Weaning is a challenging stage of pig *** undergo environmental,social and dietary changes leading to weaning stress *** order to compensate for the detrimental effects of weaning stress,antibiotics and natural extracts are used as feed additives,sometimes without fully understanding the interactions between them or even with low concentrations of mycotoxins that are frequently present in *** aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of fosfomycin(FOS),Cynara scolymus extract(CSE),deoxynivalenol(DON) and their combined administration on intestinal health of weaned *** experiment was designed as a 2×2×2 factorial arrangement with 3 factors(FOS,CSE and DON treatments),2 levels each(presence and absence) and 3 *** piglets(n=24)were randomly divided in groups to receive the different treatments,namely DON administered in diet(50 μg/kg bW),FOS administered into the drinking water(30 mg/kg bW),CSE administered in diet(15 mg/kg bW) and all their *** 15 d,the animals were euthanized and gastrointestinal tract samples were immediately taken to evaluate gastrointestinal pH,Enterobacteriaceae to lactic acid bacteria(E:L) ratio,volatile fatty acid(VFA) concentrations,disaccharidase(lactase,sucrase and maltase)activity,histology(intestinal absorptive area [IAA] and goblet cells count) and mucus ability to adhere pathogenic Escherichia *** our results,FOS and CSE treatments,individually or combined,produced a lower E:L ratio,an enhanced production of butyrate,increased disaccharidase activity(particularly maltase),and a greater IAA and goblet cells count along with an increase in pathogenic bacteria adherence to intestinal *** did not show interactions with the other factors and its administration produced decreases on VFA,disaccharidase activity and goblet cells *** conclusion,weaning piglets receiving diets containing FOS,CSE or both exhibited evident beneficial intestinal effects compared

Cancer patient care requires a multi-disciplinary approach and multiple medical and ethical *** care during a pandemic health crisis requires prioritising the use of resources for patients with a greater chance of survival,especially in developing *** coronavirus disease 2019 crisis has generated new challenges given that cancer patients are normally not prioritised for admission in critical care ***,the development of new cancer drugs and novel adjuvant/neoadjuvant protocols has dramatically improved the prognosis of cancer patients,resulting in a more complex decision-making when prioritising intensive care in pandemic *** this context,it is essential to establish an effective and transparent communication between the oncology team,critical care,and emergency units to make the best decisions,considering the principles of justice and ***,cancer treatment protocols must be adapted to prioritise according to oncologic response and *** technologies are powerful tools to optimise cancer care during pandemics,and we must adapt quickly to this new scenario of clinical care and *** this new challenging pandemic scenario,multi-disciplinary work and effective communication between clinics,technology,science,and ethics is the key to optimising clinical care of cancer patients.

Empowered Stakeholders: Female University Students’ Leadership During the COVID-19-Triggered On-campus Evictions in Canada and the United States

The study of disaster-specific leadership of female university students has been largely neglected,especially during on-campus emergency eviction and *** on the COVID-19-triggered,on-campus evictions across Canada and the United States,this cross-national partnership examined the out-of-province/state and international female university students’leadership during the entire eviction *** in-depth interviews,this study revealed the female university students’leadership behaviors during three stages:(1)pre-eviction:their self-preparedness formed an emotional foundation to support others;(2)peri-eviction:their attitude and leadership behavior enabled them to facilitate(psychologically and physically)their peers’eviction process;and(3)post-eviction:they continued to support their peers virtually and raised the general public’s awareness regarding the plight of vulnerable and marginalized *** article argues that the female university students’leadership that emerged during the eviction process became complementary to and even augmented the universities’official efforts and *** leadership represents empirical evidence that contributes to the existing literature on gender and leadership by demonstrating female youth as empowered stakeholders rather than as merely passive *** studies could develop detailed stratification of gender and age dimensions in order to portray a more comprehensive picture of the younger generation’s leadership in hazards and disaster research and practice.

