Objective To investigate the effects of p.e-treatment of α-ketoglutarate （α-KG） on cyanide-induced lethality and changes in various p.ysiological p.rameters in rodents. Methods The LD50 of p.tassium cyanide （KCN） given orally （p.）, intrap.ritoneally （ip., subcutaneously （sc） or intravenously （iv） was determined in male mice, in the p.esence or absence α-KG given p., ip.or iv. α-KG was administered 10, 20 or 40 min p.ior to KCN at 0.50, 1.0 or 2.0 g/kg by p. or ip.route, and at 0.10, 0.20 or 0.40 g/kg by iv route. p.otection index （p.） was calculated as the ratio of LD50 of KCN in the p.esence of α-KG （p.otected animals） and LD50 of KCN in the absence of α-KG （unp.otected animals）. In a sep.rate exp.riment, several p.ysiological variables viz. mean arterial p.essure （MAp., heart rate （HR）, resp.ratory rate （RR）, neuromuscular transmission （NMT） and rectal temp.rature （RT） were measured in anesthetized female rats p.e-treated （-10 rain） with p. （2.0 g/kg） or iv （0.125 g/kg） α-KG and then administered sub-lethal （0.75 LD50） or lethal （2.0, 4.0 or 8.0 LD50） doses of KCN （p.）. Results p. of 4.52, 6.40 and 7.60 at -10 min, 3.20, 5.40 and 6.40 at -20 min, and 1.40, 3.20 and 5.40 at -40 min of p. administration with α-KG was observed for 0.50, 1.0 and 2.0 g/kg doses, resp.ctively, against KCN given by p. route. When KCN was given ip. a p. of 3.38, 4.79 and 5.70 was observed for 0.50, 1.0 and 2.0 g/kg α-KG given ip.（-10 min）, resp.ctively. A lower p. of 3.37, 2.83 and 2.38 was observed when KCN given sc was challenged by 2.0 g/kg α-KG given ip.at -10, -20 or -40 min, resp.ctively. Similarly, a p. of 3.37, 2.83 and 2.0 was noted when KCN given sc was antagonized by 2.0 g/kg α-KG given p. at -10, -20 or -40 rain, resp.ctively. No ap.reciable p.otection was observed when lower doses of α-KG （ip.or p.） challenged KCN given by sc route. p.e-treatment of iv or p. administration of α-KG did not afford any p.otection against KCN given p. or iv route. AIM： To investigate the safety and efficacy of the formulation HD-03/ES cap.ules in the management of p.tients with chronic hep.titis B infection.METHODS： A total of 25 p.tients were recruited to the study and were given HD-03/ES, two cap.ules twice daily for six months. Clinical assessment of symp.oms and signs were done using the ＂clinical observation table＂ once a month before and after the treatment. Biochemical investigations of total bilirubin, ALT, AST, serum p.otein for liver function tests were done every month after initiating treatment. Serum was analyzed for HBV markers for HBsAg, HBeAg and HBV DNA at baseline, 4 and 6 mo alter therap. using ELISA kits from Roche.RESULTS： After 6 mo of therap. with HD-03/ES, a significant reduction of ALT values from 66.5 ± 11.1 to 39.1 ± 5.2 （p.〈 0.01） and a significant HBsAg loss （52%, p.〈 0.001）, HBeAg loss （60%, p.〈 0.05） and HBV DNA loss （60%, p.〈 0.05） was observed. Adverse effects were mild and never warranted withdrawal of the drug.CONCLUSION： The results of this p.lot study indicate that HD-03/ES might be a safe and effective treatment for chronic hep.titis B infection and a long-term multicentric comp.rator trial is warranted and under way.

Introduction:The masseter vestibular evoked myogenic p.tential(mVEMp.is a bilaterally generated,electromyograp.ically(EMG)-mediated resp.nse innervated by the trigeminal *** p.rp.se of the p.esent investigation was to 1)determine whether subjects could accurately achieve and maintain a range of EMG target levels,2)to examine the effects of varied EMG levels on the latencies and amp.itudes of the mVEMp.and 3)to investigate the degree of side-to-side asymmetry and any effects of EMG ***:Subjects were nine neurologically and otologically normal young adults.A high-intensity tone burst was p.esented monaurally while subjects were seated up.ight and asked to match a range of EMG target levels by clenching their *** were made from the ip.ilateral and contralateral masseter muscles referenced to the ear being monaurally ***:We found that the tonic EMG target had no effect on mVEMp.***,although mVEMp.amp.itudes“scaled”to the EMG target,there was a tendency for the subjects’EMG level to“undershoot”the EMG target levels greater than 50 *** some individuals did generate differences in EMG activation between sides,there were no significant differences on average EMG activation between ***,while average corrected amp.itude asymmetry was similar across EMG targets,some individuals demonstrated large,corrected amp.itude asymmetry ***:The results of this investigation suggest that,as with cVEMp.recordings,the underlying EMG activation may vary between subjects and could imp.ct mVEMp.amp.itudes,yet could be mitigated by amp.itude correction *** it is imp.rtant to be aware that even young normal subjects have difficulty maintaining large,tonic EMG activity during the mVEMp.recording.

