The-Seychelles Bank and Madagascar Shelf in the western Indian Ocean were explored geologically during a cruise of the R/V "professor Shtokman" in 1986. Using the data of relief, sediment characteristics and their sequences of strata, paleogeographic maps (18,000 a B.p.) of these areas were produced. These maps show that the Bank and the Shelf are carbonate platforms with complicated topography. The data indicate an important role of sea level oscillation in relief development of this area.

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 set seven global targets of which the first two targets are to reduce disaster deaths(target A) and diminish the number of affected people globally(target B)by *** realize these targets,the United Nations General Assembly’s expert Working Group provided indicators to measure progress as well as terminologies for these targets in *** around these targets is *** article contributes to the understanding of the targets by exploring:(1) what are the conditions that may hinder achieving targets,as well as those that may accelerate their achievement at the national and local levels;and(2) which types of organizations should lead a country’s effort to reduce disaster deaths?These questions were answered by opinion survey research carried out at the Sixth Session of the Global platform for Disaster Risk *** participants identified disaster risk reduction efforts,early warning systems,awareness,finance and investment(among others) as the important facilitating factors to achieve targets A and *** investment in human security,lack of response and coordination,uncertainty of climate change,poor information,lack of campaigns and low budget allocation(among others) are considered as the important hindering factors for these targets by the *** findings also suggest that the facilitating and hindering variables of targets A and B are interconnected with global target e(disaster risk governance and capacity building).The majority of the participants thought that it is the national government who should lead in a country’s effort to reduce disaster *** on these findings,a few recommendations have been made to improve policy and practice related to the indicators as well as to reimagine theories so that targets A and B can be realized in alignment with target e at the national and local levels by 2030.

Irisin is a myokine that is generated by cleavage of the membrane protein fibronectin type Ⅲ domain-containing protein 5(FNDC5) in response to physical exercise. Studies reveal that irisin/FNDC5 has neuroprotective functions against Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia in the elderly, by improving cognitive function and reducing amyloid-β and tau pathologies as well as neuroinflammation in cell culture or animal models of Alzheimer's disease. Although current and ongoing studies on irisin/FNDC5 show promising results, further mechanistic studies are required to clarify its potential as a meaningful therapeutic target for alleviating Alzheimer's disease. We recently found that irisin treatment reduces amyloid-β pathology by increasing the activity/levels of amyloid-β-degrading enzyme neprilysin secreted from astrocytes. Herein, we present an overview of irisin/FNDC5's protective roles and mechanisms against Alzheimer's disease.

Influence of Deposition Conditions on the Crystal Structure of MoS_2 Coating

MoS2 coatings were prepared using an unbalanced bipolar pulsed DC （direct current） magnetron sputtering apparatus under different targets, cathode current densities, power modes and bias voltages. The morphology, structure and growth characteristics of MoS2 coatings were observed and identified respectively by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry and mass spectrometry. The results show that MoS2 coatings evolve with the （002） basal plane parallel to the surface by using cold pressed target with lower density, lower cathodic current density, bipolar pulse DC power and minus bias voltage, whereas the coatings deposited under hot pressed target, higher cathodic current density, simple DC power and positive bias voltage have the （002） basal plane perpendicular to the surface. The influence of deposition conditions on the crystal structure of MoS2 coating is implemented by altering its growth rate and the energy of sputtering-deposition particles.

Background:Resistance exercise has numerous,well-documented benefits on the health and functional performance of older ***,little information exists on the affective responses to resistance exercise in this *** affective responses can predict continued exercise behavior,examining if and how they differ between resistance exercise intensities and frequencies in older adults may provide important data to improve resistance exercise ***:We monitored the affective responses of older adults when performing high-velocity,low-load(HVll)or low-velocity,high-load(lVHl)resistance exercise once or twice weekly.A total of 40 moderately to highly active,but resistance-exercise naïve,older adults(60-79 years)completed 1 of 4 randomly assigned progressive resistance exercise conditions:HVll once weekly(HVll1:n=10),HVll twice weekly(HVll2:n=10),lVHl once weekly(lVHl1:n=10),or lVHl twice weekly(lVHl2:n=10).The physical Activity Affect Scale,Felt Arousal Scale,Feeling Scale,rating of perceived exertion,Visual Analog Scale,and the physical Activity enjoyment Scale were used to assess enjoyment and affective ***:The results from physical Activity enjoyment Scale(out of 35)suggest that all exercise conditions were largely and similarly enjoyable to older adults(HVll1:30.9±2.4;lVHl1:31.9±3.6;HVll2:30.9±3.5;lVHl2:30.2±3.7)despite greater fatigue(p=0.033;ηp^2p=0.22)and perceived workload(p=0.042;ηp^2=0.20)in lVHl(results from Visual Analog Scale).Conclusion:Moderately to highly physically active older adults may tolerate higher intensities of resistance exercise performed once or twice weekly without experiencing a negative impact on ***,the role that supervision and social interaction played in shaping the participants’responses is unclear.

