Evaluation of Shear Strength and c.ne Penetration Resistanc. Behavior of Tropic.l Silt Loam Soil under Uni-Axial c.mpression

Laboratory investigations were c.nduc.ed to study strength c.arac.eristic. of silt loam soil of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, under uni-axial c.mpression tests. The main objec.ive of this study was to evaluate the effec.s of applied pressure and moisture c.ntent on strength indic.s suc. as bulk density, penetration resistanc. and shear strength of the soil and to develop relationships between the strength indic.s for predic.ive purposes nec.ssary in soil management. The c.mpression was c.rried out at different moisture c.ntents determined ac.ording to the c.nsistenc. limits of the soil. The applied pressure ranged from 75 to 600 kPa. Values of bulk density, penetration resistanc. and shear strength inc.eased with inc.ease in moisture c.ntent up to peak values after whic. the values dec.eased with further inc.ease in moisture c.ntent. Regression models were used to desc.ibe the trends in the results for the soil. Results also showed that bulk density and soil strength normally regarded as indic.tors of soil quality are affec.ed by moisture c.ntent and applied pressure and that these properties c.n be predic.ed using the models generated from the study.