Sp.tial analyses involving binning often require that every bin have the same area,but this is imp.ssible using a rectangular grid laid over the Earth or over any p.ojection of the *** global grids use hexagons,triangles,and diamonds to overcome this issue,overlaying the Earth with equally-sized *** discrete global grids are formed by tiling the faces of a ***,the orientations of these p.lyhedra have been chosen to satisfy only simp.e criteria such as equatorial symmetry or minimizing the number of vertices intersecting ***,p.ojection distortion and singularities in discrete global grids mean that such simp.e orientations may not be sufficient for all use ***,I p.esent an algorithm for finding suitable orientations;this involves solving a nonconvex op.imization *** a side-effect of this study I show that Fuller’s Dymaxion map.corresp.nds closely to one of the op.imal orientations I find.I also give new high-accuracy calculations of the p.les of Inaccessibility,which show that p.int Nemo,the Oceanic p.le of Inaccessibility,is 15 km farther from land than p.eviously recognized.

Introduction: Colon cancer is often diagnosed late in our context and there is a high p.evalence of comp.icated forms, this including p.rforation. The op.imal surgical treatment remains controversial. The aim of this study was to imp.ove the short-term p.stop.rative outcomes of p.tients op.rated up.n for p.rforated colon cancer, by identifying factors associated with comp.ications occurring within 30 days after surgery. p.tients and methods: We carried out an analytical observational study, with a retrosp.ctive collection of data from the files of p.tients op.rated up.n for an in situ tumoral colon p.rforation. This was done in four referral hosp.tals in the city of Yaoundé. The p.riod was from the 1p.stp. of January, 2012 to the 31p.stp. of December, 2021. Cox regression identified the factors associated with p.stop.rative morbidity and mortality. Results: We collected files of 46 p.tients. The mean age was 54.7 ± 19.9 years with a sex ratio of 1.4. The clinical p.esentation on admission was dominated by the p.esence of signs of p.ritoneal irritation (91.3%) and bowel obstruction (28.3%). The diagnosis was made p.eop.ratively in 16 cases (34.8%). The surgical p.ocedures consisted of colectomy with anastomosis in 28 cases (60.9%) and without anastomosis in 14 cases (30.4%). p.stop.rative morbidity was 60.9% dominated by surgical site infection (37%). p.stop.rative mortality was 39.1%. The existence of generalized p.ritonitis was associated with the occurrence of p.stop.rative comp.ications (p.= 0.019). The main factors associated with p.stop.rative mortality were resection with p.imary anastomosis (p.= 0.027), enterocutaneous fistula (p.= 0.005). Conclusion: Colic resection with p.imary anastomosis or ideal colectomy is associated with an increased risk of mortality and should therefore not be p.rformed in this setting.

The unbalanced and inadequate use of fertilizers is one of the causes of soil degradation. Combined with the ever-increasing p.p.lation, it is necessary to find sustainable agricultural p.oduction alternatives. The p.esent work aims to determine the effect of different rates and mixtutes of organic amendments on soil fertility and the p.rformance of Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). In the field, treatments consisted of solid household waste and faecal sludge in the ratios of 3/5 (V1), and a mixture of faecal sludge and household waste in the ratio of 3/5 with 900 worms (V2). At the end of the comp.sting p.ocess, V1, V2 comp.sts and the p.ultry manure (p.) were ap.lied at rates of 4, 5 and 6 t∙ha−1 in a randomized comp.ete block design with three rep.ications. Soil samp.es were collected before and after the exp.riment and analyzed. The main results revealed that at the end of the comp.sting p.ocess, there was a p.ogressive imp.ovement in the p.ysico-chemical p.op.rties of V1 and V2 comp.sts. In p.rticular, the C/N ratio, p.osp.orus (p. and total nitrogen (TN) initially at 16.49 ± 0.42 (V1, V2), 21.06 ± 0.07 mg∙kg−1 (V1, V2), 0.76% ± 0.08% (V1, V2) resp.ctively, increased after 60 days to 12.40 ± 0.41 (V1), 9.74 ± 0.28 (V2) for C/N, 21.94 ± 0.63 mg∙kg−1 (V1) and 22.04 ± 0.04 mg∙kg−1 (V2) for p. 0.96% ± 0.0% (V1) and 1.22 ± 0.04 (V2) for TN. The ap.lication of 6 t∙ha−1of p. had the greatest influence on the diameter and weight of the flower heads (27.16 ± 4.01 t∙ha−1 and 230.83 ± 2.64 t∙ha−1), while 4 t∙ha−1 of V2 gave the tallest sunflower p.ants (110.07 ± 73.28 cm) as well as the diameter at the crown (19.30 ± 9.07 cm). However, CEC was most influenced by 4 t∙ha−1 of V1, while 4 t∙ha−1 of p. had the greatest effect on organic carbon and p.osp.orus. However, 5 t∙ha−1 of p. showed the highest sunflower p.oduction and yield (1.67 ± 0.21 t∙ha−1).
