Visible light driven mineralization of spiramycin over photostructured N-doped TiO2 on up conversion phosphors

A novel visible light-active photocatalyst formulation（NdT/Op） was obtained by supporting N-doped TiO2（NdT） particles on up-conversion luminescent organic phosphors（Op）. The photocatalytic activity of such catalysts was evaluated for the mineralization process of spiramycin in aqueous solution. The effect of NdT loading in the range 15–60 wt.% on bulk and surface characteristics of NdT/Op catalysts was investigated by several chemicophysical characterization techniques. The photocatalytic performance of NdT/Op catalysts in the removal of spyramicin from aqueous solution was assessed through photocatalytic tests under visible light irradiation. Total organic carbon（TOC） of aqueous solution,and CO and CO2 gas concentrations evolved during the photodegradation were analyzed. A dramatic enhancement of photocatalytic activity of the photostructured visible active NdT/Op catalysts,compared to NdT catalyst,was observed. Only CO2 was detected in gas-phase during visible light irradiation,proving that the photocatalytic process is effective in the mineralization of spiramycin,reaching very high values of TOC removal. The photocatalyst NdT/Op at 30 wt.% of NdT loading showed the highest photocatalytic activity（58%of TOC removed after 180 min irradiation against only 31% removal after 300 min of irradiation of NdT）. We attribute this enhanced activity to the high effectiveness in the utilization of visible light through improved light harvesting and exploiting. Op particles act as ＂photoactive support＂,able to be excited by the external visible light irradiation,and reissue luminescence of wavelength suitable to promote NdT photomineralization activity.

The effect of space weather on the ionosphere at the 110°meridian during CAWSES-Ⅱperiod

Space weather determines the state of the ionosphere,which is especially important to know during *** study this state,the period of March 7-17,2012,which was recommended by SCOSTEp for detailed studies and called CAWSES-II,was *** this period,the behavior of parameters of the solar wind(SW)and the interplanetary magnetic field(IMF)show a number of *** this paper,we study their relationship with the total electron content(TEC)and the critical frequency(foF2)of the ionosphere at the 110°meridian,near which several ionosondes are located,in the range of 20°N-62.5°*** correlation coefficients of TEC and foF2 with the SW and IMF parameters for the month and the selected period are *** ionosphere showed the considered disturbances in different ways in different latitudinal zones:negative anomalies are observed at high latitudes,and positive ones at low latitudes.A distinctive feature is the presence of signs of a super-fountain *** of TEC and foF2 from their medians can be *** IRI model reacted in the latitude range 40°N-62.5°N in the form of negative anomalies,although positive anomalies were observed in the *** lower latitudes,no reaction was *** all factors(F10.7,Dst,Kp,IMF,Np),three zones(high-latitude,midlatitude,and low-latitude)are distinguished for different *** strongest influence of disturbances on the correlation coefficients is observed in the zone of 37.5°N 62.5°N.

A “false positive” octreoscan in ileal Crohn’s disease

We present a case report of a patient with a suspicious ileal carcinoid tumour. Clinical examination as well as computer tomograghy (CT) scan suggested a tumour. Octeotride scan showed uptake in the same bowel loop reported as pathological in CT. The patient underwent surgery and biopsy which reported Crohn’s disease (CD). The interest in the case is due to the fact that this is, to the best of our knowledge, the second report of Crohn’sdisease as a cause of false positive octeotride scan. Unfortunately, no somatostatin recptors could be found in the sample, so further studies should be performed.

Retinal degeneration is a major contributor to visual dysfunction *** it comprises several eye diseases,loss of retinal pigment epithelial(RpE)and photoreceptor cells are the major contributors to their *** therapies included diverse treatments,such as provision of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor and many survival and trophic factors that,in some cases,slow down the progression of the degeneration,but do not effectively prevent *** finding of stem cells(SC)in the eye has led to the proposal of cell replacement strategies for retina *** using different types of SC,such as retinal progenitor cells(RpCs),embryonic SC,pluripotent SCs(pSCs),induced pSCs(ipSCs),and mesenchymal stromal cells,capable of self-renewal and of differentiating into multiple cell types,have gained ample *** preclinical studies have assessed transplantation of SC in animal models,with encouraging *** aim of this work is to revise the different preclinical and clinical approaches,analyzing the SC type used,their efficacy,safety,cell attachment and integration,absence of tumor formation and immunorejection,in order to establish which were the most relevant and *** addition,we examine the questions and concerns still open in the *** data demonstrate the existence of two main approaches,aimed at replacing either RpE cells or *** evidence suggests that RpCs and ipSC are the best candidates,presenting no ethical concerns and a low risk of *** trials have already supported the safety and efficacy of SC *** concerns are pending,such as the risk of tumor formation,lack of attachment or integration of transplanted cells into host retinas,immunorejection,cell death,and also ***,the amazing progress in the field in the last few years makes it possible to envisage safe and effective treatments to restore vision loss in a near future.

