Kinetics of spontaneous crystallization of potassium nitrate from its supersaturated.aqueous solutions has been stud.ed.simultaneously by electrical cond.ctance and.optical transmittance method.. It was found.that spontaneous crystallization of potassium nitrate was accompanied.by aggregation of crystals. Growth of salt crystals was in the kinetic mod. of the growth process, and.was d.scribed.by the equation of the first ord.r regard.ng supersaturation of solution. The mechanism of aggregation and.intergrowth of crystals d.ring bulk crystallization via formation of nucleus-brid.es between crystals found.earlier for several salts was confirmed. Specific surface energy of potassium nitrate was evaluated.on the basis of the above mechanism of aggregation and.intergrowth of crystals. The established.value of the specific surface energy was reasonable and.agreed.satisfactorily with the available literature d.ta. Examination of crystal d.posit after completion of crystallization allowed.d.tecting crystal agglomerates of freakish and.irregular forms, which may be consid.red.as the d.rect confirmation of the above mechanism of intergrowth of crystals. Kinetics of crystallization, aggregation and.size d.stribution of salt crystals after completion of crystallization have been satisfactory d.scribed.by the earlier proposed.mod.l of the crystallization process. An excellent agreement was established.between the experimental d.ta on potassium nitrate solubility in aqueous solutions found.in the present work and.those available in the literature.

Alkali control of high-grad. metamorphism and.granitization

We review petrologic observations of reaction textures from high-grad. rocks that suggest the passage of fluid. with variable alkali activities. d.velopment of these reaction textures is accompanied.by regular compositional variations in plagioclase, pyroxenes, biotite, amphibole and.garnet. The textures are interpreted.in terms of exchange and.net-transfer reactions controlled.by the K and.Na activities in the fluid.. On the regional scale, these reactions operate in granitized. charnockitized. syenitized.etc. shear zones within high-grad. complexes. Thermod.namic calculations in simple chemical systems show that changes in mineral assemblages, includ.ng the transition from the hyd.ous to the anhyd.ous ones, may occur at constant pressure and.temperature d.e only to variations in the H2O and.the alkali activities. A simple proced.re for estimating the activity of the two major alkali oxid.s, K2O and.Na2O, is imple- mented.in the TWQ software. Examples of calculations are presented.for well-d.cumented.d.hyd.ation zones from South Africa, southern Ind.a, and.Sri Lanka. The calculations have revealed.two end.member regimes of alkalis d.ring specific metamorphic processes： rock buffered. which is characteristic for the precursor rocks containing two feld.pars, and.fluid.buffered.for the precursor rocks without K-feld.par. The observed.reaction textures and.the results of thermod.namic mod.ling are compared.with the results of available experimental stud.es on the interaction of the alkali chlorid. and.carbonate-bearing fluid. with metamorphic rocks at mid.crustal cond.tions. The experiments show the complex effect of alkali activities in the fluid.phase on the mineral assemblages. Both thermod.namic calculations and.experiments closely reprod.ce paragenetic relations theoretically pred.cted.by d.S. Korzhinskii in the 1940s.

Lead.free ferroelectric ceramics,0.67Bi_(1-x)Eu_(x)FeO_(3)-0.33BaTiO_(3)(BF-BT-xEu,x=0-0.02),were prepared.via a solid.state reaction,The effect of Eu^(3+) d.ping on the microstructure,d.electric properties,ferroelectric properties,and.electric-field.ind.ced.strain was *** X-ray d.ffraction(XRd. results ind.cate the presence of a mixed.phase of tetragonal and.rhombohed.al at the morphotropic phase bound.ry(MPB).d.ping with an appropriate amount of Eu^(3+) red.ces the Fe^(3+) content and.d.creases the leakage current in the binary system.A converse piezoelectric coefficient(d.(33)*) of 392 pm/V is obtained.at BF-BT-0.003Eu und.r an electric field.of 60 kV/cm at room temperature,which has a Curie temperature(T_(C)) of 414℃,The unipolar strain and.d.(33)* of BF-BT-0.003Eu ceramics increase to 0.438%and.730 pm/V at 125℃ The field.ind.ced.strain response of the BF-BT-0.003Eu ceramics is greater than that of 0.67BF-0.33BT,mainly d.e to its optimal grain size,red.ction of leakage current,and.coexistence of ferroelectric-relaxation phases,BF-BT-0.003Eu ceramic is a lead.free cand.d.te for high-temperature actuator applications.

A new non-electrolytic aluminum extraction method

A new method.of primary aluminum extraction from alumina was proposed. The method.is based.on the new reaction AlI3＋（3/2）Zn=Al＋（3/2）ZnI2. In its turn, the exchange reaction AlCl3＋CaI2→AlI3＋CaCl2 is used.to get aluminum iod.d. from aluminum chlorid.—the prod.ct of alumina carbochlorination. These reactions were stud.ed.in laboratory experiments as well as ad.itional reactions, which were need.d.for the main chemicals recycling： Cl2, ZnI2→Zn, CaCl2→CaI2. XRd.and.SEM method. were used.to investigate the phases and.morphology of the reaction＇s solid.prod.cts. The global free energy minimization method.was used.for the chemical equation＇s calculations. It was shown that aluminum can be effectively extracted.from alumina without electrolysis, extreme high temperature and.expend.d.chemicals. The estimated.specific carbon consumption and.CO2 atmospheric pollution rate have to be halves of such values for the contemporary aluminum plant powered.by the coal power station.

Refractory multi-principal-element alloys(RMPEAs)exhibit high specific strength at elevated.temperatures(T).However,current RMPEAs lack a balance of room-temperature(RT)d.ctility,high-T strength,and.high-T creep *** d.nsity-functional theory method.,we scanned.composition space using four criteria:(1)formation energies for operational stability:-150d.via interstitial electron d.nsity with Young’s mod.li E>250 GPa;(3)inverse Pugh ratio for d.ctility:G/Bd.4)high melting points:T_(m)>2500°*** rapid.bulk alloy synthesis and.characterization,we valid.ted.theory and.d.wn-selected.promising alloy compositions and.d.scovered.Mo72.3W12.8Ta10.0Ti2.5Zr2.5 having well-balanced.RT and.high-T mechanical *** alloy has comparable high-T compressive strength to well-known MoNbTaW but is more d.ctile and.more creep *** is also superior to a commercial Mo-based.refractory alloy and.a nickel-based.superalloy(Haynes-282)with improved.high-T tensile strength and.creep resistance.
