Physiological and biochemical characteristic of Miscanthus×giganteus grown in heavy metal-oil sludge co-contaminated soil

The effect of oil sludge and zinc,present in soil both separately and as a mixture on the physiological and biochemical parameters of Miscanthus×giganteus plant was examined in a pot *** opposite effect of pollutants on the accumulation of plant biomass was established:in comparison with uncontaminated control the oil sludge increased,and Zn reduced the root and shoot *** sludge had an inhibitory effect on the plant photosynthetic apparatus,which intensified in the presence of *** specific antioxidant response of M.×giganteus to the presence of both pollutants was a marked increase in the activity of superoxide dismutase(mostly owing to oil sludge)and glutathione-S-transferase(mostly owing to zinc)in the *** participation of glutathione-S-transferase in the detoxification of both the organic and the inorganic pollutants was *** inhibited the activity of laccase-like oxidase,whereas oil sludge promoted laccase and ascorbate oxi-dase *** finding suggests that these enzymes play a part in the oxidative detox-ification of the organic *** both pollutants used jointly,Zn accumulation in the roots increased 6-fold,leading to increase in the efficiency of soil clean-up from the *** turn,Zn did not significantly affect the soil clean-up from oil *** study shows for the first time the effect of co-contamination of soil with oil sludge and Zn on the phys-iological and biochemical characteristics of the bioenergetic plant M.×*** data obtained are important for understanding the mechanisms of phytoremediation with this plant.

Invasive micropapillary carcinoma:A distinct type of adenocarcinomas in the gastrointestinal tract

Invasive micropapillary carcinoma (IMPC) is a rare histological type of tumor, first described in invasive ductal breast cancer, than in malignancies in other organs such as lungs, urinary bladder, ovaries or salivary glands. Recent literature data shows that this histological lesion has also been found in cancers of the gastrointestinal system. The micropapillary components are clusters of neoplastic cells that closely adhere to each other and are located in distinct empty spaces. Moreover, clusters of neoplastic cells do not have a fibrous-vascular core. The IMPC cells show reverse polarity resulting in typical ‘’inside-out’’ structures that determines secretary properties, disturbs adhesion and conditions grade of malignancy in gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Invasive micropapillary carcinoma in this location is associated with metastases to local lymph nodes and lymphovascular invasion. IMPC can be a prognostic factor for patients with cancers of the stomach, pancreas and with colorectal cancer since it is related with disease-free and overall survival. The purpose of this review is to present the characterization of invasive micropapillary carcinoma in colon, rectum, stomach and others site of GI tract, and to determine the immunohistological indentification of IMPC in those localization.

Short- and medium-term reproducibility of gastric emptying of a solid meal determined by a low dose of ^(13)C-octanoic acid and nondispersive isotope-selective infrared spectrometry

AIM： To evaluate the reproducibility of a modified 13^C breath test-based measurement of solid phase gastric emptying （GE） within the frames of a simple-repeated measure study protocol. METHODS： Twelve healthy subjects （6 females and 6 males, mean age 24.9＋0.7 years） were recruited to undergo three identical GE examinations. In six subjects the first two examinations were performed 2 d apart, and the third session was carried out at a median interval of 19.5 d （range 18 - 20 d） from the second one. In another six subjects the first two measurements were taken 20 d apart （median, range： 17-23 d）, whereas the third session took place 2 d after the second one. Probes of expiratory air collected before and during six hours after intake of a solid meal （378 kcal） labelled with 75 μL （68 mg） 13^C-octanoic acid, were measured for 13^CO2 enrichment with the nondispersive isotopeselective infrared spectrometry NDIRS apparatus. RESULTS： Taking coefficients of variation for paired examinations into account, the short-term reproducibility of the GE measurement was slightly but not significantly better than the medium-term one： 7.7% and 11.2% for the lag phase （T-Lag）, 7.3% and 10.9% for the gastric half emptying time （T1/2）. The least differences in GE parameters detectable at P= 0.05 level in the 12 paired examinations were 9.6 and 15.6 min for T-Lag, 11.6 and 19.7 min for T1/2 by a two-day or two to three-week time gap, respectively CONCLUSION： The low-cost modification of the breath test involving a lower dose of 13^C-octanoic acid and NDIRS, renders good short- and medium-term reproducibility, as well as sensitivity of the measurement of gastric emptying of solids.

