Soil emissivity of Arctic regions is a key parameter for assessing surface properties from microwave brightness temperature(Tb)*** in winter,frozen soil permittivity and roughness are two poorly characterized unknowns that must be ***,we show that after removing snow,the 3D soil roughness can be accurately inferred from in-situ photogrammetry using Structure from Motion(SfM).We focus on using SfM techniques to provide accurate roughness measurements and improve emissivity models parametrization of frozen arctic soil for microwave *** was performed from ground-based radiometric measurements at 19 and 37 GHz using three different soil emission models:the Wegmüller and Mätzler[1999,TGRS]model(Weg99),the Wang and Choudhury[1981,JGR]model(QNH),and a geometrical optics model(Geo Optics).Measured and simulated brightness temperatures over different tundra and rock sites in the Canadian High Arctic show that Weg99,parametrized with SfM-based roughness and optimized permittivity(1),yielded an RMSE of 3.1 K(R2=0.71)for all frequencies and *** SfM based approach allowed us to measure roughness with 0.1 mm accuracy at 55 locations of different land cover type using a digital camera and metal plates of know dimensions.

Aim: To study the secretory activity and androgen regulation of glutathione peroxidase (Gpx) in epithelial cell cultures from human epididymis. Methods: Tissue was obtained from patients undergoing therapeutic orchidectomy for prostatic cancer. Epithelial cell cultures were obtained from the caput, corpus and cauda epididymides. Enzymatic activity was measured in conditioned media by colorimetric methods in absence or presence of 1, 10 or 100 nrnoI.L^(-1) testosterone. The effect of 1 μmol.L^(-1) flutamide was also evaluated. Results: Gpx activity was higher in cultures from corpus and cauda than caput epididymidis. The presence of different concentrations of testosterone increase enzyme activity in cell cultures from all epididymal regions. Addition of flutamide reverses the androgen dependent increase of Gpx activity. Conclusion: Gpx activity is secreted from human epididymal cells in a region dependent manner and is regulated by androgens.

The lifetimes of a decays of the recently produced isotopes of the elements 112, 114, 116 and the element ^294118 and of some decay products have been calculated theoretically within the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation. The a decay barriers have been determined in the quasimolecular shape path within a generalized liquid drop model including the proximity effects between nuclei in a neck, the mass and charge asymmetry and the precise nuclear radius. These calculations provide reasonable estimates for the observed a decay lifetimes. The calculated results have been compared with the results of the density-dependent M3Y effective interaction and the experimental data. It is indicated that the theoretical foundation of the generalized liquid drop model is as good as that of the microscopic DDM3Y model, at least in the sense of predicting the T1/2 values as long as one uses a correct a decay energy. The half lives of these new nuclei are well tested from the consistence of the macroscopic, the microscopic and the experimental data.

Dear Editor, In its latest edition, the World Health Organization （WHO） provides guidelines regarding the standardization of techniques for the measurement of sperm concentrationI and recommends use of a 100 μm-deep hemocytometer. However, these instructions are not always followed correctly.2 Furthermore, although hemocytometers provide more accurate and consistent results, they present several drawbacks： the chamber must be properly assembled prior to its use so as to ensure that the counts are correct and it needs to be cleaned thoroughly to remove all traces of sperm, which risks breaking the glass coverslip.

The aim of this work was to determine the structural characteristics of the condensed tannins isolated from the aqueous extract of black spruce (picea mariana Mill) bark. This is the first report on the structural characterization of condensed tannins from black spruce bark. The condensed tannins from the hot water extract prepared from picea mariana bark were isolated by column chromatography on Sephadex LH-20 media. In this study, UV-visible and 13C-NMR spectroscopic techniques, along with pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (py-GC/MS) and liquid chromatogramphy analyses were applied to determine the structural characteristics of black spruce bark tannins. We have confirmed for the first time the presence of methoxylated B-rings in the flavanol units of condensed tannins from black spruce bark, which could be regarded as further contribution to the chemotaxonomy of the genus picea. The methoxylation of Norway spruce bark condensed tannins have been demonstrated previously.