Superconducting materials with high critical temperature have the potential to revolutionize many fields,including military,electronic communications,and power ***,scientists around the world have been tirelessly working with the ultimate goal of achieving high-temperature *** 2023,a preprint by lee et *** South Korea claimed the discovery of ultra-high-temperature superconductivity with a critical temperature of up to 423 K in Cu-doped lead-apatite(lK-99)(arXiv:2307.12008,arXiv:2307.12037),which caused a worldwide sensation and ***,the electronic structures,phonon dynamics,and electrical conductivities of lK-99 and its parent compound lead-apatite have been calculated using first-principles *** results show that the lead-apatite compound and the lK-99 compound are insulator and half-metal *** flat band characteristic is consistent with previous *** electrical conductivity of the lK-99 compound shows two extreme points,and the electrical conductivity along the C-axis increases significantly after 400 *** phonon dispersion spectra of the compounds were investigated,demonstrating their dynamic instability.

Within the last several decades,the scientific community has made substantial progress in elucidating the complex pathophysiology underlying spinal cord ***,despite the many advances using conventional mammalian models,both cellular and axonal regeneration following spinal cord injury have remained out of *** this sense,turning to non-mammalian,regenerative species presents a unique opportunity to identify pro-regenerative cues and chara cterize a spinal cord microenvironment permissive to *** the signaling pathways hypothesized to be dysregulated during spinal cord injury is the purinergic signaling *** addition to its well-known role as energy currency in cells,ATp and its metabolites are small molecule neurotransmitte rs that mediate many diverse cellular processes within the central nervous *** our unde rstanding of the roles of the purinergic system following spinal cord injury is limited,this signaling pathway has been implicated in all injury-induced secondary processes,including cellular death,inflammation,reactive gliosis,and neural *** that the purinergic system is also evolutionarily conserved between mammalian and non-mammalian species,comparisons of these roles may provide important insights into conditions responsible for recovery ***,we compare the secondary processes between key model species and the influence of purinergic signaling in each *** our understanding of this signaling system and pro-regenerative conditions continues to evolve,so does the potential for the development of novel therapeutic interventions for spinal cord injury.

The experiment was conducted during dry season of 2016 and 2017 at farmer's field of Kalapara Upazila of patuakhali district, Bangladesh to develop tools to reduce salinity impact in maize and to reduce salinity induced land degradation. There were five treatments in the experiment having three different color plastic mulch (blue, black and white) and rice straw mulch and a non mulch control (bare soil) treatment. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments white, blue and black plastic film mulch, and rice straw much had 149%, 109%, 78% and 25% grain yield increase in 2016, and 173%, 117%, 99% and 47% in 2017 over control, respectively. The white plastic mulch treatment had 4 ℃ and 3.5 ℃ higher temperature over rice straw mulch treatment and 2.0 ℃ higher than the control treatment in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The black plastic mulch had 0.2 and 1.0 ℃, and rice straw mulch had 2.0 and 1.5 ℃ lower temperature than control in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Use of plastic mulch significantly reduces electrical conductivity of soil. In non-mulch treatment sulfur content was extremely high;plastic mulch rather helps to decrease the excess availability of sulfur. The overall results suggest that use of plastic mulch would be a suitable tool for enhancing maize production maintaining good soil health in saline soils.

The Calabrian Arc subduction-rollback system hosts seismogenic faults capable of generating earthquakes exceeding magnitude *** earthquakes are the result of long-term geodynamic processes,documenting seismic activity during a sufficiently long time interval is of fundamental importance for hazard *** and historical data provide critical information on seismogenesis,but they cover time periods shorter than the recurrence times of large earthquakes,especially in areas with low deformation rates such as *** onshore paleoseismological studies are fundamental to compile earthquake catalogs,they are sometime affected by the relatively poor continuity of sedimentation in the subaerial *** this study we applied the paleoseismological approach to the submarine environment to reconstruct the record of high-energy sedimentary events triggered by seismic *** analyzed three gravity cores collected in disconnected sedimentary basins to reconstruct resedimentation processes during the Holocene,integrating inland information for a better assessment of tectonic activity and *** analyses of the sedimentary record constrained by radiometric dating allowed reconstructing event stratigraphy and linking resedimented deposits to specific *** and offshore data allow to identify large-magnitude earthquakes in the central Calabrian Arc subduction system during the Holocene,with inferred epicenters located either along normal faults onshore and/or related to the slab *** turbidite record reveals 20 major events during the last 10 ka,with sources including crustal faults in Calabria(***,Rossano and Cittanova faults).Analyses of sediment samples and high-resolution seismic reflection images allowed identification of different types of resedimented deposits during the last 30–50 *** basin-wide occurrence of three megaturbidites/homogenites suggests they are related to megatsunamis sourced by

A large number of unconventional investigations have been implemented, tested, and validated in the field of microgeophysics, with the aim being to solve specific diagnostic and/or monitoring problems regarding civil engineering and cultural heritage studies. The investigations were carried out using different tomographic 2D and 3D approaches as well as different energy sources, namely sonic, ultrasonic and electromagnetic （radar） waves, electric potential fields, and infrared thermography. Many efforts have been made to modify instruments and procedures in order to improve the resolution of the surveys as well as to greatly reduce the time of the measurements without any loss of information. The main new methodologies here discussed are the sonic imprint, the global tomographic traveltime, the electrical resistivity tomography, and the control of external films （patinas） grown on stone monuments. The results seem to be very promising and suggest that it is the moment to dedicate time and effort to this new branch of geophysics, so that these methodologies can be used even more to diagnose, monitor, and safeguard not only engineering buildings and large structures but also ancient monuments and cultural artifacts, like pottery, statues, etc..
