Prediction of melting Paths of Wollastonite-Containing Compositions

The article analyzed the main groups of thermal insulation(TIm) and slag-forming(SFm) mixtures produced by leading foreign companies: acidic ones based on the SiO2-Al2O3system, basic ones based on the Ca O-mg O-Al2O3system and medium basic ones based on the Ca O(mg O) system-Al2O3-SiO2. It is shown that achieving the necessary properties of the SFm and TIm requires strict observance of the mass content of the components of mixtures produced on the basis of synthetic materials in granular form with a given dispersion. Compliance with a given composition and dispersion is associated with the need to provide a given melting temperature(for intermediate ladles 1 250-1 450 °C, for molds 950-1 150 °C), neutrality to the cast metal, protection of the melt from secondary oxidation, minimization of heat loss from the melt mirror, absorption of non-metallic inclusions of various natures(Al2O3, Ca O, SiO2, TiO2, less often mg O-containing) and sizes; as well as a number of specific requirements: compatibility with the working layer of the lining of the bucket, maintaining the work of the stoppers, minimizing harmful gaseous emissions, etc. It is known that Al2O3, TixOy, and Ca O refractory inclusions in steel cause the majority of defects on the surface of a cold-rolled sheet, therefore, the aim of the work was to analyze the physicochemical regularities and melting paths of the wollastonite-containing compositions during the assimilation of nonmetallic inclusions by them. To analyze the melting paths of the wollastonite-containing compositions in the Ca O-Al2O3-SiO2system, a diagram of the primary crystallization field of anorthite and the adjacent boundary curves is shown, indicating the directions of temperature drop and designating invariant points. The presented scheme adequately reflects the topological regularities of the state diagram of the Ca O-Al2O3-SiO2system. modeling of Atmospheric Gravity Effects for High-Precision Observations

Temporal variations of atmospheric density distribution induce changes in the gravitational air mass attraction at a specific observation site. Additionally, the load of the atmospheric masses deforms the Earth’s crust and the sea surface. Variations in the local gravity acceleration and atmospheric pressure are known to be corrected with an admittance of about 3 nm/s2 per hPa as a standard factor, which is in accordance with the IAG Resolution No. 9, 1983. A more accurate admittance factor for a gravity station is varying with time and depends on the total global mass distribution within the atmosphere. The Institut für Erdmessung (IfE) performed absolute gravity observations in the Fennoscandian land uplift area nearly every year from 2003 to 2008. The objective is to ensure a reduction with 3 nm/s2 accuracy. Therefore, atmospheric gravity changes are modeled using globally distributed ECmWF data. The attraction effect from the local zone around the gravity station is calculated with ECmWF 3D weather data describing different pressure levels up to a height of 50 km. To model the regional and global attraction, and all deformation components the Green’s functions method and surface ECmWF 2D weather data are used. For the annually performed absolute gravimetry determinations, this approach improved the reductions by 8 nm/s2 (-19 nm/s2 to +4 nm/s2). The gravity modeling was verified using superconducting gravimeter data at station membach inBelgiumimproving the residuals by about 15%.

Protective effects of polar lipids and redox-active compounds from marine organisms at modeling of hyperlipidemia and diabetes

Cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus are leading causes of mortality in modern society. The search for a novel effective remedy represents an important task for modern medicine. A total mixture of phospho- and glycolipids from sea macrophytes Sargassum pallidum, Ulva fenestrata, Zostera marina was separated and the fatty acid composition was determined. The biological activity of the mixtures of polar lipids and natural redox-active compounds (echinochrome A from the flat sea urchin Scaphechinus mirabilis and a polyphenolic complex from the sea grass Zostera marina) was studied under conditions of impairments of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Doses and compositions of mixtures of pola lipids and redox-active compounds possessing high corrective activity were optimized in mice with the experimental model of hyperlipidemia and diabetes. Based on these results possible mechanisms of the effects of polar lipids containing various polyunsaturated fatty acids and the investigated redox-active compounds (echinochrome A, rosmarinic acid, luteolin and its sulphate conjugates) have been proposed. The developed compositions may be used for creation of new biologically active additives and remedies.

The nanocomposites based on cobalt oxide and nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (N-CNFs) with cobalt oxide contents of 10–90 wt% were examined as catalysts in the CO oxidation and supercapacity electrodes. Depending on Со3О4 content, such nanocomposites have different morphologies of cobalt oxide nanoparticles, distributions over the bulk, and ratios of Со3+/Co2+ cations. The 90%Со3О4-N-CNFs nanocomposite showed the best activity because of the increased concentration of defects in N-CNFs. The capacitance of electrodes containing 10%Со3О4-N-CNFs was 95 F/g, which is 1.7 times higher than electrodes made from N-CNFs.

