Spin qubits based on shallow donors in silicon are a promising quantum information technology with enormous potential scalability due to the existence of robust silicon-processing ***,the most accurate theories of donor electronic structure lack predictive power because of their reliance on empirical fitting parameters,while predictive ab initio methods have so far been lacking in accuracy due to size of the donor wavefunction compared to typical simulation *** show that density functional theory with hybrid and traditional functionals working in tandem can bridge this *** first-principles approach allows remarkable accuracy in binding energies(67 meV for bismuth and 54 meV for arsenic)without the use of empirical *** also obtain reasonable hyperfine parameters(1263 MHz for Bi and 133 MHz for As)and superhyperfine *** demonstrate the importance of a predictive model by showing that hydrostatic strain has much larger effect on the hyperfine structure than predicted by effective mass theory,and by elucidating the underlying mechanisms through symmetry analysis of the shallow donor charge density.

Helium is the second most abundant element in the universe, and together with silica, they are important components of giant planets. exploring the reactivity and state of helium and silica under high pressure is crucial for understanding of the evolution and internal structure of giant planets. Here, using first-principles calculations and crystal structure predictions, we identify four stable phases of a helium-silica compound with seven/eight-coordinated silicon atoms at pressure of 600–4000 GPa, corresponding to the interior condition of the outer planets in the solar system. The density of He Si O2 agrees with current structure models of the *** helium-silica compound exhibits a superionic-like helium diffusive state under the high-pressure and hightemperature conditions along the isentropes of Saturn, a metallic fluid state in Jupiter, and a solid state in the deep interiors of Uranus and Neptune. These results show that helium may affect the erosion of the rocky core in giant planets and may help to form a diluted core region, which not only highlight the reactivity of helium under high pressure but also provide evidence helpful for building more sophisticated interior models of giant planets.

Swimming is excellent exercise and offers many health benefits. However, the ＂chlorine smell＂ in swimming pools may be a turn-off for some people. Although this smell is often thought to be of chlorine, it actually comes from volatile compounds that are produced from unintended reactions between disinfectants （e.g., chlorine） and organic matter in the water （Li and Blatchley, 2007; Zwiener et al., 2007; Schmalz et al., 2011; Daiber et al., 2016）. Body fluids, such as sweat and urine, are among the sources of this organic matter that contribute to the formation of disinfection byproducts （DBPs）（Richardson et al., 2007; Arnaud, 2016; Tang et al., 2016）.

Human exposure to contaminants from electronic cigarettes(e-cigarettes)and the associated health effects are poorly *** has been no report on the speciation of arsenic in e-liquid(solution used for e-cigarettes)and *** report here determination of arsenic species in e-liquids and aerosols generated from vaping the *** e-liquid samples of major brands,purchased from local and online stores in Canada and China,were analyzed for arsenic species using high-performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass *** condensed from vaping the eliquids were also analyzed and compared for arsenic *** arsenic species were detected,including inorganic arsenate(iAsⅤ),arsenite(iAsⅢ),monomethylarsonic acid(MMA),and three new arsenic species not reported *** e-liquids,iAsⅢwas detected in 59%,iAsⅤin 94%,and MMA in 47%of the *** the condensate of aerosols from vaping the e-liquids,iAsⅢwas detected in 100%,iAsv in 88%,and MMA in 13%of the *** arsenic species were predominant in e-liquids and aerosols of *** concentration of iAsⅢin the condensate of aerosols(median 3.27μg/kg)was significantly higher than that in the e-liquid(median 1.08μg/kg)*** concentration of inorganic arsenic in the vaping air was approximately 3.4μg/m3,which approaches to the permissible exposure limit(10μg/m3)set by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration(OSHA).According to the environmental Protection Agency’s unit risk factor(4.3×10-3 perμg/m3)for inhalation exposure to inorganic arsenic in the air,the estimated excess lung cancer risk from lifetime exposure to inorganic arsenic in the ecigarette vaping air(3.4μg/m3),assuming e-cigarette vaping at 1%of the time,is as high as1.5×*** results raise health concerns over the exposure to arsenic from electronic cigarettes.

One of the major challenges faced by the biomedical industry is the development of robust synthetic surfaces that can resist bacterial colonization. Much inspiration has been drawn recently from naturally occurring mechano-bactericidal surfaces such as the wings of cicada(Psaltoda claripennis) and dragonfly(Diplacodes bipunctata) species in fabricating their synthetic analogs. However,the bactericidal activity of nanostructured surfaces is observed in a particular range of parameters reflecting the geometry of nanostructures and surface wettability. Here,several of the nanometer-scale characteristics of black silicon(bSi) surfaces including the density and height of the nanopillars that have the potential to influence the bactericidal efficiency of these nanostructured surfaces have been investigated. The results provide important evidence that minor variations in the nanoarchitecture of substrata can substantially alter their performance as bactericidal surfaces.

