paleoclimatic settings have been reconstructed for the Campanian using original oxy.enisotopic analy.es of well-preserved molluskan and foraminifera shells from Russian Far East, Hokkaido, USA, Belgium and some DSDp holes （95, 98, 102, 390A, and 392A） in North Atlantic. Early.Early.Campanian climatic optimum has been recognized from data on high bottom shelf water paleotemperatures in middle latitudes of both the western circum-pacific （to 24.2℃） and the eastern circum-pacific （to 26.4℃） areas and high bottom shallow water paleotemperatures in high latitudes of the Kory.k Upland （22.4-25.5℃）, which agrees with the data on the Campanian Bary.ovskay. flora in high latitudes （Golovneva and Herman, 1998） and Jonker flora and its equivalents in middle latitudes. Judging from the data on comparatively.high bottom shallow water paleotemperature values in high latitudes, South Alaska （19.4℃） and the Kory.k Upland （22.4-25.5℃）, we also expect Latest Campauian temperature maximum, which has not been confirmed, however, for low and middle latitudes by.neither of isotopic nor paleobotanic data now. Main dimatic tendency.during the Campanian （with the exception of Latest Campanian） has been learned from isotopic composition of Campanian aragonitic ammonoid shells from the Hokkaido-South Sakhalin （Krily.n） marine basin. In contrary.to Huber＇s et al. （2002） assumption, we expect warm greenhouse conditions during the most part of the Campanian.

Spatial distribution of people diagnosed with tuberculosis through routine and active case finding:a community.based study.in Kampala,Uganda

Background:Routine tuberculosis(TB)notifications are geographically.heterogeneous,but their utility.in predicting the location of undiagnosed TB cases is *** aimed to identify.small-scale geographic areas with high TB notification rates based on routinely.collected data and to evaluate whether these areas have a correspondingly.high rate of undiagnosed prevalent ***:We used routinely.collected data to identify.geographic areas with high TB notification rates and evaluated the extent to which these areas correlated with the location of undiagnosed cases during a subsequent community.wide active case finding intervention in Kampala,*** first enrolled all adults who lived within 35 contiguous zones and were diagnosed through routine care at four local TB Diagnosis and Treatment *** calculated average monthly.TB notification rates in each zone and defined geographic areas of“high risk”as zones that constituted the 20%of the population with highest notification *** compared the observed proportion of TB notifications among residents of these high-risk zones to the expected proportion,using simulated estimates based on population size and random variation *** then evaluated the extent to which these high-risk zones identified areas with high burdens of undiagnosed TB during a subsequent community.based active case finding campaign using a chi-square ***:We enrolled 45 adults diagnosed with TB through routine practices and who lived within the study.area(estimated population of 49527).Eighteen zones reported no TB cases in the 9-month period;among the remaining zones,monthly.TB notification rates ranged from 3.9 to 39.4 per 100000 *** five zones with the highest notification rates constituted 62%(95%CI:47–75%)of TB cases and 22%of the population–significantly.higher than would be expected if population size and random chance were the only.determinants of zone-to-zone variation(48%,95%simulation interval:40–59%).These f

predicting anatomical results of surgical treatment of idiopathic macular hole

AIM： To determine the parameters most informative in predicting the anatomical results of surgical treatment of idiopathic full-thickness macular hole （IMH）. METHODS： One hundred and sixty.two consecutive patients （170 ey.s） after primary.operation for IMH were enrolled. Outcomes were classified as anatomical success when both IMH closure and restoration of the outer retinal structure were achieved. ＂prospective＂ group included 108 patients （115 ey.s） followed with optical coherence tomography.（OCT） and microperimetry.for ly.after surgery. potential prognostic criteria, except microperimetry.data, were tested in ＂retrospective＂ group （54 patients, 55 ey.s）. prognostic value of each parameter was determined using receiver operating characteristic （ROC） analy.is. Combined predictive power of the best prognostic parameters was tested with the use of linear discriminant analy.is. RESULTS： IMH closure was achieved in 106 ey.s （92%） in the prospective group and 49 ey.s （89%） in the retrospective group. Despite anatomical closure, the outer retinal structure was not restored in two ey.s in the first group and in one ey. in the second group. preoperative central subfield retinal thickness demonstrated the best discriminatory.capability.between ey.s with anatomical success and failure： area under the ROC-curve （AUC） 0.938 （95% Ch 0.881-0.995）, sensitivity.64% at fixed specificity.95% （cut-off value 300um） in the prospective group; sensitivity.57% and specificity.90% in the retrospective group. Other continuous parameters except tractional hole index （AUC： 0.796, 95% Ch 0.591- 1.000） had significantly.lower AUCs （p〈0.05）. The best combination of the parameters, established by.discriminant analy.is in the prospective group, could not confirm its predictive value in the retrospective group. CONCLUSION： preoperative central subfield retinal thickness is a strong and probably.the best predictor of anatomical results of IMH surgical treatment.

