Inference of Fish Community Assembly in Intermittent Rivers Using Joint Species Distribution Models and Trophic Guilds

Mechanisms that drive species co-occurrence are poorly documented for intermittent rivers of semiarid regions. Here, we investigated fish community assembly in response to habitat types and physicochemical conditions in intermittent rivers of the lower Okavango Delta, Botswana. Using Joint Species Distribution Models, we inferred relative influences of environmental filtering and species interactions on patterns of species co-occurrence. Fishes were surveyed from multiple locations during drought and flood phases of the annual hydrological cycle. Species were classified into trophic guilds to facilitate inference about the types of species interactions that influence community structure. Water physicochemistry (depth, temperature, and dissolved oxygen concentration) was significantly associated with species distributions, whereas habitat type (ephemeral vs. permanent) was not significantly associated with species distribution. Controlling for the influence of environmental covariates resulted in three negative residual correlations, of which two involved non-predatory fishes from different trophic guilds, suggesting a behavioral selection of, or enhanced survival within, habitats with different environmental conditions. There was a negative residual correlation between a predator and a potential prey species, suggesting a role for predation mortality or threat in species segregation. Our results demonstrate that using trophic guilds in conjunction with JSDMs can enhance inferences about mechanisms of community assembly.

The main purpose of this p.p.r was to examine female roles portrayed by advertising. More specifically, the questions that motivated this research project were ＂What messages about women have been given to society through advertisement？＂ and ＂Have these portrayals been changed during the past decades？＂ The study consisted of a systematic content analysis of Brazilian commercials from 1973 to 2000. The p.p.lation from which this sample was drawn consisted of Brazilian commercials which got an award in international and national festivals. A probabilistic sample procedure was employed. Ninety five pieces were selected. The categories and operational rules used in the study were developed based on previous research. This study has proposed that female images in advertising are depicted in three different ways： stereotyped, idealized, and plural portrayals. Our results have revealed that some specific images have changed, however, they continued to be stereotyped and idealized.

Cancer is a global problem that in addition to physical, emotional and physiological causes economic and social impacts. The p53 gene is a tumor suppressor gene found in many malignant and benign tumors;this has the primary function of keeping cells at rest after damaging to DNA. The p53 acts in the maintenance of cellular homeostasis, mainly through autophagy, playing a role in cell cycle arrest, when necessary, thus avoiding mutated DNA replication. When in the oncogenic environment in many cases it is mutated, losing much of its efficiency allowing tumor development. Studies show that exercise can in the regular part of its pro-autophagic function even in the oncology setting. Stimuli of moderate-intensity aerobic and predominance of submaximal seem to trigger the protective function of p53 in various cancer settings. Among the many changes that these pathology triggers were the objective of this mini review is to relate the changes that exercise generates in p53 protein functions and their possible influence on tumor cells.

Brazil is the largest consumer of pesticides worldwide. public health studies in Brazil show that inadequate use of pesticides increases the incidence of accidents and contamination of poor rural communities. This study sought to identify factors that determine the occurrence of problems with pesticides in a typical Brazilian land reform settlement. The study was carried out in Caiaponia, Goias state. In the empirical analysis, the econometric model pro bit was used. The dependent variable was the existence of health problems in the family setting that are caused by pesticides. The independent variables were the family size; the attendance to any church, whether Catholic or protestant; if farmers received any technical assistance; the current health condition of the family, and if there are exacerbated erosion problems on the farm. Data from 28 farmers were collected through a structured questionnaire. Among the main findings, larger families have a higher probability of accidents involving pesticides. The current healthy conditions of family and the problems of soiled gradation in the farm imply are duction in the likelihood of contamination with pesticides. These two results indicate that rural households that have good health condition and have experienced environmental degradation on their farm have higher environmental awareness.