Campanian Climatic Change:Isotopic Evidence from Far East,North America,North Atlantic and Western Europe

Paleoclimatic settings have been reconstructed for the Campanian using original oxygenisotopic analyses of well-preserved molluskan and foraminifera shells from Russian Far East, Hokkaido, USA, belgium and some DSDP holes （95, 98, 102, 390A, and 392A） in North Atlantic. Early Early Campanian climatic optimum has been recognized from data on high bottom shelf water paleotemperatures in middle latitudes of both the western circum-Pacific （to 24.2℃） and the eastern circum-Pacific （to 26.4℃） areas and high bottom shallow water paleotemperatures in high latitudes of the Koryak Upland （22.4-25.5℃）, which agrees with the data on the Campanian barykovskaya flora in high latitudes （Golovneva and Herman, 1998） and Jonker flora and its equivalents in middle latitudes. Judging from the data on comparatively high bottom shallow water paleotemperature values in high latitudes, South Alaska （19.4℃） and the Koryak Upland （22.4-25.5℃）, we also expect Latest Campauian temperature maximum, which has not been confirmed, however, for low and middle latitudes by neither of isotopic nor paleobotanic data now. Main dimatic tendency during the Campanian （with the exception of Latest Campanian） has been learned from isotopic composition of Campanian aragonitic ammonoid shells from the Hokkaido-South Sakhalin （Krilyon） marine basin. In contrary to Huber＇s et al. （2002） assumption, we expect warm greenhouse conditions during the most part of the Campanian.

Females choose gentle, but not healthy or macho males in Campbell dwarf hamsters （Phodopus campbelli Thomas 1905）

Androgen-dependent male sexual traits （STs） as well as immunocompetence are theoreticallyassumed to be key indicators of a male＇s quality for the mate-choosing female. We studied matechoice by sexually motivated （SM） females of Campbell＇s dwarf hamsters. Females chose between2 tethered male siblings that differed in expression of STs. Males were unrelated to the female andable to contact and copulate with her. In both males, we measured sex-related morphology ofbody mass, mid-ventral specific skin gland, ano-genital distance, and external testicular *** also estimated levels of blood testosterone and cortisol, specific T- and b-cell immune re-sponses to antigens, as well as aggressive and sexual dominance in sibling males through add-itional encounter experiments with another SM female （male sibs could freely compete for thefemale）. We found that SM females chose a partner among 2 male sibs and spent over 80% of theirtime on average with the preferred male compared with the non-preferred one. Her choice was notassociated with the first visit of the chosen male, with a higher expression of sex-related traits,higher levels of blood testosterone, or with aggressive dominance. The choice was not associatedwith the intensity of T-cell immune response to phitohemagglutinin （PHA）. Instead there was a ten-dency for a negative relationship with the expression of STs and b-cell response to the antigenchallenge. The only character that unambiguously influenced female choice was the non-aggressive male to female grooming during sexual contact. There was no difference in breedingsuccess between preferred and non-preferred males paired with virgin females.

When Information Does Not Translate into Knowledge. Ebola and Hemorrhagic Fevers Knowledge among Primary Care Physicians and Nurses

After the first secondarily-transmitted ebola case in Spain, a wave of divergent opinions flooded mass and sanitary media. Very few of these opinions, however, came from experts on epidemiology or hemorrhagic fevers. This observational study aimed to assess the specific knowledge of Primary Care physicians and nurses about ebola and hemorrhagic fevers by means of analyzing the results obtained from a 5-item self-reported questionnaire dealing on hemorrhagic fevers basic knowledge. Validity and reliability of questionnaire were confirmed by a pilot study. The participants were 138 family doctors and nurses from the 64 public Primary Care centers sited in the North Metropolitan Area of barcelona (1,400,000 inhab;Catalonia, Spain) taking part in training-the-trainers ebola workshops. Overall, there were 117 (84.8%) respondents out from 138 workshop participants;of them were physicians 61 (51.2%). The main age was 46.7 (8.8) years;stating previous specific knowledge on hemorrhagic fevers 39 (33.3%). On the whole, up to 92 (78.6%) of respondents shown a poor knowledge. Previous specific formation was significantly and independently associated with having proper knowledge (p bola case in Spain could probably be explained by the existence of a serious gap on hemorrhagic fevers knowledge. More accurate, scientific and formally-presented information should be provided to Primary Care physicians and nurses.

