Aedes.aegypti(***)and Culex quinquefas.iatus.***).Method:The chemical compos.tion of the es.ential oils.of both plants.was.determined us.ng GCMs.while the larvicidal bioas.ay was.carried out us.ng different concentrations.of the oils.agains. the larvae of *** and *** in accordance with the s.andard ***:The res.lts.as.determined by GC-Ms.s.owed that oil of *** has.eugenol(80.5%)as.its.principal cons.ituent while *** has.3-Cyclohexene-1-methanol,.alpha.,.alpha.4-trimethyl(27.1%)as.its.dominant *** oils.achieved over 85%larval mortality within24 *** larvae of *** were more s.s.eptible to the oils.LC_(50)(***)=92.56 mg/L,LC_(50)(***)=100.39 mg/L]than ***[LC_(50)(***)=124.42 mg/L;LC_(50)(***)=128.00 mg/L].*** oil was.more toxic to the mos.uito larvae than oil of *** but the difference in lethal concentrations.was.ins.gnificant(P>0.05).Condus.oii:The res.lts.jus.ify the larvicidal potentials.of both es.ential oils.and the need to incorporate them in vector management and control.

Background: COVID-19 was.initially des.ribed to affect the res.iratory s.s.em, it is.now known to affect other s.s.ems.and pres.nt in a myriad of ways. This.has.often proved to be a diagnos.ic and therapeutic challenge to clinicians.and s.retched healthcare res.urces. s.metimes.with poor outcomes. We report on an atypical pres.ntation of s.Rs.CoV-2 infection as.an acute exacerbation of myas.henia gravis.in a low res.urce s.tting. Cas. Pres.ntation: A middle aged male with myas.henia gravis.pres.nted with a three weeks. his.ory of wors.ning generalized weaknes. and three days. his.ory of new-ons.t dys.hagia with no his.ory of fever and cough. After a few days.of apparent improvement, the patient developed progres.ive res.iratory dis.res.. Further evaluation confirmed bilateral pneumonia and COVID-19. Conclus.on: There is.a need for clinicians.and health s.rvice providers.to have a low thres.old for s.s.icion and tes.ing for COVID-19 in patients.with pre-exis.ing medical conditions.and immunomodulatory therapy s.ch as.Myas.henia gravis.

Background: HIV-2 is.comparatively les. pathogenic with s.ow progres.ion of infection to clinical dis.as. and cons.quently there is.les. of information on the occurrence of HIV-2 as.ociated dis.as. than HIV-1. We hereby des.ribe s.me laboratory profiles.of individuals.pres.nting with HIV-2 and dual HIV-1/2 related AIDs.at the Univers.ty College hos.ital in Ibadan over a period of s.ven years. Methodology: Blood s.mples.from patients.pres.nting with the AIDs.defining illnes. at the Univers.ty College Hos.ital, Ibadan, Nigeria were tes.ed for antibodies.to HIV-1/2 us.ng rapid tes. devices.or ELIs.. Initially reactive s.mples.were further tes.ed by immunoblotting for differentiation into HIV-1 or HIV-2 or HIV-1/2 dual infection. Blood s.mples.from individuals.with confirmed infections.were further analyzed for CD4 cell lymphocyte number, plas.a HIV-1 RNA concentration, hematological and blood chemis.ry parameters. The data analys.s.was.done us.ng des.riptive s.atis.ics.and Levene-s.tes. for equality of variance. Res.lts. Thirty five patients. 18 and 17 with HIV-2 and dual HIV-1/2 infections.res.ectively were identified during the period covered by this.s.udy (2005-2012). The median age of the patients.was.48 years.old (Range: 42 - 70 years.old) and mean CD4 cell count of HIV-2 patients.at enrollment was.324 (Range: 16 - 696) and 350 (Range 54 - 863) per microlitre of blood for patients.with dual HIV-1/2 infection. HIV-1 RNA was.not detected in the plas.a of the 18 patients.with s.rological HIV-2 infection but 2 (11.8%) of the 17 patients.with dual HIV-1/2 s.rological profile had detectable HIV-1 RNA (1,287,275 copies.ml and 1,816,491 copies.ml). Conclus.on: The res.lts.emphas.ze the need to cons.der HIV-2 infection in the inves.igation of patients.pres.nting with the AIDs.related illnes. but with negative HIV-1s.rology. The s.udy als. s.ows.the importance of inclus.on of multis.ot HIV-1 and 2 rapid tes.s.for differentiating HIV-1 from HIV-2 infections.in regions.where

One of the alternative s.s.ainable and green cons.ruction materials.to concrete is.timber. Timber is.of numerous.varieties. and this.acts.as.a barrier to the extent of its.us.ge, es.ecially in s.ructural application. Des.ite many res.arches.on wood’s.mechanical and phys.cal properties. only a few are geared toward the s.ructural application of wood. The pres.nt work inves.igated the mechanical properties.of five timber s.ecies.Gmelina arborea, Tectona grandis.(Teak), Terminalia s.perba (Afara), Ayin (Anogeis.us.leiocarpus., and Acacia (Robinia ps.udoacacia), to determine their s.itability for cons.ructing long-s.an roof trus.es. Thes. are available in the s.uth Wes.ern part of Nigeria. Their mechanical properties.bending s.rength, compres.ive s.rength, s.ear s.rength, tens.le s.rength, Modulus.of Elas.icity (MOE), Modulus.of Rupture (MOR), and dens.ty, were determined in the laboratory. The res.lts.obtained s.owed that all the timber types. except Terminalia s.perba (Afara), have higher values.of mechanical properties.than the values.that are obtainable for clas.es.of s.rength D30 to clas. D70 in the Britis. Code of Practice. It means.thes. s.ecies.are of higher quality than the s.ipulated s.rength clas.es.in the Britis. code. The res.lts.als. s.ow that the order of relevance of the s.ecies.for s.ructural des.gn (or work) is.Acacia (Robinia ps.udoacacia), Ayin (Anogeis.us.leiocarpus., Gmelina Arborea, and Tectona grandis.(Teak). Terminalia s.perba (Afara) is.not recommended for s.ructural works.

This.res.arch was.conducted to formulate a refractory lining recipe for lining dies.l fired rotary furnace from locally s.urced kaolin, us.ng locally s.urced potter’s.clay as.binder. s.x s.mples.(A-F) of kaolin clay mined locally from Apata II area, Ondo road, in Ile-Ife,Nigeria, were roas.ed at 1200oC held for 8 hours. mixed with different percentages.of raw kaolin and appropriately made into briquettes.us.ng potter’s.clay of good plas.icity as.binder. The s.mples.were tes.ed for various.refractory properties. The res.lt s.owed that s.mple mixes.A (100% chamotte), B (80% chamotte, 20% rawkaolin) and C (60% chamotte, 40% raw kaolin) are cons.dered to have good properties. However, the optimum material-mix for the refractory bricks.lining, with particular reference to the highes. thermal s.ock res.s.ance was.found to be 80% chamotte mixed with 20% raw kaolin.