AIM： To measure circulating angiotensins at different stages of human cirrhosis and to further evaluate a possible relationship between renin angiotensin system （RAS） components and hemodynamic changes. METHODS： patients were allocated into 4 groups： mild-to-moderate liver disease （MLD）, advanced liver disease （ALD）, patients undergoing liver transplantation, and healthy controls. Blood was collected to determine plasma renin activity （pRA）, angiotensin （Ang） Ⅰ, Ang Ⅱ, and Ang-（1-7） levels using radioimmunoassays. During liver transplantation, hemodynamic parameters were determined and blood was simultaneously obtained from the portal vein and radial artery in order to measure RAS components. RESULTS： pRA and angiotensins were elevated in ALD when compared to MLD and controls （p 〈 0.05）. In contrast, Ang Ⅱ was significantly reduced in MLD. Ang-（1-7）/Ang Ⅱ ratios were increased in MLD when compared to controls and ALD. During transplantation, Ang Ⅱ levels were lower and Ang-（1-7）/Ang Ⅱ ratios were higher in the splanchnic circulation than in the peripheral circulation （0.52 ± 0.08 vs 0.38 ±0.04, p 〈 0.02）, whereas the peripheral circulating Ang Ⅱ/Ang Ⅰ ratio was elevated in comparison to splanchnic levels （0.18 ±0.02 vs 0.13 ±0.02, p 〈 0.04）. Ang-（1-7）/ Ang Ⅱ ratios positively correlated with cardiac output （r = 0.66） and negatively correlated with systemic vascular resistance （r = -0.70）. CONCLUSION： Our findings suggest that the relationship between Ang-（1-7） and Ang Ⅱ may play a role in the hemodynamic changes of human cirrhosis.

The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of estimating evapotranspiration (ET) using the FAO-56 penman-Monteith (FAO-56-pM) model, with measured and estimated net radiation (Rnmeasured and Rnestimated, respectively), the latter obtained via five different models. We used meteorological data collected between August 2005 and June 2008, on a daily basis and on a seasonal basis (wet vs. dry seasons). The following data were collected: temperature;relative humidity;global global solar radiation (Rs);wind speed and soil heat flux. The atmospheric pressure was determined by aneroid barograph, and sunshine duration was quantified with a Campbell-Stokes recorder. In addition to the sensor readings (Rnmeasured), five different models were used in order to obtain the Rnestimated. Four of those models consider the effects of cloud cover: the original Brunt model;the FAO-24 model for wet climates;the FAO-24 model for dry climates, and the FAO-56 model. The fifth was a linear regression model based on Rs. In estimating the daily ET0 with the FAO-56-pM model, Rnmeasured can be replaced by Rnestimated, in accordance with the FAO-24 model for dry climates, with a relative error of 2.9%, or with the FAO-56 model, with an error of 4.9%, when Rs is measured, regardless of the season. The Rnestimated obtained with the fifth model has a relatively high error. The original Brunt model and FAO-24 model for wet climates performed more poorly than did the other models in estimating the Rn and ET0. In overcast conditions, the original Brunt model, the FAO-24 model for wet climates, the FAO-24 model for dry climates, the FAO-56 model and the model of linear regression with Rs as the predictor variable tended to overestimate Rn and ET, those estimates becoming progressively more accurate as the cloud cover diminished.

A 55-year-old White woman was first seen in July 1995 with ulceration of the oral mucosa, including the gingiva, labial mucosa, gums, palate and tongue, as well as erosions and blisters on the trunk. A biopsy showed a suprabasal blister with acantholysis. Direct immunofluorescence was positive for intercellular deposits of IgG and C3, and indirect immunofluorescence was positive for intercellular antibodies at a titer of 160. The patient was diagnosed as having pemphigus vulgaris and treated with prednisone 1-1.5 mg/kg/day from 1995 until 1998, but no response was observed (the disease continued to be active with the formation of new lesions. The patent develoyd a number of steroid-complications including diabetes, osteoporosis, Cushing syndrome, hypertension and high-output cardiac failure, and required repeated hospitalization. In August 1998 she was started on azathioprine 100-150 mg/day and continued on prednisone 1 mg/kg/day. One year later, in August 1999, the disease was still active with new lesion formation and persistent oral erosions and dysphagia, despite persistent therapywith azathioprine 150 mg/day and prednisone 1mg/kg/day. Because of the disease severity and the lack of a reponse to treatment, in October 1999 the patient was started on thalidomide therapy 100 mg/day (1.7 mg/kg/day) and continued the prednisone treatment at 1 mg/kg /day together with azathioprine 150 mg/day (2.7 mg/kg/day). There was a good response, with clearing of all oral lesions in 20 days. The prednisone dose was gradually reduced and was discontinued in May 2000; azathioprine was gradually reduced to 50 mg 3 times/week (0.35 mg/kg/day). Thalidomide was continued at a dose of 100 mg/day. The patient was in total clinical remission, being free of both old and new lesions, for the next 14 months, when the thalidomide treatmentwas discontinued as a result of side-effects, including weakness in the legs and paresthesis of the fingers.
