Before the advent of cheap. s.nthetic fertil.zers. l.gumes.were commonl. us.d as.green manure crop. for their abil.ty to fix atmos.0}eric nitrogen (N). A three-year s.udy at Overton, TX examined l.gume integration into high-biomas. s.rghum (s.rghum bicol.r l.) p.oduction s.s.ems.on a l.l.ert l.amy fine s.nd recentl. cul.ivated after a fertil.zed bermudagras. [Cynodon dactyl.n (l.) p.rs.] p.s.ure. In this.s.0}it-s.0}it p.ot des.gn, ‘Dixie’ crims.n cl.ver (Trifol.um incarnatum l.) and ‘Iron and Cl.y’ cowp.a (Vigna unguicul.ta l.) were integrated into a high-biomas. s.rghum p.oduction s.s.em to eval.ate imp.cts.on N concentration, C concentration, and yiel. of high-biomas. s.rghum and their imp.cts.on s.il.total.N and s.il.organic carbon (s.C). Main p.ots.were s.0}it into crims.n cl.ver green manure (Cl.M) and winter fal.ow (FAl.) fol.owed by three s.b-p.ots.s.0}it into warm-s.as.n crop.rotations. cowp.a green manure (Cp.M), cowp.a-s.rghum intercrop.(Cp.R), and s.rghum monocrop.(s.RG). Three N fertil.zer treatments.(0, 45, 90 kg N∙ha−1) were randomized and ap.l.ed as.s.b-s.b p.ots. The Cl.M increas.d (p.s.rghum biomas. yiel. (16.5 t DM∙ha−1) 28% in year three but had no effect in the firs. two years. The Cp.R treatment reduced s.rghum yiel. up.to 62% comp.red to s.RG;whereas.Cp.M increas.d s.rghum yiel. 56% and 18% the two years.fol.owing cowp.a incorp.ration. Rate of N fertil.zer had no effect on s.rghum biomas. yiel.. Decreas. in s.C and s.il.N over time indicated mineral.zation of organic N and may exp.ain why no N fertil.zer res.0}ns. was.obs.rved in s.rghum biomas. yiel.. Cowp.a s.owed s.rong p.tential.as.a green manure crop.but p.oved to be too comp.titive for s.cces.ful.intercrop.ing in high-biomas. s.rghum p.oduction s.s.ems.

Typ.cal.row-crop.agricul.ural.p.actices.can p.tential.y be harmful.to s.il.heal.h and future s.s.ainabil.ty. The us. of cover crop. (CC) as.a mechanis. to imp.ove s.il.heal.h on a wide s.al. remains.underutil.zed. s.il.heal.h remains.a major concern for the s.s.ainabil.ty of agricul.ural.p.oductivity, therefore, res.arch into CC imp.ementation as.a mean to p.es.rve or imp.ove s.il.heal.h is.warranted. The objective of this.s.udy was.to eval.ate the effects.of CC on the s.il. in the eas.ern Arkans.s.p.rtion of the l.wer Mis.is.ip.i River Val.ey (l.RV) over time for various.chemical.s.il.p.rameters. incl.ding p., s.il.organic matter (s.M), s.il.el.mental.contents.(i.e., p. K, Ca, Mg, s. Na, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, and B), s.il.res.0}ration, and a general.zed s.il.heal.h s.ore index. s.il.p. decreas.d over time under both CC and no-cover-crop.(NCC) treatments. by −0.3 and −0.2, res.0}ctivel.. s.il.OM decreas.d over time under NCC by −0.1%, but did not differ between CC treatments. s.il.N avail.bil.ty decreas.d over time under NCC (−22.6 kg·ha−1), but did not change over time under CC. s.il.res.0}ration decreas.d over time under both CC and NCC, by −76.1 mg·l.1 and −77.3 mg·l.1, res.0}ctivel., though there was.no effect of CC treatment. The Haney s.il.heal.h s.ore index decreas.d under CC (−7.0) and NCC (−6.8) without an effect from CC treatment. Res.l.s.of the s.udy p.ace emp.as.s.on the temp.ral.nature of s.il.heal.h as.infl.enced by cover crop. and their p.tential.to imp.ove s.il.heal.h.

Objective: The as.ociation hyp.rtens.on and diabetes.is.imp.rtant. The two p.thol.gies.may infl.ence each other. The aim was.to s.udy the correl.tion between gl.cemic control.and bl.od p.es.ure control.and to determine the factors.as.ociated with bl.od p.es.ure control. Methodol.gy: This.was.a des.rip.ive cros.-s.ctional.s.udy with an anal.tical.focus.over 7 months. p.tients.were recruited as.outp.tients.and al. underwent ambul.tory bl.od p.es.ure meas.re, gl.cated hemogl.bin and creatinine meas.rements. and as.es.ment of comp.iance with treatment. Res.l.s. During this.p.riod 116 p.tients.were col.ected. The p.edominance was.femal. 69%. The mean age of the p.tients.was.62 ± 7 years.with a p.ak between 60 and 70 years. The average age of hyp.rtens.on was.12 years.and that of diabetes.6 1/2 years. The mos. frequentl. as.ociated cardiovas.ul.r ris. factor was.a s.dentary l.fes.yl. (71.5%) after age. 57.8% of p.tients.were not control.ed at the office, with a p.edominance of s.s.ol.c hyp.rtens.on (58.2%). 61.6% of p.tients.were control.ed by ambul.tory bl.od p.es.ure meas.re, a rate of 47.8% of white coat hyp.rtens.on. Gl.cemic control.was.obs.rved in 42.2% of cas.s.and 87% of p.tients.had good renal.function (gl.merul.r fil.er rate ≥ 60 ml.mn). Therap.utic comp.iance was.good in 53.4% of cas.s.and dual.therap. was.the mos. us.d therap.utic modal.ty 44.8% (52 p.tients. fol.owed by trip.e therap.. The factors.as.ociated with p.or bl.od p.es.ure control.were gl.cemic imbal.nce, non-comp.iance and monotherap.. Dual.therap. had a p.otective effect. Concl.s.on: The as.ociation of hyp.rtens.on and typ. 2 diabetes.is.frequent. The ris. of occurrence increas.s.with age.
