AIM: Diabetes Mellitus is associated with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. The need for enhanced efficacy and safety, and cheaper and more readily available new drugs has increased the search for new antidiabetic drugs from plants. This study was conducted to investigate the antidiabetic activity of the hydroethanolic leaf extract of B. coccineus in rats. METHoDS: The effect of B. coccineus extract(100–800 mg·kg–1, p.o.) on blood glucose levels in normal and glucose loaded rats, and alloxan-induced diabetic rats was determined. After 10 days of treatment, blood samples were collected from rats for lipid and insulin profiling. Animals were thereafter sacrificed and the kidneys, heart, and liver were harvested for antioxidant indices assay. RESULTS: In normal rats, B. coccineus did not cause significant reduction in blood glucose. At the dose of 800 mg·kg–1, significant increase in blood glucose level was not observed 30 min. after glucose load. B. coccineus administered acutely did not generally produce significant reduction in blood glucose level in diabetic rats. Administered subacutely, the extract significantly reduced blood glucose level in diabetic rats from the 3rdday with peak effect observed at the dose of 800 mg·kg–1on the 10thday. The extract generally preserved in vivo antioxidant levels in the kidneys, heart, and liver, increased the level of high density lipoprotein and insulin, and reduced the level of triglycerides and low density lipoprotein compared to diabetic control. CoNCLUSIoN: The findings in this study suggest that the hydroethanolic leaf extract Byrsocarpus coccineus possesses antidiabetic activity possibly mediated through inhibition of intestinal glucose absorption, in vivo antioxidant activity, and enhancement of regeneration of beta cells of the pancreas and insulin secretion.

Exogenous application of chelators towards enhancing heavy metals extraction efficiency of bioenergy crop has received considerable attention in recent ***,little is known about optimal application rate,comparative evaluation of degradable versus non-degradable chelators and their impact on cadmium(Cd)speciation and uptake,physiological and biochemical activity of sweet sorghum grown under Cd *** chelators namely,Nitrilotriacetic acid(NTA),tetrasodium N,N-diacetate(TDA),Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid(EDTA),iminodisuccinic acid(IDA)and control(Ck)were applied and compared at rates of 2,5,and 10 mmol kg^(-1) towards augmenting phytoextraction efficiency of sweet sorghum for Cd remediation in a screen house *** showed that sweet sorghum augmented with TDA significantly(Pomass,enhanced Cd uptake and accumulation when compared to EDTA at application rate of 2-5 mmol kg*** influenced Cd speciation via increasing acid-soluble,reducible,oxidizable,and residual fractions of Cd,thus increasing Cd *** and TDA increased proline concentrations,antioxidant enzymes and net photosynthetic activity rate(Pn)comparably to EDTA in sweet sorghum,thus enhancing stress tolerance and stabilizing photosynthetic ***,exogenous application of degradable TDA at 2-5 mmol kg^(-1) could be recommended as replacement for non-degradable EDTA in a chelate assisted approach towards augmenting bioenergy crop for phytoremediation of Cd polluted soil.

Efficacy of Plant Based Insecticides in Control of Leaf Defoliators(Podagrica uniformis Jacoby and Nisotra sjostedti Jacoby(Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) of okra(Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench)

The insecticidal efficacy of aqueous extracts of R. communis L. and Z. officinales L. was tested in a field study for the control of two important leaf defoliators （Podagrica uniformis and Nisotra sjostedti of okra）. The extracts were applied at 10% （w/v） and sprayed every week for five consecutive weeks. R. communis significantly reduced （P〈0.05） abundance of the pests on the 2nd day after spraying and increased the yield of okra. Numbers of fruits and weight yields were significantly higher in plots treated with R. communis compared to plots treated with Z. officinales and the untreated control. R. communis had the same weight yield with karate （synthetic insecticides）. The results indicated that R. communis could be used to control Podagrica uniformis and Nisotra sjostedti of okra.

ocular surface evaluation in eyes with chronic glaucoma on long term topical antiglaucoma therapy

