumvented by opening up a confinement-induced gap,through the patterning of graphene into ribbons having widths of a few *** electronic properties of such ribbons depend on both their size and the crystallographic orientation of the ribbon ***,etching processes that are able to differentiate between the zigzag and armchair type edge terminations of graphene are highly sought *** this contribution we show that such an anisotropic,dry etching reaction is possible and we use it to obtain graphene ribbons with zigzag *** demonstrate that the starting positions for the carbon removal reaction can be tailored at will with precision.

Topological materials host robust properties,unaffected by microscopic perturbations,owing to the global topological properties of the bulk electron *** in which the topological invariant can be changed by easily tuning external parameters are especially sought *** pentatelluride(ZrTe_(5))is one of a few experimentally available materials that reside close to the boundary of a topological phase transition,allowing the switching of its invariant by mechanical ***,we unambiguously identify a topological insulator–metal transition as a function of strain,by a combination of ab initio calculations and direct measurements of the local charge *** model quantitatively describes the response to complex strain patterns found in bubbles of few layer ZrTe_(5) without fitting parameters,reproducing the mechanical deformation-dependent closing of the band gap observed using scanning tunneling *** calculate the topological phase diagram of ZrTe_(5) and identify the phase at equilibrium,enabling the design of device architectures,which exploit the topological switching characteristics of the system.

Mg-Y-Zn-Al alloys processed by rapidly solidified ribbon consolidation(RSRC)technique exhibit an exceptional mechanical performance indicating promising application *** material has a bimodal microstructure consisting of fine recrystallized and coarse non-recrystallized grains with solute-rich stacking faults forming cluster arranged layers(CALs)and nanoplates(CANaps),or complete long period stacking ordered(LpSO)*** order to reveal the deformation mechanisms,in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction line profile analysis was employed for a detailed study of the dislocation arrangement created during tension in Mg-0.9%Zn-2.05%Y-0.15%Al(at%)*** uncovering the effect of the initial microstructure on the mechanical performance,additional samples were obtained by annealing of the as-consolidated specimen at 300 and 400℃ for 2 *** heat treatment at 300℃ had no significant effect on the initial microstructure,its evolution during tension and,thus,the overall deformation behavior under tensile *** the other hand,annealing at 400℃ resulted in a significant increase of the recrystallized grains fraction and a decrease of the dislocation density,leading to only minor degradation of the mechanical *** maximum dislocation density at the failure of the samples corresponding to the plastic strain of 10-25% was estimated to be about 16-20×10^(14)m^(-2).The diffraction profile analysis indicated that most dislocations formed during tension were of non-basal and pyramidal types,what was also in agreement with the Schmid factor values revealed independently from orientation *** was also shown that the dislocation-induced Taylor hardening was much lower below the plastic strain of 3% than above this value,which was explained by a model of the interaction between prismatic dislocations and CANaps/LpSO plates.

Chronic kidney disease severely deteriorates the outcome of gastrointestinal bleeding: A meta-analysis

AIM To understand the influence of chronic kidney disease(CKD) on mortality, need for transfusion and rebleeding in gastrointestinal(GI) bleeding *** A systematic search was conducted in three databases for studies on GI bleeding patients with CKD or endstage renal disease(ESRD) with data on outcomes of mortality, transfusion requirement, rebleeding rate and length of hospitalization(LOh). Calculations were performed with Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software using the random effects model. heterogeneity was tested by using Cochrane's Q and I2 statistics. Mean difference(MD) and OR(odds ratio) were ***1063 articles(EMBASE: 589; pubM ed: 459; Cochrane: 15) were found in total. 5 retrospective articles and 1 prospective study were available for analysis. These 6 articles contained data on 406035 patients, of whom 51315 had impaired renal function. The analysis showed a higher mortality in the CKD group(OR = 1.786, 95%CI: 1.689-1.888, p he ESRD group(OR = 2.530, 95%CI: 1.386-4.616, p = 0.002), and a rebleeding rate(OR = 2.510, 95%CI: 1.521-4.144, p patients with impaired renal function. CKD patients required more unit red blood cell transfusion(MD = 1.863, 95%CI: 0.812-2.915, p pent more time in hospital(MD = 13.245, 95%CI: 6.886-19.623, p han the *** ESRD increases mortality, need for transfusion, rebleeding rate and LOh among GI bleeding patients. prospective patient registries and observational clinical trials are crucially needed.

pharmaceutical co-crystals have been explored by many researchers as a strategy to optimize physicochemical properties of solid-state *** improvements of solubility,bioavailability,and the reduced tendency for phase transformation occurrence,are factors that highlight benefits of pharmaceutical co-crystals among other solid *** to the Biopharmaceutical Classification System(BCS),non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs)are class Ⅱ drugs,which have low aqueous solubility and therefore co-crystallization has the potential to optimize NSAID product *** this review,we highlight the recent progress made on NSAIDs co-crystals,their co-formers,synthesis,methods and use,while we underline some promising results on in vitro and in vivo co-crystal properties.A celecoxib-tramadol co-crystal reaches phase Ⅲ clinical trials,showing greater analgesic activity than both individual *** aqueous solubility of the co-crystal formed between l-proline and diclofenac is very high in comparison with the pure *** co-crystals with urea and thiourea have an increase of drug release of almost 60%.Co-crystal design brings a new perspective in drug development since the co-former used can also be a biologically active component allowing to combine different anti-inflammatory drugs,which have an incredible spectrum of application due to the analgesic,anti-pyretic and anti-inflammatory properties.

BACKGROUND Obesity rates have increased sharply in recent decades. As there is a growing number of cases in which acute pancreatitis(Ap) is accompanied by obesity, we found it clinically relevant to investigate how body-mass index(BMI) affects the outcome of the *** To quantify the association between subgroups of BMI and the severity and mortality of *** A meta-analysis was performed using the preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis(pRISMA) protocols. Three databases(pubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library) were searched for articles containing data on BMI, disease severity and mortality rate for Ap. Englishlanguage studies from inception to 19 June 2017 were checked against our predetermined eligibility criteria. The included articles reported all Ap cases with no restriction on the etiology of the disease. Only studies that classified Ap cases according to the Atlanta Criteria were involved in the severity analyses. Odds ratios(OR) and mean differences(MD) were pooled using the random effects model with the DerSimonian-Laird estimation and displayed on forest plots. The meta-analysis was registered in pROSpERO under number *** A total of 19 articles were included in our meta-analysis containing data on 9997 patients. As regards severity, a subgroup analysis showed a direct association between Ap severity and BMI. BMI had no significant effect on severity;however, BMI > 25 had an almost three-fold increased risk for severe Ap in comparison to normal BMI(OR = 2.87, 95%CI: 1.90-4.35, p portantly,the mean BMI of patients with severe Ap is higher than that of the non-severe group(MD = 1.79, 95%CI: 0.89-2.70, p h rates among Ap patients are the highest in the underweight and obese subgroups.
