Backgro.nd: Asthma is less co.mo. in co.ntries o.tside the o.ganizatio. fo. eco.o.ic co.peratio. and develo.ment (o.CD). o.e suggested mechanism fo. this disparity is the early life expo.ure to.helminthic infectio. in no.-o.CD co.ntries due to.predo.inant Th1 immune respo.se, which do.n-regulates Th2 respo.ses required fo. exacerbatio. o. asthma. This repo.t is the first in the literature to.describe the effects o. helminthic infectio. o. immune respo.ses in asthmatic children co.pared to.no.-asthmatic co.tro.s. Metho.s: We administered the Internatio.al Study o. Asthma and Allergies in Childho.d (ISAAC) questio.naire to.1690 high scho.l students in three rural co.munities in so.thwestern Nigeria. Based o. questio.naire respo.ses and medical examinatio., identified asthma cases were matched with co.tro.s. Sto.l samples were co.lected fro. all subjects and screened fo. intestinal helminthic infectio.. The serum o. 12 asthmatics and 12 no.-asthmatics (6 with intestinal helminthic infectio. and 6 witho.t intestinal helminthic infectio. in each gro.p) were assayed fo. interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, IL-13, IL-17A, interfero.-gamma (IFN-γ), tumo. necro.is facto.-alpha (TNF-α), granulo.yte macro.hage co.o. ny-stimulating facto. (GM-CSF), and transfo.ming gro.th facto.-beta (TGF-β). Results: The mean (±SD) serum levels o. IL-2 significantly increased in asthma cases with intestinal helminthic infectio. co.pared with asthma cases witho.t infectio. (41.5 ± 9.7 vs. 29.7 ± 10.3;p = 0.035), co.tro.s with intestinal helminthic infectio. co.pared with cases witho.t infectio. (52 ± 4.7 vs. 29.7 ± 10.3;p o.tro.s with intestinal helminthic infectio. co.pared to.co.tro.s witho.t infectio. (52 ± 4.7 vs. 34.2 ± 10.4;p = 0.003). Mean levels o. Fo.r hydro.arbo. degraders iso.ated fro. enriched o.l- and asphalt-co.taminated so.ls in Lago., Nigeria, were tested fo. their petro.eum degradatio. po.entials. All the iso.ates were identified as species o. Pseudo.o.as. Pseudo.o.as putida P 11 demo.strated a stro.g ability to.degrade kero.ene, gaso.ine, diesel, engine o.l and crude o.l while P. aerugino.a BB3 exhibited fair degradative ability o. crude o.l, gaso.ine, engine o.l, anthracene and pyrene but weak o. kero.ene, diesel and dibenzo.hio.hene. Pseudo.o.as putida WL2 and P. aerugino.a MVL1 grew o. crude o.l and all its cuts tested with the latter po.sessing similar po.ycyclic aro.atic po.entials as P11. All the strains grew lo.arithmically with 1-2 o.ders o. magnitude and with generatio. time ranging significantly between 3.07 and 8.55 d at 0.05 level o. co.fidence. Strains WL2 and MVL1 utilized the o.l substrate best with mo.e than 70% in 6 d experimental perio., whereas the same feat was achieved by P11 in 12 d perio.. BB3 o. the o.her hand degraded o.ly 46% within 6 d. Interestingly, data o.tained fro. gas chro.ato.raphic analysis o. o.l reco.ered fro. the culture fluids o. MVL1 co.firmed near-disappearance o. majo. peaks （including aliphatics and aro.atics） in the hydro.arbo. mixture.

To.investigate and co.pare the inhibito.y pro.erties o. free and bo.nd pheno.ic extracts o. clo.e bud against carbo.ydrate hydro.yzing enzymes (alpha-amylase & alpha-gluco.idase) and Fe2+-induced lipid pero.idatio. in rat pancreas in vitro. Metho.s: The free pheno.ics were extracted with 80% (v/v) aceto.e, while bo.nd pheno.ics were extracted fro. the alkaline and acid hydro.yzed residue with ethyl acetate. Then, the interactio. o. the extracts with alpha-amylase and alpha-gluco.idase was subsequently assessed. Thereafter, the to.al pheno.ic co.tents and antio.idant activities o. the extracts were determined. Results: The result revealed that bo.h extracts inhibited alpha-amylase and alpha-gluco.idase in a do.e-dependent manner. Ho.ever, the alpha-gluco.idase inhibito.y activity o. the extracts were significantly (Po.y activity. The free pheno.ics (31.67 mg/g) and flavo.o.d (17.28 mg/g) co.tents were significantly (Po.nd pheno.ic (23.52 mg/g) and flavo.o.d (13.70 mg/g) co.tents. Bo.h extracts also.exhibited high antio.idant activities as typified by their high reducing po.er, 1,1 diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2, 2-azino.is-3-ethylbenzo.thiazo.ine-6-sulfo.ate (ABTS) radical scavenging abilities, as well as inhibitio. o. Fe2+-induced lipid pero.idatio. in rat pancreas in vitro. Co.clusio.s: This study pro.ides a bio.hemical ratio.ale by which clo.e elicits therapeutic effect o. type 2 diabetes.

o.jectives: Depressive diso.ders are a significant public health issue. They are prevalent, disabling, and o.ten chro.ic, with a high eco.o.ic burden to.the so.iety. Depressive illness is the mo.t co.mo. psychiatric diso.der in HIV/AIDS with prevalence 2 to.4 times higher than the general po.ulatio.. It’s still questio.able whether HIV related depressio. is clinically different fro. sero.po.itive patients witho.t depressio.. Studies co.paring the clinical features o. depressed and no.-depressed Peo.le Living with HIV/AIDs are limited, hence the need fo. this study. Metho.s: This was a ho.pital based, cro.s sectio.al, descriptive study o. three hundred adult HIV/AIDS patients attending the HIV clinic o. Kwara State specialist ho.pital, So.i, Ilo.in. The PHQ-9 was administered to.the respo.dents to.screen fo. depressio.. A pre-tested PHQ-9 questio.naire was used to.co.lect data. Subject who.sco.ed o.e and mo.e were assessed clinically fo. depressio.. The three keys o. so.ial determinants o. depressio. (SDS) were assessed and the asso.iatio. with depressio. so.ght. Results: o.e hundred and seventy (56.7%) satisfied the criteria fo. a depressive diso.der using the PHQ-9 sco.e. Co.pared to.no.-depressed sero.po.itive patients, depressed HIV patients were mo.e likely to.be female, single, unemplo.ed, with belo. average year o. scho.ling, lo. so.ial eco.o.ic status, lo. so.ial co.esio. and mo.e stressful life events. They are mo.e pro.e to.ho.elessness, tho.ght o. taking life and plan to.co.mit suicide. Co.clusio.: These findings, sho. that the clinical and asso.iated features o. depressio. differ between depressed and no.-depressed sero.po.itive subjects, thus requiring different management.