AIM： To evaluate ocular surface changes and its correlation with the central corneal subbasal nerve fibre layer in chronic glaucoma patients. METHoDS： A prospective comparative study of ocular surface evaluation was performed in 50 eyes of 25 patients using two or more antiglaucoma medications for at least 6too and 50 eyes of 25 normal subjects without any ocular problems as controls. The study parameters evaluated included visual acuity, intraocular pressure, ocular surface evaluation parameters [fluorescein break-up time （FTBUT）, Schirmer＇s I test, ocular surface staining scores and ocular surface disease index score （oSDI）], central corneal sensation （Cochet Bonnett aesthesiometer）, central subbasal nerve fiber layer density （SBNFLD） by confocal microscopy. RESULTS： The mean values in the glaucoma cases and control groups respectively were as follows： oSDI score （35.89±16.07/6.02±3.84; P=-0.001）, Schirmer＇s I test score （7.632.64 mm/12.86±1.93 mm; P=-0.001）, FTBUT （9.442.76s/11.8±1.88s; P=0.001）, corneal （5.7±2.33/ 1.1±0.58; P=0.001） and conjunctival staining score （5.061.94/0.84±0.46; P=0.001）, corneal sensitivity （4.68±0.44/5.07±0.37; P=0.076）, mean subbasal nerve fiber number （3.58±0.99/5.40±1.70; P=0.001）, SBNFL length （1101.44±287.56 pm/1963.70±562.56 pro; P=0.001） and density （6883.941798.03 pm/mm/12 273.153516.04 pm/mm2; P=o.o01）. Dry eye severity of level 2 and 3 was seen in 66% of glaucoma group. Corneal （/=0.86） and conjunctival staining （R2=0.71） and oSDI score （R=0.67） showed statistically significant negative correlation with central corneal SBNFLD while FTBUT （R==0.84）, corneal sensitivity （/=0.52） showed positive correlation to central corneal SBNFLD in the long term topical antiglaucoma medication group. CoNCLUSIoN： ocular surface changes and antiglaucoma therapy induced dry eye is found to be associated with decreased SBNFLD in eyes on long term topical antiglaucoma medications.

Effects of heavy metal(Pb) concentration on some growth parameters of plants grown in lead polluted soil under organic fertilizer amendment

This study investigated morphological variation and biomass accumulation that occurred in Sida acuta and Chromolaena odorata plants grown in lead polluted soil under organic fertilizer amendment. The study was carried out in the screen house at the Biological Gardens of the obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, osun State. The experiment was a factorial combination of one heavy metal （Pb） at five levels of concentration （0, 200, 400, 800 and 1,000 mg/kg） in a completely randomized design, and were replicated three times for each of the two plants and two levels （0 g/kg and 9.4 g/kg） of organic fertilizer （oBD-Plus）. Each pot was filled with 5 kg of air-dried and sieved soil and placed on a plastic tray for the collection of excess water. Two weeks after planting, seedlings of uniform height were transplanted from the nursery to experimental pots at the rate of one seedling per pot and grown for 10 weeks. The growth parameters of the plants were biomonitored for 7 weeks. After 10 weeks of treatment, the plants were harvested and dried to calculate the biomass accumulation. The two plant species performed better under fertilizer application than without it. For each of the plant species the growth parameters decreased as the levels of Pb concentration increased. Furthermore, the plants＇ biomass decreased significantly （p 〈0.05） as the levels of Pb concentration increased. The organic fertilizer helped to improve the plants＇ performance in lead-polluted soil.

The applications of information technology (IT) tools and techniqueshave, over the years, simplified complex problem solving procedures. But thepower of automation is inhibited by the technicality in manning advanced equipment. To this end, tools deliberately combating this inhibition and advancing technological growth are the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). UAVs are rapidlytaking over major industries such as logistics, security, and *** others, this is a very efficient way of carrying out missions unconventional to humans. An application area of this technology is the local film industrywhich is not producing quality movies primarily due to the lack of technicalknow-how in utilizing these systems. This study therefore aim to devise an autonomous object tracking UAV system that would eliminate the complex procedureinvolved in stabilizing an aerial camera (aerial bot) midair and promote the creation of quality aerial video shooting. The study adopted Unified Modeling Language (UML) tools in modeling the system’s functionality. The traditionalServer-Client model architecture was adopted. The openCV library employedproved highly efficient in aiding the tracking procedure. The system provided ausable web controller which provides easy interaction between the pilot and thedrone. Conclusively, investments in UAVs would enhance creation of quality graphic contents.

