The lignite samp.es collected from Giral lignite field of Barmer basin have been subjected to p.trological investigation. The data generated has been discussed to understand the evolution of the p.leomires of these lignites. The p.esent study reveals that these low rank.C coals are chiefly comp.sed of huminite group.macerals, mainly telohuminite and detrohuminite, while lip.inite and inertinite group.macerals occur in subordinate amounts. Not much variation in the maceral comp.sition from Seam-I to Seam-VIII has been observed. Barmer lignites are characterized by a very high GI （〉10） and moderate Tp. indicating top.genous mire in the basin which was p.rmanently flooded. The GI and Tp. values and the p.trograp.y-based facies critical models indicate that these lignites originated mostly under wet forest swamp.to clastic marsh having telmatic to limno-telmatic conditions with a moderate rate of subsidence and a very slow fall in ground water table. Further, the GWI and VI values are suggestive of mesotrop.ic to rheotrop.ic hydrological conditions having the dominance of herbaceous to marginal aquatic vegetation. There were sp.lls of p.riodic drowning of p.at esp.cially during the formation of Seam-VII. moderately high concentration of calcium in these lignites along with the p.esence of framboidal p.rite indicate enhanced sulp.ate-reducing bacterial activity p.esent in carbonate and sulp.ate-rich waters in the basin during p.at formation.

In order to imp.ove the mechanical p.op.rties of p.wder metallurgy （p.m） ferrite-p.arlite steel, a dual p.ase （Dp. ferrite-martensite steel was p.oduced through intercritical annealing of sintered p.m p.eforms. mi-crostructures of the sintered and Dp.steels were examined with op.ical, scanning and transmission electron microscop.s. mechanical p.op.rties were evaluated through hardness measurements and comp.ession tests. microstructural studies revealed that sintered steel contained p.lygonal ferrite-p.arlite while the Dp.steel contained p.lygonal, lath and acicular ferrite along with lath-typ. martensite as microstructural constituents. In Dp.steels, with increasing mean p.eform density, the microstructure contained fine and continuous network.of martensite colonies with minimum p.rosity. The work.hardening rate vs p.astic strain p.ots （Jaoul-Crussard analysis） of both the steels revealed typ.cal three stage deformation behaviour for low and high mean p.eform densities. Comp.ession tests revealed that, Dp.p.m steel disp.ayed higher strength-p.asticity combination than the sintered steel.

We investigated the effect of seed mass on emergence, seedling survival and growth ofp.erocarp.s marsup.um Roxb., a medium to large, commercially valuable and deciduous tree sp.cies. Among the three size classes viz. small （10-12 mm）, medium （13-15 mm） and large （16-17 mm）, the maximum p.op.rtion, of seed by number （54.12%） and dry weight （51.87%） was recorded, in the medium size seed class. Seed length and seed width were greatest in the large seed class （16.50 mm, 7.33 mm） followed by medium （13.50 mm, 5.60 mm） and small （11.37 ram, 3.66 mm）. Similarly, hundred seed weight （100 sw） varied from a maximum of 12.92 g in the large seed class to intermediate 10.95 g in the medium seed class and minimum of 7.02 g in the small seed class. The large seed size showed maximum emergence and shoot length over the medium and small seed class. After six months of growth, significant variations due to seed size were also observed for the growth and dry weight of p. marsup.um seedlings. Seedling vigour, exp.essed in terms of height, collar diameter, number of leaves and dry biomass, was sig- nificantly affected by seed class. Seedlings that emerged from large seeds showed better growth and p.oduced heavier seedlings as comp.red to medium and small seeds.

Sp.cific activity of p.imordial radionuclides and associated radiation hazards due to 40k. 226Ra, and 232Th have been measured in back.d red brick.samp.es, collected from five highly p.p.lated areas of the North West Frontier p.ovince of p.k.stan. For the detection, analysis and data acquisition, a high p.rity germanium detector was used. Associated external doses were calculated using a monte Carlo neutron p.oton transp.rt code. A theoretical model to determine the gamma dose rate at 1 m height from the floor, made of brick., was emp.oyed for the calculation of mass attenuation coefficient and self-absorp.ion in the floor for the gamma energies of these radionuclides and their p.ogeny. monte Carlo simulation shows that in this study the floor, having more than an effective thick.ess of 15 cm, contributes very little to the external gamma dose rate. The values of the external dose rate and annual effective dose are found to be much lower than the world average as well as from other countries of the world.

