Prevalence of intestinal parasite infections among patients in local public hospitals of Hail,Northwestern Saudi Arabia

Objective:To evaluate the prevalence of intestinal parasites among patients in Hail,Northwestern Saudi ***:Stool samples were collected from 130 patients(69females and 61 males) in Hail General *** sample was examined by direct wet mount microscopic examination using both normal saline and Lugol's iodine preparation and concentration techniques using salt and formol-ether *** stained smears were performed for intestinal coccidian using modified Ziehl-Neelsen ***:The overall prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection was 45.38%(59 cases).Forty-four(33.84%)were found to be infected with one or more intestinal protozoa.5(3.84%) were infected with helminthes and 10(7.69%) had mixed infection with both helminthes and *** most common intestinal helminth detected was Ancyloxtoma duvdenale(n=5.3.84%),followed by Ascaris *** *** Trichuris trichiura(n=2 for each species,1.5%).For intestinal protozoa,the coccidian Cryptosporidium parvum(n=25,19.23%) was the most common followed by Entamoeba histolytica/dispur(n=21,16.15%),Giurdia lamblia(n=15,11.54%),Entamoeba coli(n=5.3.85%) and Blastocysts hominis(n=3,2.30%).The prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in females was significantly higher than in males(P<0.05).Conclusions:This is the first study highlighting that intestinal parasites are still an important public health problem in Northwestern Saudi Arabia Therefore,health education would be the best way to prevent from intestinal parasite infections which are mainly food borne diseases.

Alzheimer’s disease(AD)is a kind of progressive dementia that is frequently accompanied by brain *** the use of the morpho-logical characteristics of MRI brain scans,this paper proposed a method for diagnosing moderate cognitive impairment(MCI)and *** anatom-ical features of 818 subjects were calculated using the FreeSurfer software,and the data were taken from the ADNI *** features were first removed from the dataset after being preprocessed with an age correction algorithm using linear regression to estimate the effects of normal *** these preprocessed characteristics,the extreme learning machine served as a classifier for the diagnosis of AD and *** determining accuracy,sensitivity,specificity,and area under the curve,ten-fold cross validation was *** accuracy of AD diagnosis was 87.62 percent on average after 100 runs,while the area under curve was 94.25 *** sensitivity of the MCI diagnosis was 83.88 percent,while the accuracy was 73.38 *** age correction can help diagnose MCI more *** outcomes showed that the proposed strategy for diagnosing AD and MCI was more effective than existing methods.

The role of community pharmacists and their perception towards antimicrobial stewardship in Baghdad,Iraq

Background:This study aimed to assess the role of community pharmacists and their perception toward antimicrobial stewardship,in addition to identifying factors influencing their perception and practices in community ***:A cross-sectional study was carried out among community pharmacists regarding antimicrobial *** sampling was used to obtain the required sample from a community pharmacy in *** total,381 participants have completed the ***:The majority of the participants(85.6%)strongly agreed/agreed that“antimicrobial stewardship programs reduce the problems of antibiotic resistance”;and 85.5%of them strongly agreed/agreed that community pharmacists required adequate training on antibiotics *** addition,high percent of community pharmacists(88.4%)strongly agreed/agreed that pharmacists have a responsibility to take a prominent role in antimicrobial stewardship programs and infection-control programs in the health *** total score of perception was significantly influenced by older age groups,postgraduate degrees,and experience of 6–10 years(p<0.001).This study also showed that 65.4%of pharmacists always/often advise patients to continue the full course of antimicrobials,and 64.9%of them reported always/often considering clinical and safety parameters before dispensing *** role of pharmacists was significantly influenced by the younger age group,females,higher degree in pharmacy,experience of 3–5 years,and medical complex pharmacy(p<0.001).Conclusion:Community pharmacists have a good perception toward antimicrobial stewardship programs,but their role is still *** efforts are needed to design better strategies for antimicrobial stewardship in community pharmacy.