IgG Heavy Chain Disease (γHCD) is a rare plasma cell disorder. Hypercalcemia related to plasma cell dyscrasias is related to non-PTHrP related mechanisms. Here we describe the first case of a patient with γHCD and PTHrP related hypercalcemia. Methods: Patient case derived from chart review from 2011 to 2015. Literature review performed searching PubMed 1968-current. Results: The patient was diagnosed with hypercalcemia with elevated PTHrP and exclusion of other etiologies of hypercalcemia. She was diagnosed with (γHCD) by M-spike 0.64 g/dL, IFe showing a broad band of IgG heavy chain, without associated light chains and severe depression of the non-mono-clonal IgG. Serum immunoglobulins demonstrated elevated IgG (2110 mg/dL), normal IgA (46 mg/dL) and decreased IgM (e marrow biopsy showed 5% PCs, non-clonal by kappa/lambda, but exclusive for IgG by IHC, without any staining for IgA or IgM. The patient was started on therapy with improved hypercalcemia and PTHrP levels. Conclusions: This is the first reported case of γHCD presenting with PTHrP related hypercalcemia. Given that skeletal involvement is uncommon in γHCD, hypercalcemia secondary to γHCD may at times be a PTHrP driven phenomenon and we recommend that this test be ordered in such cases.

We investigate high-modulus degradable materials intended to replace metals in biomedical *** are typically composites comprising a polylactide(PLA)matrix reinforced with phosphate glass fibres,which provide reinforcement similar to e-glass but are entirely degradable in water to produce,principally,calcium *** have made composites using a variety of fibre architectures,from non-woven random mats to unidirectional fibre *** properties in the region of 30 GPa modulus and 350 MPa strength have been achieved-directly comparable to quoted values for human cortical *** collaboration with other groups we have begun to consider the development of foamed systems with structures mimicking cancellous bone and this has shown significant *** fibres in these foamed structures provide improved creep resistance and reinforcement of the pore *** date the materials have exhibited excellent cellular responses in vitro and further studies are due to include consideration of the surface character of the materials and the influence of this on cell interaction, both with the composites and the glass fibres themselves,which show promise as a standalone porous scaffold.

AIM:To assess the prevalence and location of ad-vanced neoplasia in patients undergoing colonoscopy,and to compare the yield per ***:In a multicenter colonoscopy survey (n = 18 hospitals) in the Amsterdam area (Northern Holland),data of all colonoscopies performed during a three month period in 2005 were analyzed. The location and the histological features of all colonic neoplasia were recorded. The prevalence and the distribution ofadvanced colorectal neoplasia and differences in yield between indication clusters were evaluated. Advanced neoplasm was defi ned as adenoma > 10 mm in size,with > 25% villous features or with high-grade dyspla-sia or ***:A total of 4623 eligible patients underwent a total colonoscopy. The prevalence of advanced neo-plasia was 13%,with 281 (6%) adenocarcinomas and 342 (7%) advanced adenomas. Sixty-seven percent and 33% of advanced neoplasia were located in the distal and proximal colon,respectively. Of all patients with right-sided advanced neoplasia (n = 228),51% had a normal distal colon,whereas 27% had a syn-chronous distal adenoma. Ten percent of all colono-scopies were performed in asymptomatic patients,7% of whom had advanced neoplasia. In the respective procedure indication clusters,the prevalence of right-sided advanced neoplasia ranged from 11%-57%. CONCLUSION:One out of every 7-8 colonoscopies yielded an advanced colorectal neoplasm. Colonoscopy is warranted for the evaluation of both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.

Heterogeneous length-of-stay modeling of post-acute care residents in the nursing home with competing discharge dispositions

Post-acute care(PAC)residents in nursing homes(NHs)are recently hospitalized patients with medically complex diagnoses,ranging from severe orthopedic injuries to cardiovascular diseases.A major role of NHs is to maximize restoration of PAC residents during their NH stays with desirable discharge outcomes,such as higher community discharge likelihood and lower re/hospitalization *** prediction of the PAC residents’length-of-stay(LOS)with multiple discharge dispositions(e.g.,community discharge and re/hospitalization)will allow NH management groups to stratify NH residents based on their individualized risk in realizing personalized and resident-centered NH care *** to the highly heterogeneous health conditions of PAC residents and their multiple types of correlated discharge dispositions,developing an accurate prediction model becomes *** predictive analytics methods,such as distribution-/regression-based methods and machine learning methods,either fail to incorporate varied individual characteristics comprehensively or ignore multiple discharge *** this work,a data-driven predictive analytics approach is considered to jointly predict the individualized re/hospitalization risk and community discharge likelihood over time in the presence of varied residents’characteristics.A sampling algorithm is further developed to generate accurate predictive samples for a heterogeneous population of PAC residents in an NH and facilitate facility-level performance evaluation.A real case study using large-scale NH data is provided to demonstrate the superior prediction performance of the proposed work at individual and facility levels through comprehensive comparison with a large number of existing prediction methods as *** developed analytics tools will allow NH management groups to identify the most at-risk residents by providing them with more proactive and focused care to improve resident outcomes.
