Malaria was tho.ght to.be rare in neo.ates. Ho.ever, recent studies repo.t increasing prevalence in neo.ates. Clinical features o. neo.atal malaria have also.no. been adequately repo.ted. This study was undertaken to.assess the prevalence, clinical features and o.tco.e o. malaria in neo.ates admitted into.two.tertiary ho.pitals in Jo., Plateau State. All co.secutive neo.ates aged 0 - 28 days admitted into.the neo.atal units o. Jo. University Teaching Ho.pital and Bingham University Teaching Ho.pital, Jo. were recruited into.the study. Giemsa stained blo.d films o. the neo.ates were examined by trained micro.co.ists. Neo.ates with malaria had presenting clinical features reco.ded and treated with amo.iaquine (1st line) and quinine (2nd line). Clinical features and parasitaemia were mo.ito.ed fo. 14 days fo. o.tco.e. o. the 301 neo.ates enro.led, 16 had malaria parasitaemia giving a prevalence o. 5.3%. Co.genital malaria acco.nted fo. 87.5% o. cases o. neo.atal malaria. Plasmo.ium falciparum mo.o.infectio. was respo.sible fo. all the cases o. malaria. ITN use in pregnancy o.fered so.e pro.ectio. against neo.atal malaria (CI=0.2 - 0.7). The median parasite density was 255 (72, 385) parasites/μl. Fever was significantly present in 10 (66.7%) o. the cases (p=0.03). Fifteen o. the 16 neo.ates had clinical and parasito.o.ical cure o. treatment with amo.iaquine. o.e treatment failure had cure after retreatment with quinine. There was no.mo.tality in all 16 neo.ates treated fo. malaria. Malaria is no. rare in neo.ates o. admissio. in Jo.. Fever is the co.mo.est clinical feature o. neo.atal malaria. Amo.iaquine pro.ided effective treatment o. malaria in neo.ates in Jo..

BPAS in *** aimed to.describe pulmo.ary perfusio. in a large paediatric co.o.t o. rTo. and its impact o. right ventricular and o.tflo.-tract hemo.ynamics using 4D flo. ***:130 co.secutive patients(mean age at CMR 14.3±4.6 years)were retro.pectively reviewed.96 patients had transannular patch witho.t valve preservatio. while 34 patients had co.served annulus o. valved co.duit.A pulmo.ary blo.d flo. ratio.right pulmo.ary artery(RPA)/left pulmo.ary artery(LPA))between 0.75 and 1.56 was co.sidered ***:Asymmetric pulmo.ary perfusio. was present in 59/130 patients(45%),with 54/59(91%)having left lung hypo.erfusio.(blo.d flo. ratio.1.56).RPA/LPA perfusio. ratio.in the who.e co.o.t was independently asso.iated with the LPA Z-sco.e(−0.053,p=0.007),the RPA regurgitant fractio.(RF)(0.013,p=0.011)and previo.s LPA stenting(0.648,p=0.004).Decreasing LPA%perfusio.(and co.versely increasing RPA%perfusio.)was significantly asso.iated with higher MPA diameter Z-sco.e(−0.06,p=0.007).o. multivariate analysis,MPA Z-sco.e was independently asso.iated with pulmo.ary RF(0.48,po.umes(co.fficient 3.6,p=0.023).In patients with transannular patch repair,asymmetric pulmo.ary flo. was an independent predicto. o. right ventricular ejectio. fractio.(RVEF)(−3.66,p=0.04).Co.clusio.s:Pulmo.ary perfusio. asymmetry is frequent in rTo. and is asso.iated with abno.mal right ventricular and o.tflo.-tract hemo.ynamics,including MPA dilatatio. and decreased RVEF in patients after transannular patch.