Over the past decade,the presence of mistletoe(Viscum album ***)in Scots pine stands has increased in many European *** the factors that influence the occurrence of mistletoe in stands is key to making appropriate forest management decisions to limit damage and prevent the spread of mistletoe in the ***,the main objective of this study was to determine the probability of mistletoe occurrence in Scots pine stands in relation to stand-related endogenous factors such as age,top height,and stand density,as well as topographic and edaphic *** used unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)imagery from 2,247 stands to detect mistletoe in Scots pine stands,while majority stand and site characteristics were calculated from airborne laser scanning(ALS)*** on stand age and site type from the State Forest database were also *** found that mistletoe infestation in Scots pine stands is influenced by stand and site *** documented that the densest,tallest,and oldest stands were more susceptible to mistletoe *** type and specific microsite conditions associated with topography were also important factors driving mistletoe *** addition,climatic water balance was a significant factor in increasing the probability of mistletoe occurrence,which is important in the context of predicted temperature increases associated with climate *** results are important for better understanding patterns of mistletoe infestation and ecosystem functioning under climate *** an era of climate change and technological development,the use of remote sensing methods to determine the risk of mistletoe infestation can be a very useful tool for managing forest ecosystems to maintain forest sustainability and prevent forest disturbance.

Impact of corneal parameters on intraocular pressure measurements in different tonometry methods

AIM: To evaluate the impact of central corneal thickness(CCT) and corneal curvature on intraocular pressure(IOP) measurements performed by three different tonometers. METHODS: IOP in 132 healthy eyes of 66 participants was measured using three different tonometry techniques: Goldmann applanation tonometer(GAT), Pascal dynamic contour tonometer(DCT), and ICare rebound tonometer(RT). CCT and corneal curvature were assessed. RESULTS: In healthy eyes, DCT presents significantly higher values of IOP than GAT(17.34±3.69 and 15.27±4.06 mm Hg, P<0.0001). RT measurements are significantly lower than GAT(13.56±4.33 mm Hg, P<0.0001). Compared with GAT, DCT presented on average 2.51 mm Hg higher values in eyes with CCT<600 μm and 0.99 mm Hg higher results in eyes with CCT≥600 μm. The RT results were lower on average by 1.61 and 1.95 mm Hg than those obtained by GAT, respectively. Positive correlations between CCT in eyes with CCT<600 μm were detected for all IOP measurement techniques, whereas a similar relationship was not observed in eyes with thicker corneas. A correlation between IOP values and keratometry in the group with CCT<600 μm was not detected with any of the tonometry methods. In thicker corneas, a positive correlation was found for GAT and mean keratometry values(R=0.369, P=0.005). CONCLUSION: The same method should always be chosen for routine IOP control, and measurements obtained by different methods cannot be compared. All analysed tonometry methods are dependent on CCT;thus, CCT should be taken into consideration for both diagnostics and monitoring.

Comparison of the prognostic value of frailty assessment tools in patients aged≥65 years hospitalized in a cardiac care unit with acute coronary syndrome

Aberrant expression of alternative isoforms of transcription factors in hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is one of the most prevalent malignancies worldwide and the second leading cause of death among all cancer types. Deregulation of the networks of tissue-specific transcription factors(TFs) observed in HCC leads to profound changes in the hepatic transcriptional program that facilitates tumor progression. In addition, recent reports suggest that substantial aberrations in the production of TF isoforms occur in HCC. In vitro experiments have identified distinct isoform-specific regulatory functions and related biological effects of liver-specific TFs that are implicated in carcinogenesis, which may be relevant for tumor progression and clinical outcome. This study reviews available data on the expression of isoforms of liver-specific and ubiquitous TFs in the liver and HCC and their effects, including HNF4α, C/EBPs, p73 and TCF7 L2, and indicates that assessment of the ratio of isoforms and targeting specific TF variants may be beneficial for the prognosis and treatment of HCC.

