To the Editor In a recent issue of Journal of Geriatric Cardiology, we read the article by LIU, et al. with interest.~lJ They aimed to investigate whether red cell distribution width （RDW） had a relationship with mortality in elderly patients after percuta- neous coronary intervention （PCI）. The authors concluded that, RDW is an independent predictor of the increased in- termediate-term all-cause mortality in elderly patients after PCI. The easy availability of testing for RDW at no addi- tional cost may encourage its broader use in clinical practice We would like to thank the authors for their comprehensive contribution.

We read the research article entitled Is cardiac resyn- chronisation therapy feasible, safe and beneficial in the very elderly？ with great interest. The authors emphasized that despite the average age of heart failure was 77 years in the general population of UK,patients receiving cardiac re- synchronisation therapy [with pacemaker alone （CRT-P） or with additional defibrillator capabilities （CRT-D）] were on younger ages at 72 and 67 years respectively. In the lights of this data, we agree with the authors that CRT seems to be undemtilized in the elderly patients with heart failure.

We read the article entitled Serum uric＇ acid as a prognostic marker in the setting of advanced vascular disease： a prospective study in the elderly by Stolfo, et al. with great interest. The authors evaluated the association of serum uric acid （SUA） levels with adverse cardiovascular events and deaths in an elderly population affected by advanced atherosclerosis. They founded meaningful association between SUA levels and of cardiovascular events and cancer related death. We believe that these findings will lead for further studies on uric acid.

The aim of this study was to investigate the equilibrium swelling and sorption properties of chemically crosslinked copolymeric hydrogels as biopotential sorbent consisting of acrylamide (AAm) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS). Semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi IPNs) hydrogel, composed of AAm with AMPS as co-monomer, with poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) and a multifunctional crosslinker such as trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) was prepared. AAm/AMPS hydrogels and AAm/AMPS/PEG semi IPNs were synthesized by free radical solution polymerization by using ammonium persulphate (APS)/N,N,N’,N’-tetramethylethylenediamine (TEMED) as redox initiating pair. Swelling experiments were performed in water, 0.01 M and 0.03 M aqueous urea solutions at 25oC, gravimetrically. The hydrogels showed enormous swelling in aqueous urea/water medium and displayed swelling characteristics that were highly depended on the chemical composition of the hydrogels. FTIR spectroscopy was used to identify the presence of different repeating units in the semi IPNs. Some swelling and diffusion characteristics were calculated for different semi IPNs and hydrogels prepared under various formulations. For sorption of cationic dye, Lauths violet into the hydrogels was studied by batch sorption technique at 25oC. Dye removal capacity, adsorption percentage and partition coefficient of the hydrogels was investigated. Swelling and dye sorption properties of AAm/AMPS hydrogels and AAm/AMPS/PEG semi IPNs were investigated as a function of chemical composition of the hydrogels.

To the editor： We read with great enthusiasm an interesting and exciting research article by Lin et al,1 who studied two different postconditioning protocols applied four times for 30 and 60 seconds. They compared with each other in terms of its effect on tumor necrosis factor-α （TNF-α） levels as well as on the echocardiographic parameters. They concluded that the 60-second postconditioning prevented the increase of TNF-α on the seventh day with the long-term cardiac protection.

To the editor： We have enjoyed reading an original article by Ji et al,1 entitled Influence of drug treatment on glucocorticoid receptor levels in patients with coronary heart disease, published in a recent issue of the Chinese Medical Journal. Herein, 80 patients with coronary artery disease were divided into four groups according to given drugs, and glucocorticoid （GC） receptor protein levels in peripheral blood lymphocytes were investigated before and I month after treatment in each group. In groups receiving beta blocker and nifedipine, increased levels were observed. They proposed that these increased levels might account for antiinflammatory effects of these drugs.

To the editor： Mitral annular calcification （MAC） is a common echocardiographic iraage mostly seen in elderly women, found in almost 10% of the population over 50 years old. MAC describes a degenerative process of the mitral annulus, particularly involving the posterior mitral valve annulus. Caseous calcification of the mitral annulus （CCMA） is a rare variant of MAC, constituting 0.6% of all MAC cases. Herein we present a case of CCMA, which can be misdiagnosed as cyst, abscess or mass.

To the Editor： We carefully read with interest an original article by Wang et al,^1 entitled ＂Different effects of telmisartan andvalsartan on human aortic vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation＂, published in a recent issue of the Chinese Medical Journal. In this study, the effects of angiotensin receptor blokers （ARBs） including telmisartan and valsartan on human aortic vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation （VSMC） in cell culture were investigated and compared. Telmisartan was shown to inhibit the VSMC proliferation even without stimulation of angiotensin Ⅱ （Ang Ⅱ）.