Fungal infection dynamics in response to temperature in the lepidopteran insect Galleria mellonella

This study examines how the dynamics of fungus-insect interactions can be modulated by temperature. The wax moth, Galleria mellonella, is a well-studied and important model insect whose larvae in the wild develop optimally at around 34 ℃ in beehives. However, surprisingly little research on wax moths has been conducted at relevant temperatures. In this study, the entomopathogenic fungus metarhizium robertsii inflicted rapid and substantial mortality on wax moth larvae maintained at a constant temperature of 24 ℃, but at 34 ℃ a 10 fold higher dose was required to achieve an equivalent mortality. The cooler temperature favored fungal pathogenicity, with condial adhesion to the cuticle, germination and hemocoel invasion all significantly enhanced at 24 ℃, compared with 34 ℃. The wax moth larvae immune responses altered with the temperature, and with the infective dose of the fungus. Enzyme-based immune defenses （lysozyme and phenoloxidase） exhibited enhanced activity at the warmer temperature. A dramatic upregulation in the basal expression of galiomicin and gallerimycin was triggered by cooling, and this was augmented in the presence of the fungus. Profiling of the predominant insect epicuticular fatty acids revealed a 4-7 fold increase in palmetic, oleic and linoleic acids in larvae maintained at 24 ℃ compared with those at 34 ℃, but these failed to exert fungistatic effects on topically applied fungus. This study demonstrates the importance of choosing environmental conditions relevant to the habitat of the insect host when determining the dynamics and outcome of insect/fungus interactions, and has particular significance for the application of entomopathogens as biocontrol agents.

The issue of accelerated forestry plantation with high-quality wood using the best soils in terms of productivity,fertilizers,and intensive treatment has become quite relevant due to increased demand for forestry products and higher requirements for environmentally friendly use of forest *** paper presents the results of a study on the impact of various techniques for treating coniferous plantations,including thinning,fertilization,and herbicide processing,on wood quality key *** paper examined the wood density,correlation of early and late wood zones,and the cell wall thickness for 38-year-old pine trees grown on the sample plots of Siversky leskhoz(Leningrad region,Gatchinskiy district)at different treatment and density control *** has been established that the highest basis density of wood corresponds to the samples grown at the density variant of 1 t/ha and double herbicides treatment,and the lowest basis density value was recorded at the option of 4 t/ha with combined *** has been shown that the increase of width index for early wood is influenced by the lower density of 1 t/ha and one-time herbicide treatment,for late wood–by the lower density of 1 t/ha and repeated treatment with *** increase in average cell wall thickness for early and late wood is observed when the density increases up to 4 t/ha and double herbicides *** results obtained provide a valuable scientific contribution to general forestry knowledge and have practical value in plantation forestry.

Radionuclides and mercury in the salt lakes of the Crimea

^99Sr concentrations, resulting from the Chernobyl NPP accident, were determined in the salt lakes of the Crimea （Lakes Kiyatskoe, Kirleutskoe, Kizil-Yar, Bakalskoe and Donuzlav）, together with the redistribution between the components of the ecosystems. The content of mercury in the waters of the studied reservoirs was also established. Vertical distributions of natural radionuclide activities （^238U, ^232Th, ^226Ra, ^210pb, ^40K） and anthropogenic ^137Cs concentrations （as radiotracers） were determined in the bottom sediments of the Koyashskoe salt lake （located in the south-eastern Crimea） to evaluate the long- term dynamics and biogeochemical processes. Radiochemical and chemical analysis was undertaken and radiotracer and statistical methods were applied to the analytical data. The highest concentrations of ^99Sr in the water of Lake Kiyatskoe （350.5 and 98.0 Bq/m^3） and Lake Kirleutskoe （121.3 Bq/m^3） were due to the discharge of the Dnieper water from the North-Crimean Canal. The high content of mercury in Lake Kiyatskoe （363.2 ng/L） and in seawater near Lake Kizil-Yar （364 ng/L） exceeded the maximum permissible concentration （3.5 times the maximum）. Natural radionuclides provide the main contribution to the total radioactivity （artificial and natural combined） in the bottom sediments of Lake Koyashskoe. The significant concentration of ^210pb in the upper layer of bottom sediments of the lake indicates an active inflow of its parent radionuclide-gaseous ^222Rn from the lower layers of the bottom sediment. The average sedimentation rates in Lake Koyashskoe, determined using ^210pb and ^137Cs data, were 0.117 and 0.109 cm per year, respectively.

Sedimentation History of Neogene Lacustrine Sediments of Sueoka Bela Stena Based on Geochemical Parameters(Valjevo-mionica Basin,Serbia)

Sediments of the western part of the Valjevo-mionica basin （Serbia） were examined both geochemically and mineralogically to explain, on the basis of their sedimentologicai characteristics, the causes of changes in their qualitative and quantitative composition. A total of 62 samples obtained from the drillhole at depths up to 400 m was investigated. Using correlation of the obtained data, six geochemical zones were defined, two of which being specially distinguished by their mineralogical, geochemical and sedimentological characteristics. The first one, upper zone A, consists of banded marlstones interbedded with clay and oil shales and is characterized by presence of analcite and searlesite. These minerals and very high contents of Na20 indicate sedimentation in alkaline conditions with increased salinity in arid climate. That provided pronounced water stratification, as well as higher bioproductivity in the basin and sedimentary organic matter preservation. Therefore, the zone A sediments are characterized by high organic matter contents of the type which provides good potential for production of liquid hydrocarbons. Another specific zone, zone F, contains sediments with very high mgO, K2O and Li concentrations. Their geochemical correlation, as well as almost complete absence of illite in this zone, indicates the presence of interstratified clay mineral type illite-saponite （lithium-bearing mg-smectite）.