Electrochemical water splitting is a straightforward process that involves two distinct reactions:the oxygen evolution reaction(OER)which produces oxygen(O_(2))and the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)which generates hydrogen(H_(2)).However,in the whole process,the OER is a bottleneck as it requires more energy than a four-electron reaction involving critical raw materials(such as RuO_(2)or IrO_(2))as ***,here,we address the challenge of erratic kinetics/limited durability of OER in water electrolysis,In this paper,we demonstrate that the deposition of ultrasmall amounts of nickel(Ⅱ)nitrate in zeolitic imidazolate framework-67(ZIF-67)can be used as a general approach to enhance the electrocatalytic performance of the *** investigated the influence of Ni(NO_(3))·x6H_(2)O loading on ZIF-67(from 0.1 to 0.0001 M)and found that ZIF-67 enriched with only 0.001 M of Ni(NO_(3))2·x6H_(2)O(ZIF-670.001 Ni)exhibited massive promotion in *** ZIF-670.001 Ni showed a large specific surface area of 2577 m^(2)g^(-1),a low overpotential of 299 mV,a lower Tafel slope of 94.1 mA dec^(-1),and an outstanding overpotential retention of 99.8%(at 50 mA cm^(-2)).By conducting electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR)measurements,we also discovered that the 0.001 M of Ni(NO_(3))_(2)·x6H_(2)O loading in ZIF-67 introduces Ni^(^(2+))dimers,which contribute to the enhanced electroactivity of the modified *** phenomenon was further revealed during density-functional theory(DFT)calculations,which allowed us to identify different possible forms of Ni^(^(2+))dimers and modeling of active *** with in situ experiments,we provide mechanistic insight into the OER mechanism under alkaline conditions and found that it follows the lattice oxygen mechanism(LOM).Our study proposes a facile and efficient room-temperature route to boost the electrochemical performance of ZIF-67 in *** the first time,we demonstrate that modifying ZIF-67 with an ultrasmall amoun

Endoscopic submucosal dissection for the treatment of neoplastic lesions in the gastrointestinal tract

AIM: To investigate the indications, resection rate, and safety of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for neoplastic lesions in the gastrointestinal tract at a European referral center. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective analysis of the ESD procedures performed in our center for mucosal neoplastic and submucosal lesions of the gastrointestinal tract. The duration of the procedure, en bloc and complete (R0) resection rates, and complication rates were evaluated. Variables were reported as mean ± SD or simple proportions. Univariate analysis and comparisons of procedure times and resection rates were performed using Mann-Whitney U tests, or χ2 tests for dichotomous ***: Between 2007 and 2011, ESD was performed in a total of 103 patients (46.7% male, mean age 64.0 ± 12.7 years). The indications for the procedure were epithelial tumor (n = 54), submucosal tumor (n = 42), or other (n = 7). The total en bloc resection rate was 90.3% (93/103) and R0 resection rate 80.6% (83/103). The median speed of the procedure was 15.0 min/cm2 . The complete resection rate was lower for submucosal tumors arising from the muscle layer (68%, 15/22, P ients, including perforation in 5.8% (n = 6), pneumoperitoneum in 3.9% (n = 4), delayed bleeding in 1.9% (n = 2), and other in 2.9% (n = 3). Only one patient with delayed perforation required surgical treatment. During the mean follow-up of 26 ± 15.3 mo, among patients with R0 resection, recurrence occurred in one patient (1.2%).CONCLUSION: ESD is an effective and safe method for resection of