目的生物-心理-社会衰弱与死亡风险增加和医疗卫生服务利用有关。本研究旨在评估老年人功能评估简表(Short Functional Geriatric Evaluation,SFGE)对老年人死亡率和住院率的预测效能。方法采用回顾性队列研究对参与意大利“老年人长寿!”项目的人群进行分析。共纳入8561名75岁以上的意大利社区居民,平均随访时间516.6 d。计算老年人死亡率、住院率、养老机构入住率和SFGE评估的衰弱程度并进行分析。SFGE评分中社会经济相关条目占40%。结果与健康老年人相比,衰弱前期、衰弱和非常衰弱老人死亡(RR分别为1.40、2.78和5.41)、住院(OR分别为1.31、1.67和2.08)和养老机构入住(OR分别为3.63、9.52和10.61)风险显著增加。在仅纳入社会经济条目的模型中得到类似结果。衰弱预测死亡率的受试者工作特征曲线下面积为0.70(95%CI 0.68~0.72),敏感性和特异性分别为83.2%和40.4%。结论SFGE评分通过对老年人衰弱程度进行分层来预测死亡、住院和养老机构入住风险。该评估工具简短、包含社会经济变量等特征使之可作为公众健康大样本筛查工具,将衰弱作为社区老年人照护的核心。

The purpose of this study.was to estimate the Coniacian latitudinal thermal gradient in the Northern Hemisphere. Both hemipelagic （ammonoids） and benthic （brachiopods and bivalves） δ18O and δ^13C records were used. They.originated from Coniacian shallow-water sequences across a wide range of paleolatitudes, from the Kory.k upland （northern Kamchatka, Russian Far East） in the north, to Hokkaido （Japan） in the south. Among Coniacian ammonoids, both migrants from Hokkaido living in high latitudes （Kamchatka） and endemic forms dwelling in middle-low latitudes （Hokkaido） indicate seemingly.close optimal growth temperatures. Nevertheless, certain differences in climatic conditions, prevailing during high-latitude coldest seasons, undoubtedly.provoked growth cessation in some groups of ammonites. Our isotopic study.suggests latitudinal temperature changes of only.0.12 ℃ per degree of latitude for the Northern Hemisphere in Coniacian times, while the average annual temperature in North Kamchatka seems about 3.3 ℃ lower than that in Hokkaido.

Oplopanax elatus(Nakai) Nakai, a member of the ancient angiosperm plant family.Araliaceae, is used for the treatment of different disorders in the medicine sy.tems of China, Russia, and Korea, and was designated in Russia as a classical adaptogen. Despite extensive studies of classical adaptogens, there are comparatively.few reports concerning the chemical composition and pharmacological effects of O. elatus in English. The plant is a potential source of saponins, flavonoids, anthraquinones, terpenes, and other active compounds. Experimental studies and clinical applications have indicated that O. elatus possesses a number of pharmacological activities, including adaptogenic, anti-convulsant, anti-diabetic, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory. anti-oxidant, blood pressure modulating, and reproductive function effects. In this review, the chemistry. safety. and therapeutic potential of O. elatus are summarized and highlighted to encourage the further development of this plant.

Silica inflammation modulates lipoperoxide and thi-obarbituric acid reactive substances levels in liver and glucose concentration in blood of alloxan diabetic rats

Inflammatory.granulomatous diseases are cha- racterized by.a high concentration of granu- lomas in tissue interstitium in which phagocy.ic cells that produce active oxy.en and nitrogen metabolites are accumulated. Because of their high reactivity. free radicals react with unsatu- rated fatty.acids that are components of mem- brane phospholipids, activate lipid peroxidation processes (Lpp), the products of which have a cy.otoxic effect. The role of free radicals in the pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications has been proved. The purpose of the present work was to investigate the activity.of lipid peroxidation processes in the liver of rats with silica-induced granulomatous inflammation, allo- xan diabetes and their combination. The expe- riment involved male albino rats divided into four main groups. The first group were rats with silica granulomatous inflammation (SL rats);the second group were alloxan diabetic rats (DB rats);and the third group were alloxan diabetic rats, in which silica granulomatous inflammation was induced 8 day. after the disease onset (DB_SL rats), the fourth group were rats that were injected saline phy.iological solution into the tail vein (control rats). Rats were withdrawn from the experiment within different time pe- riods after the induction of pathological pro- cesses. Lpp activity.in liver homogenates was determined by.the relative concentration of lipo- peroxides in the heptane-isopropanol sy.tem and the concentration of products of the reac- tion with 2-thiobarbituric acid-reactive substan- ces (TBARS). The severity.of carbohy.rate meta- bolism disorders was evaluated through the measurement of the blood level of glucose, daily.urine volume and the relative weight of the kindney.. We found that silica administration activated Lpp in the liver of SL rats;we ob- served the accumulation of primary.products on day.1 after administration and later that of TBA- RS followed by.normalization of their concen- tration by.day.21 of the e

The Shc adaptor protein, particularly.its p52 isoform, has been identified as a primary.signaling partner for the ty.osine(s)-phosphory.ated cy.oplasmic tails of activated β3 integrins. Inspired by.our recent structure of the Shc pTB domain in complex with a bi-phosphory.ated peptide derived from β3 cy.oplasmic tail, we have initiated the investigation of Shc interaction with phospholipids of the membrane. We are particularly.focused on ptdIns and their effects on Shc mediated integrin signaling in vitro. Here we present thermody.amic profiles and molecular details of the interactions between Shc, integrin, and ptdIns, all of which have been studied by.ITC and solution NMR methods. A model of p52 Shc interaction with phosphory.ated β3 integrin cy.oplasmic tail at the cy.osolic face of the plasma membrane is proposed based on these data.
