The recognition of p-glucans by dectin-1 has been shown to mediate cell activation, cytokine production and a variety of antifungal responses. Here, we report that the functional activity of dectin-1 in mucosal immunity to Candida albicans is influenced by the genetic background of the host. Dectin-1 was required for the proper control of gastrointestinal and vaginal candidiasis in C57BIJ6, but not BALB/c mice; in fact, the latter showed increased resistance in the absence of dectin-1. The susceptibility of dectin-l-deficient C57BL/6 mice to infection was associated with defects in IL-17A and aryl hydrocarbon receptor-dependent IL-22 production and in adaptive Th I responses. In contrast, the resistance of dectin- 1-deficient BALB/c mice was associated with increased IL-17A and IL-22 production and the skewing towards Thl/Treg immune responses that provide immunological memory. Disparate canonical/ noncanonical NF-KB signaling pathways downstream of dectin-1 were activated in the two different mouse strains. Thus, the net activity of dectin-1 in antifungal mucosal immunity is dependent on the host＇s genetic background, which affects both the innate cytokine production and the adaptive Th1/Th17 cell activation upon dectin-1 signaling.

purpose: The present study aimed to investigate the reliability of the non-exhaustive double effort(NEDE) test in running exercise and its associations with the ventilatory thresholds(VT_1 and VT_2) and the maximal lactate steady state(MLSS).Methods: Ten healthy male adults(age: 23 ± 4 years, height: 176.6 ± 6.4 cm, body mass: 76.6 ± 10.7 kg) performed 4 procedures:(1) a ramp test for VT_1 and VT_2 determinations measured by ratio of expired ventilation to O_2 uptake(VE/VO_2) and expired ventilation to CO_2 output(VE/VCO_2) equivalents, respectively;(2) the NEDE test measured by blood lactate concentration(NEDE_(LAC)) and heart rate responses(NEDE_(HR));(3) a retest of NEDE for reliability analysis; and(4) continuous efforts to determine the MLSS intensity. The NEDE test consisted of4 sessions at different running intensities. Each session was characterized by double efforts at the same running velocity(E1 and E2, 180 s), separated by a passive recovery period(90 s rest). LAC and HR values after E1 and E2(in 4 sessions) were used to estimate the intensity equivalent to"null delta" by linear fit. This parameter represents, theoretically, the intensity equivalent to maximal aerobic ***: The intraclass correlation coefficient indicated significant reliability for NEDE_(LAC)(0.93) and NEDE_(HR)(0.79)(both p predicted by NEDE_(LAC)(10.1 ± 1.9 km/h) and NEDE_(HR)(9.8 ± 2.0 km/h) to VT_1(10.2 ± 1.1 km/h). In addition, despite significantly lower MLSS intensity(12.2 ± 1.2 km/h), NEDE_(LAC) and NEDE_(HR) intensities were highly correlated with this parameter(0.90 and 0.88, respectively).Conclusion: The NEDE test applied to running exercise is reliable and estimates the VT_1 intensity. Additionally, NEDE intensities were lower but still correlated with VT_2 and MLSS.

Auriculotherapy consists of physical stimuli applied to the outer ear and is commonly associated with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The authors present and discuss the development of a course that offers a semi-on-site auriculotherapy course for Brazilian primary health care (pHC) professionals. The course was funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Health and developed at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in 2015 by a team of experts in auriculotherapy. It consisted of 75 h of distance learning (five sequential modules) and 5 h of on-site learning. The modules included the following items:(1) introduction to integrative practices;(2) ear reflexology;(3) introduction to TCM;(4) biomedical view of auriculotherapy;and (5) auriculotherapy in pHC. The teaching material in eluded a workbook for each module, 14 video lectures and an interactive ear(on line resource) to study location and application to the main auricular points. The on-site lectures follow a structured script of ear palpation techniques, auricular seed insertion practice and clinical case discussions, under the supervision of trained instructors. The course was offered in 2016 and 2017 and on-site lectures took place in 25 cities, covering all Brazilian regions, in coordination with municipal or state boards of health. A total of 4273 health professionals concluded the training and their evaluation of the course was highly positive. The Brazilian experience of large-scale training shows the potential to disseminate auriculotherapy in the context of pHC, given that its practice is fast, easy to learn, safe, effective for different health problems and well accepted by the patients.

Remoras are commensal fish of various marine species,such as sharks,swordfishes,turtles,dolphins,manta rays and *** specimen of marlin sucker Remora osteochir was evaluated using computed tomography for skeletal digital reconstruction,digital radiology for general evaluation and bone counting,and the double contrast technique to distinguish coelomic *** radiographic images,it was possible to observe otoliths in the center of the neurocranium,to count 27 vertebrae,nine pairs of ribs,and to detect the presence of the hipural and epural bones near of the caudal *** double contrast images,it was possible to visualize the swim bladder,gills,heart,liver,stomach and *** the tomographic images and reconstructions,it was possible to identify the intercalar bones of the cephalic disc;the spine with vertebral bodies composed of neural arches and ventral ribs;and the pectoral girdle formed by posttemporal,cleithrum and scapulocoracoid *** was concluded that digital radiology and computed tomography were able to describe anatomical structures of marlin sucker *** without the need for dissection.

Root rots of cotton, soybean and common bean caused by Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium rolfsii are basically soil-borne diseases and are difficult to control through the use of fungicides. One of the alternatives to control these diseases could be through the induction of Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR). It is believed that shale water as a by-product obtained during the process of extraction of petroleum from fossil rock may act as an inducer of SAR to some pathogens of some crop.p.ants. The objective of the present investigation was to verify the effect of seed treatment with shale water in inducing SAR to R. solani and S. rofsii root rots of cotton, soybean and common bean. Seed treatment experiments were conducted in the greenhouse on seedlings of these three crops using naturally or artificially infested soil with R. solani or with S. rolfsii. Treatments with seeds treated with shale water significantly reduced the average number of plants infected with the two pathogens. Consistent results were obtained in repeated experiments. SAR in cotton and common bean to R. solani varied between 86.16% and 91.13%, while for S. rolfsii in soybean and common bean varied between 84.0% and 57.54% and was long lasting. This is the first report giving strong indication of SAR of the three crops to R. solani and to S. rolfsii. patent regarding this investigation is obtained with petrobras, Brazil, under the number IVp 12/039.

The response of an optical strain sensor based on the fiber Bragg grating is theoretically analyzed with a different approach of that found usually in the literature. In this model, geometrical changes suffered by the grating itself are taken into account. The results are compared with those from experiments, showing very good agreement.