Empowering sonic hedgehog to rescue brain cells after ischemic stroke

Ischemic stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is interrupted. This can cause irreversible injury to the cen- tral nervous system （CNS） tissue. Each year in the United States almost 800,000 people experience a new or recur- rent stroke. 15% of stroke patients die shortly after insult and only 10% recover completely, leaving the majority of surviving stroke patients with disabilities. Tissue-type plasminogen activator （tpA） is the only available therapy for stroke but its clinical use is limited because of associ- ated danger of intracranial hemorrhage. Therefore, there is an emergent need for stroke therapeutics that are safe and effective when administered at a later time point after insult.

Selection of phages and conditions for the safe phage therapy against pseudomonas aeruginosa infections

The emergence of multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens forced us to consider the phage therapy as one of the possible alternative approaches to treatment. The purpose of this paper is to consider the conditions for the safe, long-term use of phage therapy against various infections caused by pseudomonas aeruginosa. We describe the selection of the most suitable phages, their most effective combinations and some approaches for the rapid recognition of phages unsuitable for use in therapy. The benefi ts and disadvantages of the various different approaches to the preparation of phage mixtures are considered, together with the specifi c conditions that are required for the safe application of phage therapy in general hospitals and the possibilities for the development of personalized phage therapy.

Lu Xun in the Rhetoric of the Sino-Soviet Split： A View from Contemporary Russia

The historical role of the prominent Chinese writer, social activist and thinker Lu Xun （1881-1936）, is difficult to overestimate. His works influenced social change within China and became recognized internationally. For these and other reasons, he was of particular interest in the Soviet Union. Since 1932, his works have been published in numerous editions in Russian and have received a great deal of scholarly attention in the Soviet Union. Such unprecedented attention was initially based on the idea that he held similar revolutionary sentiments to those prevailing in the Soviet Union. Later, from the second half of the 1960s to the early 1970s, the ideological disagreements between the Soviet Union and China influenced the direction of Lu Xun studies in the Soviet Union. Soviet leader Khrushchev called for peaceful coexistence with the capitalist West, while Mao Zedong stressed the universal character of the proletarian revolution. Lu Xun was highly respected in both the USSR and China, and thus became an influential tool in this polemic. But, for Soviet scholars, this renewed focus on Lu Xun offered an opportunity to provide a new perspective on the writer＇s works. This paper analyzes how the Sino-Soviet split influenced Russian academics＇ positions on Lu Xun. The focus is on the three main points of contention in the ideological disagreements between the pRC and the USSR. First, Soviet critics focused on the psychological aspects and individualism in the Lu Xun＇s works. Second, a special focus on humanistic elements in the writer＇s ideas can be seen as a result of the Soviet disagreement with the Cultural Revolution＇s period. Third, by pointing to the internationalist aspects of Lu Xun＇s writings, Soviet scholars attempted to expose the Sinocentric political attitudes of the ruling circles in China.

Spatial Resilience to Wildfires through the Optimal Deployment of Firefighting Resources:Impact of Topography on Initial Attack Effectiveness

Strongly affected by the escalating impacts of climate change,wildfires have been increasing in frequency and severity around the *** primary aim of this study was the development of specific territorial measures—estimating the optimal locations of firefighting resources—to enhance the spatial resilience to wildfires in the fire-prone region of Chalkidiki prefecture in northern *** measures focus on the resistance to wildfires and the adaptation of strategies to wildfire management,based on the estimation of burn probability,including the effect of anthropogenic factors on fire *** proposed location schemes of firefighting resources such as vehicles consider both the susceptibility to fire and the influence of the topography on travel simulation,highlighting the impact of road slope on the initial firefighting *** spatial scheme,as well as the number of required firefighting forces is totally differentiated due to slope *** we ignore the topography effect,a minimum number of fire vehicles is required to achieve the maximization of coverage(99.2%of the entire study area)giving priority to the most susceptible regions(that is,employing 18 of 24 available fire vehicles).But when we adopt more realistic conditions that integrate the slope effect with travel time,the model finds an optimal solution that requires more resources(that is,employing all 24 available fire vehicles)to maximize the coverage of the most vulnerable regions within 27 *** process achieves 80%of total *** proposed methodology is characterized by a high degree of flexibility,and provides optimized solutions to decision makers,while considering key factors that greatly affect the effectiveness of the initial firefighting attack.
