A laboratory study was carried out on both natural and compacted specimens to investigate the complex soil-water interaction in an unsaturated expansive clay. The laboratory study includes the measurement of soil-water characteristic curves, 1D free swelling tests, measurement of swelling pressure and shrinkage tests. The test results revealed that the air-entry value of the natural specimen was quite low due to cracks and fissures present. The hydraulic hysteresis of the natural specimen was relatively insignificant as compared with the compacted specimen. Within a suction range 0 to 500 kpa, a bilinear relationship between free swelling strain (or swelling pressure) and initial soil suction was observed for both the natural and compacted specimens. As a result of over-consolidation and secondary structures such as cementation and cracks, the natural specimens exhibited significant lower swelling (or swelling pressure) than the compacted specimen. The change of matric suction exerts a more significant effect on the water phase than on the soil skeleton for this expansive clay.

1FGL J1018.6–5856 is a high mass gamma-ray binary containing a compact object orbiting around a massive star with a period of 16.544 *** the compact object is a pulsar,non-thermal emissions are likely produced by electrons accelerated at the termination shock,and may also originate from the magnetosphere and the un-shocked wind of the *** this paper,we investigate the non-thermal emissions from the wind and the shock with different viewing geometries and study the multi-wavelength emissions from 1FGL J1018.6–*** present the analysis results of the Fermi/LAT using nearly 10 years of *** phase-resolved spectra indicate that the Ge V emissions comprise a rather steady component that does not vary with orbital motion and a modulated component that shows flux maximum around inferior *** ke V/Te V light curves of 1FGL J1018.6–5856 also exhibit a sharp peak around inferior conjunction,which are attributed to the boosted emission from the shock,while the broad sinusoidal modulations could be originating from the deflected shock tail at a larger *** modulations of Ge V flux are likely caused by the boosted synchrotron emission from the shock and the IC emission from the unshocked pulsar wind,while the steady component comes from the outer gap of the pulsar ***,we discuss the similarities and differences of 1FGL J1018.6–5856 with other binaries,like LS 5039.

previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of a novel three-layer landfill cover system constructed with recycled concrete aggregates(RCAs)without geomembrane in both laboratory and ***,no systematic investigation has been carried out to optimize the combination of the particle sizes for fine-grained RCAs(FRC)and coarse-grained RCAs(CRC)that can be used for the three-layer landfill cover *** aim of this paper is to assist engineers in designing the three-layer landfill cover system under a rainfall of 100-year return period in humid climate conditions using an easily controlled soil parameter D10 of *** numerical study reveals that when D10 of FRC increases from 0.05 mm to 0.16 mm,its saturated permeability increases by 10 *** a result,a larger amount of rainwater infiltrates into the cover system,causing a higher lateral diversion in both the top FRC and middle CRC *** further changes in the lateral diversion are observed when the D10 value of FRC is larger than 0.16 *** the particle sizes of FRC and CRC layers are shown to have a minor influence on the percolation under the extreme rainfall *** implies that the selection of particle sizes for the FRC and CRC layers can be based on the availability of *** it is well known that the bottom layer of the cover system should be constructed with very fine-grained soils if possible,this study provides an upper limit to the particle size that can be used in the bottom layer(D10 not larger than 0.02 mm).With this limit,the three-layer system can still minimize the water percolation to meet the design criterion(30 mm/yr)even under a 100-year return period of rainfall in humid climates.

The ammonia electrolysis is a highly efficient and energy-saving method for ultra-pure hydrogen generation, which highly relies on electrocatalytic performance of electrocatalysts. In this work, high-quality platinum(pt) nanocubes(pt-NCs) with 4.5 nm size are achieved by facile hydrothermal synthesis. The physical morphology and structure of pt-NCs are exhaustively characterized, revealing that pt-NCs with special {100} facets have excellent uniformity, good dispersity and high crystallinity. Meanwhile, the electrocatalytic performance of pt-NCs for ammonia electrolysis are carefully investigated in alkaline solutions, which display outstanding electroactivity and stability for both ammonia electrooxidation reaction(AEOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) in KOH solution. Furthermore, a symmetric pt-NCs||pt-NCs ammonia electrolyzer based on bifunctional pt-NCs electrocatalyst is constructed, which only requires 0.68 V electrolysis voltage for hydrogen generation. Additionally, the symmetric pt-NCs||pt-NCs ammonia electrolyzer has excellent reversible switch capability for AEOR at anode and HER at cathode, showing outstanding alternating operation ability for ammonia electrolysis.