Comparison of Leptosphaeria biglobosa-induced and chemically induced systemic resistance to *** in Brassica napus

Brassica napus(***)seedlings pre-treated with ascospores of Leptosphaeria biglobosa or foliar sprays of either acibenzolar-S-methyl(ASM)or menadione sodium bisulphite(MSB)were chal- lenge inoculated with *** ascospores and assessed for phoma leaf spot development and tissue morphology and gene expression responses to *** of increase in phoma leaf spot area 8―21 d after challenge inoculation were significantly greater on water pre-treated plants than on plants pre-treated with ***,ASM or MSB on both pre-treated leaves(local effect)and younger leaves without pre-treatment(systemic effect).Ninety-six h after challenge inoculation,the invasive hyphae of *** were encircled by rings of necrotic mesophyll cells on leaves pre-treated with L. biglobosa,ASM or MSB but not those pre-treated with *** of transcript levels of genes commonly used as markers of the major defence signalling pathways(PDF1.2,PR-1,NPR1,APX, CHB4)0–96 h after *** challenge inoculation showed expression patterns indicating prefer- ential activation of the jasmonate/ethylene pathway and involved induction of NPR1 locally and sys- temically in leaves of plants pre-treated with *** ascospores.

Intestinal heme absorption in hemochromatosis gene knock-out mice

AIM To investigat the influence of hemochromatosis gene(Hfe) mutation on ^(59)Fe labelled duodenal heme absorption in *** Heme absorption was measured in Hfe wild type and Hfe^((-/-)) mice by the duodenal tied loop and by oral gavage methods. The m RNA expression of heme oxygenase(Ho-1), Abcg2 and Flvcr1 genes and levels were determined by quantitative polymerase chain *** Heme absorption was significantly increased in homozygous Hfe^((-/-)) mice despite significant hepatic and splenic iron overload. While duodenal Ho-1 mRNA was highly expressed in the wild type and Hfe^((-/-)) heme-treated group following 24 h heme administration, Flvcr1 a mRNA decreased. However, Abcg2 mRNA expression levels in duodenum remained unchanged. CoNCLUSIoN Heme absorption was enhanced in Hfe^((-/-)) mice from both duodenal tied-loop segments and by oral gavage methods. Ho-1 m RNA levels were enhanced in mice duodenum after 24 h of heme feeding and may account for enhanced heme absorption in Hfe^((-/-)) mice. Implications for dietary recommendations on heme intake by Hfe subjects to modulate iron loading are important clinical considerations.

Dynamical modelling of cardiac electrical activity using bidomain approach: The effects of variation of ionic model parameters

This work presents the dynamical modelling of cardiac electrical activity using bidomain approach. It focuses on the effects of variation of the ionic model parameters on cardiac wave propagation. Cardiac electrical activity is governed by partial differential equations coupled to a system of ordinary differential equations. Numerical simulation of these equations is computationally expensive due to their non-linearity and stiffness. Nevertheless, we adopted the bidomain model due to its ability to reflect the actual cardiac wave propagation. The derived bidomain equations coupled with FitzHugh-Nagumo’s ionic equations were time-discretized using explicit forward Euler method and space-discretized using 2-D network modelling to obtain linearized equations for transmembrane potential Vm, extracellular potential φe and gating variable w. We implemented the discretized model and performed simulation experiments to study the effects of variation of ionic model parameters on the propagation of electrical wave across the cardiac tissue. Time characteristic of transmembrane potential, Vm, in the normal cardiac tissue was obtained by setting the values of ionic model parameters to 0.2, 0.2, 0.7 and 0.8 for excitation rate constant ε1, recovery rate constant ε2, recovery decay constant γ and excitation decay constant β respectively. Changing the values of ε1, ε2 to 0.04 and 0.28 respectively, the obtained Vm showed a time dilation at 0.04 indicating cardiac arrhythmia but no significant change to Vm was observed at 0.28. Also, changing β to 0.3 and 1.1 and γ to 0.4 and 1.2 sequentially, there was no significant change to the time characteristic of Vm. The obtained results revealed that only decrease in ε1, ε2 impacted significantly on the cardiac wave propagation.
