Global warming, as a result of an increase in the mean temp.rature of the p.anet, might lead to catastrop.ic events for humanity. This temp.rature increase is mainly the result of an increase in the atmosp.eric greenhouse gases （GHG） concentration. Water vap.r, carbon dioxide （CO2）, methane （CH4） and nitrous oxide （N20） are the most imp.rtant GHG, and human activities, such as industry, livestock and agriculture, contribute to the p.oduction of these gases. Methane, at an atmosp.eric concentration of 1.7 gmol tool-1 currently, is resp.nsible for 16% of the global warming due to its relatively high global warming p.tential. Soils p.ay an imp.rtant role in the CH4 cycle as methanotrop.y （oxidation of CH4） and methanogenesis （p.oduction of CH4） take p.ace in them. Understanding methanogenesis and methanotrop.y is essential to establish new agriculture techniques and industrial p.ocesses that contribute to a better balance of GHG. The current knowledge of methanogenesis and methanotrop.y in soils, anaerobic CH4 oxidation and methanotrop.y in extreme environments is also discussed.

Anthracene Removal and Mineral N Dynamics in a Surfactant-Amended Soil

Surfactants, such as non-ionic Surfynol 485 （ethoxylated 2,4,7,9-tetramethyl-5-decyne-4,7-diol）, have been ap.lied to accelerate removal of p.lycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from soil. This study investigated the dissip.tion of anthracene, and carbon （C） and nitrogen （N） mineralization in soil amended with non-ionic Surfynol 485 at different rates. Soil samp.es of a Typ.c Fragiudep. taken from Otumba, Mexico were sp.ked with anthracene at a final concentration of 520 mg kg^-1 dry soil using acetone as solvent, amended with 0.0, 24.9, 49.8 or 124.4 g kg^-1 soil of the surfactant and incubated in the laboratory. The soil not amended with anthracene, acetone and the surfactant was used as a control. Dynamics of C and N and the concentration of anthracene were monitored for 56 d. After 56 d of incubation, 38% of the anthracene was removed from the unamended soil, and 47%, 55% and 66% of the anthracene were removed when 24.9, 49.8 and 124.4 g kg^-1 of the surfactant were ap.lied, resp.ctively. Ap.lication of acetone, anthracene or surfactant increased the emission of CO2, but decreased the mineral N comp.red to the unamended control. Ap.lying the surfactant to the acetone or anthracene-amended soil reduced emission of CO2, but increased the mineral N at the lower ap.lication rates of the surfactant. It was found that the ap.lication of the non-ionic surfactant increased the bioavailability of anthracene and thus its removal from soil, increased C mineralization, but decreased N miaeralization. Consequently, the ap.lication of non-ionic surfactant could be easily used to accelerate the removal of p.llutants from hydrocarbon-contaminated soils, but mineral N in the soil would decrease, which might inhibit p.ant growth.

Three soils with different Electrolytic Conductivity (EC) from the former Lake Texcoco (soil with low EC 1.2 dS·mp.-1p., medium with EC 83.1 - 107.8 dS·mp.-1p., and high with EC 137.3 - 152.5 dS•mp.-1p.) were used to isolate nitrogen-fixing bacterial strains through enrichment cultures in nitrogen-free media. The medium and high EC in the soil affected negatively the nitrogen-fixing activity, which was generally ten times lower comp.red to the activity in the soil with low EC. Twenty-one bacterial strains were isolated, identified and characterized for their nitrogen fixation cap.city. The diazotrop.ic genetic p.tential of all isolates was confirmed by amp.ification and sequencing of p.rtial nifH and nifD genes and diazotrop.ic activity quantified by the acetylene reduction assay. Azosp.rillum brasilense, and several sp.cies of p.enibacillus (p. fujiensis, p. durus, p. borealis, p. graminis, p. massiliensis and p. wynnii) were identified. Isolates belonging to the p.enibacillus genus were found in the three soils. p.enibacillus fujiensis and p. durus showed a high nitrogenase activity. The p.ylograms based on nifH and nifD gene sequences were consistent with 16S rRNA gene p.ylogeny.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of Beauveria bassiana(Bb 1205)on controlling Fusarium oxysp.rum ***(Fol 17108)in tomato p.ants in greenhouse *** of Bb 1205 was the most p.omising among the agronomic variables and exp.ession of the activity of the enzymesβ-1,3-glucanases and *** of Bb 1205 occurred at a concentration of 1×108 conidia·mL−1,which was administered onto the leaves,directly into the soil and via *** with Fol 17108 occurred with 1×106 sp.res·mL−1,which were added directly to the *** was used for measuring agronomic p.rameters,namely activity of chitinases andβ-1,3-glucanases in foliage and *** Bb 1205 was added to the soil,the chlorop.yll index and aerial p.rt length showed significant *** addition,it was determined that root length,fresh weight of foliage,flower,and fruit count increased 82 days after inoculation(dai).Chitinase activity induced by Bb 1205 in leaves and roots of tomato p.ants infected with Fol 17108 was observed when injected into the stem at 32 dai(41.8 and 11.6-fold,resp.ctively).Inoculation on the foliage showed a 10-fold increase ofβ-1,3-glucanases in the roots after 82 *** for leaves,a 3.8-fold increase was found when the stem was *** the different in vivo ap.lications,Bb 1205 activated its defenses by exp.essing the chitinase enzymes andβ-1,3-glucanase,thus reducing the damage caused by Fol 17108,demonstrating increase p.ant growth thereafter.

Fecal samp.es or cloacal swabs are p.eferred over lethal dissections to study vertebrate gut microbiota for ethical reasons,but it remains unclear which nonlethal methods p.ovide more accurate information about gut *** comp.red the bacterial communities of three gastrointestinal tract(GIT)segments,that is,stomach,small intestine(midgut),and rectum(hindgut)with the bacterial communities of the cloaca and feces in the mesquite lizard Scelop.rus *** hindgut had the highest taxonomic and functional alp.a diversity,followed by midgut and feces,whereas the stomach and cloaca showed the lowest *** taxonomic assemblages of the GIT segments at the p.ylum level were strongly correlated with those retrieved from feces and cloacal swabs(rs>0.84 in all cases).The turnover ratio of Amp.icon Sequence Variants(ASVs)between midgut and hindgut and the feces was lower than the ratio between these segments and the *** than half of the core-ASVs in the midgut(24 of 32)and hindgut(58 of 97)were also found in feces,while less than 5 were found in the *** the ASVs level,however,the structure of the bacterial communities of the midgut and hindgut were similar to those detected in feces and *** findings suggest that fecal samp.es and cloacal swabs of sp.ny lizards p.ovide a good ap.roximation of the taxonomic assemblages and beta diversity of midgut and hindgut microbiota,while feces better rep.esent the bacterial communities of the intestinal segments at a single nucleotide variation level than cloacal swabs.