Increasing demand of automobile fuel and a need to p.ocess heavier crude oil mak.s it imp.rative to find imp.ovements to the design of existing fluid catalytic crack.ng （FCC） units. Several modifications to the design of the riser section of FCC units have been suggested in p.evious studies including： imp.oved feed nozzle designs, multip.e nozzle configurations, internal baffles, and novel two-stage-riser systems. In this study, we investigate the effects of baffles on the p.rformance of FCC risers using comp.tational fluid dynamics simulations. In this study, p.edictions from a basis model （without baffles） are comp.red with those from four different configurations including：（i） 5-cm baffles at 5-m sp.cing, （ii） 7.5-cm baffles at 5- m sp.cing, （iii） 10-cm baffles with 5-m sp.cing, （iv） lO-cm baffles at 2.5-m sp.cing, and （v） lO-cm baffles at 1-m sp.cing. The baffles force the catalyst away from wails toward the center of the riser, enhancing the radial disp.rsion of the catalyst and the heat transfer inside the riser. The use of longer baffles and smaller sp.cings further increases the disp.rsion, yielding more homogeneous radial p.ofiles. The changes in the radial disp.rsion result in variations in the conversion, yields, and p.essure drop.. The baffles increase conversion of vacuum gas oil （VGO） and the yield of gasoline. However, the simulations showed that longer baffles and a larger number of baffles did not always give a higher yield or higher conversion. Among the simulated configurations, the 5-cm baffles at 5-m sp.cing gave the highest conversion of VGO, whereas the 10-cm baffles at 1 -m sp.cing resulted in the highest yield of the gasoline. Thus, rational op.imization of baffle configurations is required to achieve op.imal p.rformance.

We p.esent op.ical and infrared p.otometric and sp.ctroscop.c studies of two Be stars in the 70-80-myr-old op.n cluster NGC 6834. NGC 6834（1） has been rep.rted as a binary from sp.ck.e interferometric studies whereas NGC 6834（2） may p.ssibly be a γ Cas-lik. variable. Infrared p.otometry and sp.ctroscop. from the United k.ngdom Infrared Telescop. （Uk.RT）, and op.ical data from various facilities are combined with archival data to understand the nature of these candidates. High signal-to-noise near-IR sp.ctra obtained from Uk.RT have enabled us to study the op.ical dep.h effects in the hydrogen emission lines of these stars. We have exp.ored the sp.ctral classification scheme based on the intensity of emission lines in the H and k.bands and contrasted it with the conventional classification based on the intensity of hydrogen and helium absorp.ion lines. This work.also p.esents hitherto unavailable UBV CCD p.otometry of NGC 6834, from which the evolutionary state of the Be stars is identified.

Fetr6 is an underground mine in which chromite is extracted using stop. and p.llar mining method. Desp.te of all imp.oving work. such as roof sup.orting and rep.acing of ore p.llars with concrete p.llars, p.llar No. 19 failed and other p.llars failed p.ogressively as a domino effect and 4000 m2 of mine collap.ed within a few minutes, consequently. For detail investigation, two 3-D numerical models were develop.d by 3Dec. The first, a base model, was used for estimation of stress on p.llars just before failure and the other for investigation of rock.burst in p.llar No. 19. The results show that discontinuity p.rameters such as friction angle and shear stiffness is critical p.rameters in this p.llar failure. In addition, it indicates that W/H ratio equal 0.3, the lack.of ore extraction strategy and inadequate roof sup.ort are the major reasons for this failure. In this p.p.r, the p.ocedure of study was described.

Identification of quantitative trait loci （QTLs） for grain mineral elements can assist in faster and more p.ecise develop.ent of micronutrient dense rice varieties through mark.r-assisted breeding. In the p.esent study, QTLs were map.ed for Fe and Zn concentrations in two BC2F3 map.ing p.p.lations derived from the crosses of O. sativa cv Swarna with two different accessions of O. nivara. In all, 10 and 8 QTLs were identified for grain Fe and Zn concentrations in p.p.lation 1, and 7 and 5 QTLs were identified in p.p.lation 2, resp.ctively. Eighty p.rcent of the QTLs detected in both p.p.lations were derived from O. nivara. Five QTLs for Fe and three QTLs for Zn exp.ained more than 15% p.enotyp.c variance either in interval or comp.site interval map.ing. The locations of O. nivara derived QTLs such as qFe2.1, qFe3.1, qFe8.2 and qZn12.1 were consistently identified in both the p.p.lations. Ep.static interaction was observed only between Rm106 and Rm6 on chromosome 2 and between Rm22 and Rm7 on chromosome 3 for Fe concentration in p.p.lation 1. Sixteen candidate genes for metal homeostasis were found to co-locate with 10 QTLs for Fe and Zn concentrations in both the p.p.lations. most of the Fe and Zn QTLs were found to co-locate with QTLs for grain yield and grain quality traits. Some of the major effect QTLs identified can be used to imp.ove rice grain Fe and Zn concentrations.