Analysis of Retorted Water Produced from Partial Combustion of Sultani Oil Shale

Oil shale samples from Sultani oil shale mine, south of Jordan, were pyrolyzed by a partial combustion to generate shale oil. The produced water was sent for analysis. The different samples were analyzed for carbon content, and results showed that the TOC was 2010 mg per liter of retorted water. Phenol and arsenic contents were measured and found to be 64 mg and 0.18 mg per liter respectively. Phosphate and sulfate were also determined and found to be 35.7 and 5022 mg per liter. On the other hand, ammonium was also found to be 2831 mg per liter. Several elements were traced and reported in the present work, in which arsenic, chrome and nickel are the most important, and the retorted water was found to contain 0.18, 0.7 and 0.5 mg per liter.

Ability of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment to Detect Frailty

Background and Aim of the Work: Frailty is a state of reduced physiological reserve associated with increased susceptibility to disability. It is associated with a high morbidity and mortality. This work assessed the ability of comprehensive geriatric assessment to detect frailty in elderly patients. Subjects and Methods: A total number of 104 elderly patients (above 60 years old) were included in this study and they were subjected to a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) including: (history and full clinical examination, Mini mental status examination (MMSE), Geriatric depression scale (GDS), Activities of daily living (ADL), Instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). The patients were divided into frail and non-frail groups using Fried’s criteria as applied by Avila-Funes et al., 2008, each group included 52 patients. Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups regarding age gender or smoking habits. But there was higher percentage of ADL, IADL dependence in addition to higher incidence of depression and cognitive impairment among frail cases. Conclusion: Comprehensive geriatric assessment can be used to detect frailty and its associated impairment and comorbidities.

Homocystiene and C-Reactive Protein in Detection of Frailty

Background and Aim of the Work: Frailty is a state of reduced physiological reserve and is associated with increased susceptibility to disability. It is associated with a high morbidity and mortality. The aim of this work is to assess the association between the levels of homocystiene and C-reactive protein and frailty and to examine the ability of homocystiene as a new marker to detect frailty. Subjects and Methods: A total number of 104 elderly subjects (above 60 years old) were included in this study and they were subjected to history, examination, comprehensive geriatric assessment, and laboratory investigations including: C-reactive protein (CRP) and Homocystiene (Hcy). The patients were divided into frail and non-frail groups using Fried’s criteria as applied by Avila-Funes et al., 2008 and each group included 52 patients. Results: There was no significant difference between the two groups as regards age gender or smoking habits. But there were higher levels of CRP (>10 mg/dl) and homocystiene (>12 mmol/l) among frail cases and by comparing both homocystiene was more sensitive in detection of frailty. Conclusion: Frailty was associated with eleveted homocystiene and CRP and homocystiene is more specific than CRP in detection of frailty.

Tympanometry Comparison of Diabetic Type I and Diabetic Type II Rats

Hearing impairment affects over two-thirds of adults with diabetes. We investigated whether rat models of type 1 and type 11 diabetes display impaired auditory function. Tympanometry measurements were conducted in Sprague-Dawley rats (control, n = 20), streptozotocin-induced type I diabetic Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 20) at 42 - 56 days old;Zucker rats (Hos: ZFDM-Lean (fa/+, n = 20) and Zucker Type 2 Diabetic rats (ZFDM (Hos: ZFDM-fa/fa);n = 20)), 90 days old. All rats were male. Control animals had normal type A tympanograms. Tweny one (75%) of the tympanic membranes in the diabetic type I group produced abnormal tympanograms: 46% were type B, 28% had no peak found, and 1% were type C. The ear canal measurements were lower in the left ear in type I mice (0.19 ± 0.07) and higher in the left ear for type II mice (0.23 ± 0.15 ml) compared to the controls of 0.39 ± 0.14 ml) and (0.2 ± 0.12 ml) respectively (P < 0.0001). The compliances for the right ear and left ear were lower for the type II diabetic group (0.18 ± 0.05 ml) and (0.18 ± 0.05 ml) compared to the control group (0.28 ± 0.19 ml) and (0.28 ± 0.49 ml) (P < 0.0001) respectively. In conclusion, control rats exhibited type A tympanograms with a highly functional middle ear system. Diabetic type I rats (n = 20) mostly exhibited type B tympanograms with a less compliant middle ear system. Compliance was reduced in the diabetic type I and II animals compared to the control. Future studies should utilise histological methods alongside tympanometry. Sections of the middle ear could be used to analyze ossicle size and confirm size differences. This information would be useful in avenues for treatment options for hearing loss in diabetes.