Expression of anti-Mullerian hormone receptor on the appendix testis in connection with urological disorders

The female internal sex organs develop from the paramesonephric （Mullerian） duct. In male embryos, the regression of the Mullerian duct is caused by the anti-Mullerian hormone （AMH）, which plays an important role in the process of testicular descent. The physiological remnant of the Mullerian duct in males is the appendix testis （AT）. In our previous study, we presented evidence for the decreased incidence of AT in cryptorchidism with intraoperative surgery. In this report, the expression of the anti-Mullerian hormone receptor type 2 （AMHR2）, the specific receptor of AMH, on the AT was investigated in connection with different urological disorders, such as hernia inguinalis, torsion of AT, cysta epididymis, varicocele, hydrocele testis and various forms of undescended testis. The correlation between the age of the patients and the expression of the AMHR2 was also examined. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction （RT-PCR） and immunohistochemistry were used to detect the receptor＇s mRNA and protein levels, respectively. We demonstrate that AMHR2 is expressed in the ATs. Additionally, the presence of this receptor was proven at the mRNA and protein levels. The expression pattern of the receptor correlated with neither the examined urological disorders nor the age of the patients; therefore, the function of the AT remains obscure.

Effect of erythromycin on image quality and transit time of capsule endoscopy: A two-center study

AIM: To compare the effect of oral erythromycin vs no preparation with prokinetics on the transit time and the image quality of capsule endoscopy (CE) in evaluating small bowel (Sb) pathology. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, blinded (to the type of preparation) review of 100 CE studies, 50 with no preparation with prokinetics from one medical center (Group A) and 50 from another center with administration of a single dose of 200 mg oral erythromycin 1 h prior to CE (Group b). Gastric, Sb and total transit times were calculated, the presence of bile in the duodenum was scored, as was cleanliness within the proximal, middle and distal intestine. RESULTS: The erythromycin group had a slightly shorter gastric transit time (21 min vs 28 min, with no statistical significance). Sb transit time was similar for both groups (all P > 0.05). Total transit time was almost identical in both groups. The rate of incomplete examination was 16% for Group A and 10% for Group b (P = 0.37). bile and cleanliness scores in different parts of the intestine were similar for the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Preparation for capsule endoscopy with erythromycin does not affect Sb or total transit time. It tends to reduce gastric transit time, but it does not increase the cecum-reaching rate. Erythromycin does not adversely affect image quality. We consider the routine use of oral erythromycin preparation as being unjustified, although it might be considered in patients with known prolonged gastric emptying time.

Pole to Equator Temperature Gradient for Coniacian Time,Late Cretaceous:Oxygen and Carbon Isotopic Data on the Koryak Upland and Hokkaido

The purpose of this study was to estimate the Coniacian latitudinal thermal gradient in the Northern Hemisphere. both hemipelagic （ammonoids） and benthic （brachiopods and bivalves） δ18O and δ^13C records were used. They originated from Coniacian shallow-water sequences across a wide range of paleolatitudes, from the Koryak upland （northern Kamchatka, Russian Far East） in the north, to Hokkaido （Japan） in the south. Among Coniacian ammonoids, both migrants from Hokkaido living in high latitudes （Kamchatka） and endemic forms dwelling in middle-low latitudes （Hokkaido） indicate seemingly close optimal growth temperatures. Nevertheless, certain differences in climatic conditions, prevailing during high-latitude coldest seasons, undoubtedly provoked growth cessation in some groups of ammonites. Our isotopic study suggests latitudinal temperature changes of only 0.12 ℃ per degree of latitude for the Northern Hemisphere in Coniacian times, while the average annual temperature in North Kamchatka seems about 3.3 ℃ lower than that in Hokkaido.
