Dynamics of Nitrogen Sp.ciation in Horticultural Soils in Suburbs of Shanghai,China

Dissolved organic nitrogen （DON） rep.esents a significant p.ol of soluble nitrogen （N） in soil ecosystems. Soil samp.es under three different horticultural management p.actices were collected from the Xiaxiyang Organic Vegetable and Fruit Farm, Shanghai, China, to investigate the dynamics of N sp.ciation during 2 months of aerobic incubation, to comp.re the effects of different soils on the mineralization of ^14C-labeled amino acids and p.p.ides, and to determine which of the p.thways in the decomp.sition and subsequent ammonification and nitrification of organic N rep.esented a significant blockage in soil N sup.ly. The dynamics of N sp.ciation was found to be significantly affected by mineralization and immobilization. DON, total free amino acids, and NH^＋-N were maintained at very low levels and did not accumulate, whereas NO3^--N gradually accumulated in these soils. The conversion of insoluble organic N to low-molecular-weight （LMW） DON rep.esented a main constraint to N sup.ly, while conversions of LMW DON to NH4^＋-N and NH4^＋-N to NO3^--N did not. Free amino acids and p.p.ides were rap.dly mineralized in the soils by the microbial community and consequently did not accumulate in soil. Turnover rates of the additional amino acids and p.p.ides were soil-dep.ndent and generally followed the order of organic soil 〉 transitional soil 〉 conventional soil. The turnover of high-molecular-weight DON was very slow and rep.esented the major DON loss. Further studies are needed to investigate the p.thways and bottlenecks of organic N degradation.

The Quantougou(QTG) Fauna in central Lanzhou Basin is an imp.rtant late Mid-Miocene fauna on the northeastern Tibetan p.ateau margin,but its numerical age remains a matter of ***,we p.esent a new magnetostratigrap.ic record for a fluvio-lacustrine section to further constrain the age of the QTG *** suggest that the studied section sp.ns from p.larity chrons C5Cn.2n to C5 n.2n or C5 An.1n,with ages of ca.16.5 Ma to 10 Ma or 16.5 Ma to 12 *** QTG Fauna is located at the top.of p.larity chron C5r.3 r or C5 Ar.2 r,which corresp.nds to an age of 11.7 Ma or 12.8 Ma for the ***,the associated Myocricetodontinae(a subfamily of Gerbillidae,Rodentia) is suggested to have ap.eared in the Lanzhou Basin at 11.7 Ma or 12.8 Ma,which is the oldest Myocricetodontinae in East Asia but is still much younger than the ~20 Ma ap.earance of this subfamily in West and South *** age data sup.ort the interp.etation that East Asian Myocricetodontinae originated from South *** QTG fauna further suggest a dry and op.n grassland environment,which is consistent with global cooling after the Mid-Miocene Climatic Op.imum.

Cysteine-rich secretory p.otein-1 （CRISp.1） is a glycop.otein secreted by the ep.didymal ep.thelium. It is a member of a large family of p.oteins characterized by two conserved domains and a set of 16 conserved cysteine residues. In mammals, CRISp.1 inhibits sp.rm-egg fusion and can sup.ress sp.rm cap.citation. The molecular mechanism of action of the mammalian CRISp.p.oteins remains unknown, but certain non-mammalian CRISp.p.oteins can block ion channels. In the rat, CRISp.1 comp.ises two forms referred to as p.oteins D and E. Recent work in our laboratory demonstrates that the D form of CRISp.1 associates transiently with the sp.rm surface, whereas the E form binds tightly. When the sp.rmatozoa are washed, the E form of CRISp.1 p.rsists on the sp.rm surface after all D form has dissociated. Cross-linking studies demonstrate different p.otein-p.otein interaction p.tterns for D and E, although no binding p.rtners for either p.otein have yet been identified. Mass sp.ctrometric analyses revealed a p.tential p.st-translational modification on the E form that is not p.esent on the D form. This is the only discernable difference between p.oteins D and E, and p.esumably is resp.nsible for the difference in behavior of these two forms of rat CRISp. 1. These studies demonstrate that the more abundant D form interacts with sp.rmatozoa transiently, p.ssibly with a sp.cific recep.or on the sp.rm surface, consistent with a cap.citation-sup.ressing function during sp.rm transit and storage in the ep.didymis, and also confirm a tightly bound p.p.lation of the E form that could act in the female rep.oductive tract. （Asian J Androl 2007 July; 9： 508-514）

Looking at the history of ep.didymal research p.ovides a level of confidence in p.edictions of cause and effect that looking at the future cannot achieve. Thus, when one of us （Hamilton, 2002） wrote a short essay on the history of the testicular excurrent ducts it became fairly obvious that advances in understanding the ep.didymis followed advances in other fields, p.rticularly those that p.ovided new instrumentation to p.obe at ever finer levels of detail. Can this same theme lead to p.edictions about what will hap.en in ep.didymis research over the next century？

Ce-and La-dop.d p.lymetallic layered double hydroxides for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction p.rformance at high current density

p.lymetallic layered double hydroxides are p.omising cost-effective catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction(OER) due to their versatile anionic and cationic tunability. Nevertheless, several challenges p.rsist, notably, issues related to low electrical conductivity, p.or catalytic activity, and stability, esp.cially at high current density. Herein, we rep.rt the design of Ce-and Ladop.d Co Ni Fe-layered double hydroxide(Ce La Co Ni Fe-LDH) nanosheets through a facile and scalable in situ self-assembly strategy that disp.ays enhanced OER activity. Exp.rimental and theoretical investigations p.ovide insights into the imp.ct of Ceand La-dop.ng by comp.ring Ce Co Ni Fe-LDH, La Co Ni Fe-LDH, and p.istine Co Ni Fe-LDH, all synthesized using the same methodology. These results reveal that dop.ng Ce^(3+)and La^(3+)into Co Ni Fe-LDH substantially imp.oves its electronic structure,resulting in enhanced conductivity, more oxygen vacancies(Vo), electron interaction, and active site formation. Consequently,significantly reduced overp.tentials of 175, 314, and 424 m V at 10, 100, and 500 m A cm^(-2), resp.ctively, and a highly stable current density of 120 h in 1 M KOH were achieved. Notably, these p.rformance metrics surp.ss those of unmodified LDHs and are comp.titive with many lanthanide-dop.d transition metal-based LDH electrocatalysts, as well as noble metal catalysts like ruthenium catalysts. This work rep.esents a p.oneering effort in dop.ng Ce^(3+)and La^(3+)ions into a functional Co Ni Fe-based electrocatalyst, offering insp.ring OER p.rformance and scalability p.tential.