This paper reviews the effectiveness o. vehicle activated signs. Vehicle activated signs are being repo.tedly used in recent years to.display dynamic info.matio. to.ro.d users o. an individual basis in o.der to.give a warning o. info.m abo.t a specific event. Vehicle activated signs are triggered individually by vehicles when a certain criteria is met. An example o. such criteria is to.trigger a speed limit sign when the driver exceeds a pre-set thresho.d speed. The preset thresho.d is usually set to.a co.stant value which is o.ten equal, o. relative, to.the speed limit o. a particular ro.d segment. This review examines in detail the basis fo. the co.figuratio. o. the existing sign types in previo.s studies and explo.es the relatio. between the co.figuratio. o. the sign and their impact o. driver behavio. and sign efficiency. Mo.t o. previo.s studies sho. that these signs have significant impact o. driver behavio., traffic safety and traffic efficincy. In mo.t cases the signs deplo.ed have yielded reductio.s in mean speeds, in speed variatio. and in lo.ger head-ways. Ho.ever mo.t experiments repo.ted within the area were perfo.med with the signs set to.a certain static co.figuratio. within applicable co.ditio.s. Since so.e o. the afo.ementio.ed facto.s are dynamic in nature, it is felt that the co.figuratio.s o. these signs were thus no. carefully co.sidered by previo.s researchers and there is no.clear statement in the previo.s studies describing the relatio.ship between the trigger value and its co.sequences under different co.ditio.s. Bearing in mind that different designs o. vehicle activated signs can give a different impact under certain co.ditio.s o. ro.d, traffic and weather co.ditio.s the current wo.k suggests that variable speed thresho.ds sho.ld be co.sidered instead.

The accurate measurement o. a vehicle’s velo.ity is an essential feature in adaptive vehicle activated sign systems. Since the velo.ities o. the vehicles are acquired fro. a co.tinuo.s wave Do.pler radar, the data co.lectio. beco.es challenging. Data accuracy is sensitive to.the calibratio. o. the radar o. the ro.d. Ho.ever, clear metho.o.o.ies fo. in-field calibratio. have no. been carefully established. The signs are o.ten installed by subjective judgment which results in measurement erro.s. This paper develo.s a calibratio. metho. based o. mining the data co.lected and matching individual vehicles travelling between two.radars. The data was cleaned and prepared in two.ways: cleaning and reco.structing. The results sho.ed that the pro.o.ed co.rectio. facto. derived fro. the cleaned data co.respo.ded well with the experimental facto. do.e o. site. In additio., this pro.o.ed facto. sho.ed superio. perfo.mance to.the o.e derived fro. the reco.structed data.

Backgro.nd: Insulin resistance is linked to.dyslipidemia, characterized by a decrease in high density lipo.pro.eins and an increase in lo. density lipo.ro.eins. Thiazo.idinedio.es (TZDs) are insulin-sensitizing agents used to.impro.e glycemic co.tro. in patients with type 2 diabetes. Recently, the safety o. certain TZD regimens has been questio.ed because o. asso.iated adverse effects o. the plasma lipid pro.ile. We examined the effect o. a TZD, Ciglitazo.e, o. apo.ipo.ro.ein synthesis and secretio. in human liver HepG2 cells. Metho.s and Results: The effect o. Ciglitazo.e treatment o. apo.ipo.ro.ein synthesis was addressed at the level o. transcriptio., translatio. and secretio.. RT-PCR sho.ed that Ciglitazo.e increased the transcriptio. o. apo. and apo.I but reduced the levels o. apo.I and apo. mRNA. Western blo. analysis sho.ed an increase in apo.I and apo. secreted in the cell culture media, whereas the amo.nts o. apo.100 and apo.I were reduced. To.co.firm that Ciglitazo.e regulates apo.ipo.ro.ein translatio., its effect o. de no.o.pro.ein synthesis was evaluated by metabo.ic labeling with [35S]-methio.ine/cysteine, and a similar pattern o. regulatio. was o.served. The change in apo.ipo.ro.ein levels was no. seco.dary to.cho.estero. bio.ynthesis o. clearance, since Ciglita-zo.e did no. regulate the transcriptio. o. HMGCo. reductase, o. the LDL recepto.. Ho.ever, mRNA levels fo. bo.h PPAR-γ and LXRα were induced, suggesting a ro.e fo. either o. bo.h recepto.s in mo.ulating the hepatic apo.ipo.ro.ein pro.ile. The invo.vement o. these nuclear recepto. transcriptio. facto.s was co.firmed since direct activatio. o. these recepto.s by endo.eno.s PPAR-γ ligand, 15d-pro.taglandin J2, o.
